तस्यां गतायां शैलेयी मलाच्चक्रे गजाननम्
When she departed, the daughter of the mountain fashioned the filth into an elephant-faced one.
कृत्वोत्ससर्ज भूम्यां च स्थिता भद्रासने पुनः
Having made him, she placed him on the earth and again sat upon her auspicious seat.
ईषद्धासामुमा दृष्ट्वा मालिनीं प्राह नारद
Seeing Umā with a slight smile, adorned with garlands, Nārada spoke.
साथोवाच हसाम्येवं भवत्यास्तनयः किल
He said, 'I am laughing because, it is said, you will have a son.'
तच्छुत्वा मम हासो ऽयं संजातो ऽद्य कृशोदरि
Hearing this, O slender-waisted one, this laughter of mine has arisen today.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो देवी सस्नौ तत्र विधानतः
Hearing these words, the goddess bathed there according to the prescribed rite.
ततः शंभुः समागत्य तस्मिन् भद्रासने त्वपि
Then Śambhu arrived and also sat upon that auspicious seat.
उमास्वेदं भवस्वेदं जलभूतिसमन्वितम्
Umā's sweat and Bhava's sweat, together with the water element—
अपत्यं हि विदित्वा च प्रीतिमान् भुवनेश्वरः
Knowing that it was for offspring, the Lord of the world was pleased.
रुद्रः स्नात्वर्च्य देवादीन् वाग्भिरद्भिः पितृनपि
Rudra, having bathed, worshipped the gods and also the ancestors with words and with water.
समेत्य देवीं विहसन् शङ्करः शूलधृग् वः
Śaṅkara, the trident-bearer, approached the goddess, smiling.
इत्युक्ता पर्वतसुता समेत्यापस्यदद्भुतम्
Thus addressed, the daughter of the mountain approached and saw a wondrous thing.
ततः प्रीति गिरिसुता तं पुत्रं परिषष्वजे
Then, delighted, the daughter of the mountain embraced that son.
नायकेन विना देवि तव भूतो ऽपि पुत्रकः
O goddess, even though he is your son, he exists without a leader.
एष विघ्नसहस्राणि सुरादीनां करिष्यति
He will cause thousands of obstacles for the gods and others.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा देव्यास्तु दत्तवांस्तनयाय हि
Having thus spoken, he gave him to the goddess as her son.
तथा मातृगणा घोरा भूता विघ्नकराश्च ये
Likewise, the fierce hosts of Mothers and those who cause obstacles—
देवी च स्वसुतं दृष्ट्वा परां मुदमवाप च
And the goddess, seeing her own son, experienced supreme joy.
या जघान महादैत्यै पुरा शुम्भनिशुम्भकौ
She who formerly slew the great demons Śumbha and Niśumbha—
स्वर्ग्यं यशस्यं च तथाघहारि आख्यनमूर्जस्करमद्रिपुत्र्याः
The story of the mountain's daughter brings heaven, fame, and destroys sin; it is full of power.
तस्याः पुत्रत्रयं चासीत् सहस्राक्षाद् बलाधिकम्
She had three sons, each surpassing even the thousand-eyed one in strength.
तृतीयो नमुचिर्नाम महाबलसमन्वितः
The third was named Namuci, endowed with immense power.
तं हन्तुमिच्छति हरिः प्रगृह्य कुलिशं करे
Hari, seizing the thunderbolt in his hand, wished to slay him.
प्रविवेश रथं भानोस्ततो नाशकदच्युतः
He entered the chariot of the sun, but Achyuta was unable to destroy him there.
अवध्यत्वं वरं प्रादाच्छस्त्रैरस्त्रैश्च नारद
O Nārada, he had received a boon of invulnerability to weapons and missiles.
संत्यज्य भास्कररथं पातालमुपयादथ
Abandoning the sun’s chariot, he then went down to the netherworld.
ददृशे दानवपतिस्तं प्रगृह्येदमब्रवीत्
The lord of the Dānavas saw him, seized him, and spoke these words:
अयं स्पृशतु मां फेनः पराभ्यां गृह्य दानवः
Let this foam touch me, said the Dānava, grasping it with both hands.
तस्मिञ्छक्रो ऽजद् वज्रमन्तर्हितमपीश्वरः
Then Śakra struck with the vajra, though the lord was concealed within.
समये च तथा नष्टे ब्रह्महत्यास्पृशद्धरिम्
And when he was thus destroyed, Brahmahatyā touched Hari.
