चिन्तयित्वा तु सुचिरं पावकं ते व्यसर्जयन्
After thinking for a long time, they released the fire.
दुष्प्रवेशं च तं मत्वा चिन्तां वह्निः परां गतः
Considering it difficult to enter, the fire fell into deep anxiety.
निष्क्रामनतीं महापङ्क्तिं हंसानां विमलां तथा
He saw a great, pure line of swans departing.
वञ्चयित्वा प्रतीहारं प्रविवेश हराजिरम्
Having deceived the gatekeeper, he entered Hara's courtyard.
प्राह प्रहस्य गम्भीरं देवा द्वारि स्थिता इति
He spoke, laughing deeply: 'The gods are standing at the door.'
विनिष्क्रन्तो ऽजिराच्छर्वो वह्निना सह नारद
Śarva quickly came out together with Agni, O Nārada.
शिरोभिरवनीं जग्मुः सेन्द्रार्कशशिपावकाः
With Indra, the Sun, the Moon, and Fire, they touched their heads to the ground.
प्रणामावनतानां वो दास्ये ऽहं वरमुत्तमम्
'For you who bow in reverence, I will grant the highest boon.'
तदिदं त्यज्यतां तावन्महामैथुनमीश्वर
'Therefore, let this great act of union be abandoned for now, O Lord.'
ममेदं तेज उद्रिक्तं कश्चिद् देवः प्रतीच्छतु
'Let some god accept this excessive energy of mine.'
असीदन्त यथा मग्नाः पङ्के वृन्दारका इव
They stood, as if sunk in mud, like a group of boys.
प्रोवाच मुञ्च तेजस्त्वं प्रतीच्छाम्येष शङ्कर
He said, 'Release your energy; I, Śaṅkara, will receive it.'
जलं तृषानते वै यद्वत् तैलपानं पिपासितः
Just as a thirsty man desires to drink oil instead of water.
स्वस्थाः सुराः समामन्त्र्य हरं जग्मुस्त्रिविष्टपम्
Having bid farewell to Hara, the gods, restored to themselves, went to heaven.
समभ्येत्य महादेवीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Approaching the great goddess, they spoke these words.
नीतः प्रोक्तो निषिद्धस्तु पुत्रोत्पत्तिं तवोदरात्
'He has been taken away, forbidden to bring forth a son from your womb.'
शशाप दैवतान् सर्वान् नष्टपुत्रोद्भवा शिवा
Śivā cursed all the gods: 'You shall be deprived of offspring.'
तस्मात् ते न जनष्यन्तिस्वासुयोषित्सु पुत्रकान्
Therefore, your wives will not bear sons for you.
आहूय मालिनीं स्वनातुं मतिं चक्रे तपोधना
Summoning Mālinī, the ascetic resolved to have her as a nurse.
तत्स्वेदं पार्वती चैव मेने कीदृग्गुणेन हि
Pārvatī considered what quality that sweat possessed.
तस्यां गतायां शैलेयी मलाच्चक्रे गजाननम्
When she departed, the daughter of the mountain fashioned the filth into an elephant-faced one.
कृत्वोत्ससर्ज भूम्यां च स्थिता भद्रासने पुनः
Having made him, she placed him on the earth and again sat upon her auspicious seat.
ईषद्धासामुमा दृष्ट्वा मालिनीं प्राह नारद
Seeing Umā with a slight smile, adorned with garlands, Nārada spoke.
साथोवाच हसाम्येवं भवत्यास्तनयः किल
He said, 'I am laughing because, it is said, you will have a son.'
तच्छुत्वा मम हासो ऽयं संजातो ऽद्य कृशोदरि
Hearing this, O slender-waisted one, this laughter of mine has arisen today.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो देवी सस्नौ तत्र विधानतः
Hearing these words, the goddess bathed there according to the prescribed rite.
ततः शंभुः समागत्य तस्मिन् भद्रासने त्वपि
Then Śambhu arrived and also sat upon that auspicious seat.
उमास्वेदं भवस्वेदं जलभूतिसमन्वितम्
Umā's sweat and Bhava's sweat, together with the water element—
अपत्यं हि विदित्वा च प्रीतिमान् भुवनेश्वरः
Knowing that it was for offspring, the Lord of the world was pleased.
रुद्रः स्नात्वर्च्य देवादीन् वाग्भिरद्भिः पितृनपि
Rudra, having bathed, worshipped the gods and also the ancestors with words and with water.
