चकार कुपिता दुर्गा विशिरस्कौ महासुरौ
Enraged, Durgā made the two great asuras headless.
कृत्वा जगाम कौशिक्याः सकाशं मार्यया सह
Having done this, she went to Kauśikī, together with Māryā.
ग्रथितो दैत्यशीर्षाभ्यां नागराजेन वेष्टितः
Bound with the heads of the demons, entwined by the king of serpents,
बबन्ध प्राह चैवैनां कृतं कर्म सुदारुणम्
She tied her up and said to her, 'A most terrible deed has been done.'
तस्माल्लोके तव ख्यातिश्चामुण्डेति भविष्यति
Therefore, in the world, your fame will be as Cāmuṇḍā.
दिग्वाससं चाभ्यवदत् प्रतीता निषूदय खारिबलान्यमूनि
She, clad only in the directions, was addressed: 'Go forth and destroy those armies of mules.'
निषूदयन्ती रिपुसैन्यमुग्रं चचार चान्यानसुरांश्चखाद
Striking down the fierce enemy army, she roamed about and devoured other asuras.
निपात्यमाना दनुपुङ्गवास्ते ककुद्मिनं शुम्भमुपाश्रयन्त
As the foremost of the Dānavas were being slain, they took refuge with Śumbha, the horned one.
अक्षौहिणीनां त्रिंशद्भिः कोटिभिः परिवारितम्
Surrounded by thirty crores of divisions of troops,
मुमोच सिंहनादं वै ताभ्यां सह महेश्वरी
The great goddess, together with them, let out a lion's roar.
हंसयुक्तविमानस्था साक्षसूत्रकमण्डलुः
Seated in an aerial chariot drawn by swans, she held a rosary and a water-pot.
महाहिवलया रौद्रा जाता कुण्डलिनी क्षणात्
A fierce one, encircled by great serpents, arose instantly as Kuṇḍalinī.
समुद्भूता च देवर्षे मयूरवरवाहना
And from the sage of the gods appeared one riding the splendid peacock.
शार्ङ्गबाणधरा जाता वैष्णवी रूपशालिनी
Bearing the bow Śārṅga and arrows, she was born, resplendent in Vaiṣṇavī form.
वाराही पृष्ठतो जाता शेषनागोपरि श्थिता
Vārāhī arose behind, standing upon the serpent king Śeṣa.
जाता गजेन्द्रपष्ठस्था माहेन्द्री स्तनमण्डलात्
From the circle of her breast appeared Māhendrī, mounted upon the lord of elephants.
नखिनी हृदयाज्जाता नारसिंही सुदारुणा
From her heart arose Nakhinī, the terribly fierce Nārasiṃhī.
तन्निनादं महच्छ्रुत्वा त्रैलोक्यप्रतिपूरकम्
Hearing that great roar, which filled the three worlds,
अभ्येत्य वन्द्य चैवैनां प्राह वाक्यं तदाम्बिकं
They approached and, having paid homage to her, spoke these words to the goddess Ambikā.
तद्वाक्यसमकालं च देव्या देहोद्भवा शिवा
At that very moment, from the goddess's body, Śivā was born.
ब्रूहि शुम्भं निशुम्भं च यदि जीवितुमिच्छथ
"Speak to Śumbha and Niśumbha, if you wish to live.
वासवो लभतां स्वर्गं देवाः सन्तु गतव्यथा
Let Indra regain heaven, and let the gods be free from distress.
नोचेद् बलावलेपेन भवन्तो योद्धुमिच्छथ
Otherwise, if you are proud of your strength, you may choose to fight.
यतस्तु सा शिवं दौत्ये न्ययोजयत् नारद
Therefore, Nārada, she sent Śiva as her messenger.
हुङ्कृत्वाभ्यद्रवन् सर्वे यत्र कात्यायनी स्थिता
With a roar, they all rushed to where Kātyāyanī stood.
प्रासैः सुनीक्ष्णैः परिघैश्च विस्तृतैर्ववर्षतुदैत्यवरौ सुरेश्वरीम्
The two great demons showered the queen of the gods with sharp spears and massive clubs.
जघान चान्यात् रणचण्डविक्रमा महासुरान् बाणशतैर्महेश्वरी
And Maheśvarī, with fierce valor in battle, struck down other great demons with hundreds of arrows.
महाजलक्षेपहतप्रभावान् ब्राह्मी तथान्यानसुरांश्चकार
Brāhmī, by hurling great torrents of water, deprived other demons of their power.
शक्त्या कुमारी कुलिशेन चैन्द्री तुण्डेन चक्रेण वराहरूपिणी
With her power, Kumari struck with the thunderbolt; Indrani with her beak; Varaha-formed with the discus.
रुद्रस्त्रिशूलेन तथैव चान्यान् विनायकश्चापि परश्वधेन
Rudra struck with his trident, and others likewise; Vinayaka too attacked with his axe.
