गणेशो ऽपि वरास्त्रैस्तान् प्रचिच्छेद बिभेद च
Ganesha too cut them down and struck them with mighty weapons.
वीरभद्रेण देवाद्या अवहारमर्कुत
By Vīrabhadra, the gods and others were driven into confusion.
जुह्वाना ऋषयो यत्र हवींषि प्रवितन्वते
There, the sages performing the sacrifice were offering oblations.
भीता होत्रं परित्यज्य जग्मुः शरणमच्युतम्
Frightened, they abandoned the sacrificial fire and sought refuge in the imperishable one.
न भेतव्यमितीत्युक्त्वा समुत्तस्थौ वरायुधः
Saying, 'Do not fear,' the wielder of the great weapon rose up.
मुमोच वीरभद्राय कायावरणदारणान्
He released at Vīrabhadra weapons that tear through bodily armor.
निपेतुर्भुवि भग्नाशा नास्तिकादिव याचकाः
Broken, they fell to the ground like beggars who have lost hope.
दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्वीरभद्रं प्रच्छादयितुमुद्यतः
He prepared to cover Vīrabhadra with divine weapons.
वारयामास शूलेन गदया मार्गणैस्तथा
He blocked them with his trident, his mace, and with arrows as well.
त्रिशुलेन समाहत्य पातयामास भूतले
Striking with his trident, he brought them down to the earth.
लाङ्गलं च गणेशो ऽपि गदया प्रत्यवारयत्
Ganesha too blocked the plough with his mace.
वीरभद्राय चिक्षेप चक्रं क्रोधात् खगध्वजः
Khagadhvaja, enraged, hurled his discus at Virabhadra.
शूलं परित्यज्य जगार चक्रं यथा मधुं मीनवपुः सुरेन्द्रः
Abandoning his trident, the lord of the gods, fish-bodied, rushed at the discus as if it were Madhu.
मुरारिरभ्येत्य गणाधिपेन्द्रमुत्क्षिप्य वेगाद् भुवि निष्पिपपेष
Murari approached the lord of the hosts, seized him, and forcefully dashed him to the ground.
सहितं रुधिरोद्गारैर्मुकाच्चक्रं विनिगतम्
With blood pouring from his mouth, the discus was stopped.
समादाय हृषीकेशो वीरभद्रो मुमोच ह
Hrishikesha took up the discus and hurled it at Virabhadra.
गत्वा निवेदयामास वासुदेवात्पराजयम्
He went and reported the defeat to Vasudeva.
निश्वसन्तं यथा नागं क्रोधं चक्रे तदाव्ययः
The imperishable one grew angry then, like a serpent hissing.
पूर्वोद्दिष्टे तदा स्थाने सायुधस्तु निवेशितः
Then, at the previously designated place, he was stationed, armed.
विवेश क्रोधताम्राक्षो यज्ञवाटं त्रिशूलभृत्
The trident-bearer, his eyes reddened with rage, entered the sacrificial enclosure.
दक्षस्य यज्ञं विशति क्षयङ्करे जातो ऋषीणां प्रवरो हि साध्वसः
He who brings destruction entered Daksha’s sacrifice, and the foremost of the seers was struck with fear.
तस्मात् स्थानादपाक्रम्य कुब्जाम्रे ऽन्तर्हितः स्थितः
Withdrawing from that place, he remained hidden within the crooked mango tree.
सा तु जाता सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा सीता नाम सरस्वती
She became the best of rivers, named Sita Sarasvati.
कान्दिशीका लयं जग्मुः समभ्येत्यैव शङ्करम्
The Kandishikas, approaching Shankara, attained dissolution.
समासाद्य पुरोडाशं भक्ष्याश्च महामुने
Having obtained the sacrificial cake and other foods, O great sage,
उत्पत्यरुह्य गगनं स्वमधिष्ठानमास्थितः
He sprang up, ascended the sky, and took his own abode.
पुष्पाञ्जलिपुटा भूत्वा प्रणताः संस्थिता मुने
With hands joined in offering flowers, they stood bowed, O sage.
शक्रादीनां सुरेशानां कृपणं विललाप ह
She lamented pitiably for Indra and the other lords of the gods.
तलप्रहारैरमरा बहवो विनिपातिताः
Many of the immortals were struck down by blows of the palm.
दृष्ट्यग्निना तथैवान्ये देवाद्याः प्रलयीकृताः
Others, including gods and the like, were destroyed by the fire of his gaze.
