तपसा धूतपापासि वरं वृणु यथेप्सितम्
By your austerity, your sins are burned away; choose a boon as you desire.
वरदो भव तेनाहं यास्ये प्रीतिमनुत्तमाम्
Because I am the bestower of boons, I will grant you supreme satisfaction.
गाणपत्यं विभौ भक्तिमजेयत्वं च धर्मिताम्
Grant me devotion to Gaṇapati, victory, and righteousness.
वृणीष्व वरमव्यग्रा वरं दास्ये तवाम्बिके
Choose a boon without hesitation; I will grant you a boon, O Ambikā.
वरः प्रदीयतां मह्यं वर्णं कनकसंनिभम्
Grant me a boon: a complexion like gold.
कोशं कृष्णं परित्यज्य पद्मकिञ्जल्कसन्निभाः
Abandoning the dark sheath, let my body be like the filaments of a lotus.
प्रोवाच गिरिजां देवो वाक्यं स्वार्थाय वासवः
Indra spoke to Girijā words for his own purpose.
त्वत्कोशसंभवा चेयं कौशिकी कौशिको ऽप्यहम्
This Kauśikī has arisen from your treasury, and I am also Kauśika.
सहस्राक्षो ऽपि तां गृह्य विन्ध्यं वेगाज्जगाम च
Even the thousand-eyed one, having taken her, swiftly went to Vindhya.
पूज्यमाना सुरैर्नाम्ना ख्याता त्वं विन्ध्यवासिनी
Honored by the gods and known by name, you are famed as Vindhyavāsinī.
भवामरारिहन्त्रीति उक्त्वा स्वर्गमुपागमत्
Saying, 'You are the slayer of the enemies of the gods,' he ascended to heaven.
प्रणम्य च महेशानं स्थिता सविनयं मुने
Having bowed to Maheśāna, she stood respectfully, O sage.
तस्थौ व्रषसहस्रं हि महामोहनके मुने
She remained for a thousand years in the great delusion, O sage.
चक्षुभुः सागराः सप्त देवाश् च भयमागमन्
The seven oceans were agitated, and the gods became fearful.
प्रणम्योचुर्महेशानं जगत् क्षुब्धं तु किं त्विदम्
Having bowed, they said to Maheśāna, 'Why is the world disturbed like this?'
तेनाक्रान्तास्त्विमे लोका जग्मुः क्षोभं दुरत्ययम्
Because of that, these worlds have been overwhelmed and entered into an unbearable agitation.
आगच्छ शक्रर् गच्छामो यावत् तन्न समाप्यते
Come, O Śakra, let us go until that is resolved.
स नूनं देवराजस्य पदमैन्दं हरिष्यति
He will surely seize the Indra's throne from the king of the gods.
भयाज्ज्ञानं ततो नष्टं भाविकर्मप्रचोदनात्
Out of fear, knowledge was lost, prompted by destined actions.
जगाम मन्दरगिरिं तच्छृङ्गे न्यविशत्ततः
He went to Mount Mandara and settled upon its peak.
चिन्तयित्वा तु सुचिरं पावकं ते व्यसर्जयन्
After thinking for a long time, they released the fire.
दुष्प्रवेशं च तं मत्वा चिन्तां वह्निः परां गतः
Considering it difficult to enter, the fire fell into deep anxiety.
निष्क्रामनतीं महापङ्क्तिं हंसानां विमलां तथा
He saw a great, pure line of swans departing.
वञ्चयित्वा प्रतीहारं प्रविवेश हराजिरम्
Having deceived the gatekeeper, he entered Hara's courtyard.
प्राह प्रहस्य गम्भीरं देवा द्वारि स्थिता इति
He spoke, laughing deeply: 'The gods are standing at the door.'
विनिष्क्रन्तो ऽजिराच्छर्वो वह्निना सह नारद
Śarva quickly came out together with Agni, O Nārada.
शिरोभिरवनीं जग्मुः सेन्द्रार्कशशिपावकाः
With Indra, the Sun, the Moon, and Fire, they touched their heads to the ground.
प्रणामावनतानां वो दास्ये ऽहं वरमुत्तमम्
'For you who bow in reverence, I will grant the highest boon.'
तदिदं त्यज्यतां तावन्महामैथुनमीश्वर
'Therefore, let this great act of union be abandoned for now, O Lord.'
ममेदं तेज उद्रिक्तं कश्चिद् देवः प्रतीच्छतु
'Let some god accept this excessive energy of mine.'
