शोभते वारुणिः श्रीमान् द्वितीय इव भास्करः
The illustrious Varuṇi shone, like a second sun.
पृष्टश्चागमने हेतुं प्रत्युवाच दिवाकरम्
When asked, he explained to the Sun the reason for his coming.
सुतां संवरणस्यार्थे तस्य त्वं दातुमर्हसि
It is for the sake of Saṃvaraṇa’s daughter; you ought to give her to him.
गृहागताय द्विजपुङ्गवाय राज्ञोर्ऽथतः संवरणस्य देवाः
To the best of the twice-born, who had come to his house on behalf of King Saṃvaraṇa, the gods—
सा चापि संस्मृत्य नृपात्मजं तं कृताञ्जलिर्वारुणिमाह देवी
And she, recalling that prince, with joined palms, spoke to Varuṇi, the goddess.
दृष्टो ह्यरण्ये ऽमरगर्भतुल्यो नृपात्मजो लक्षणतो ऽभिजाने
I saw the prince in the forest—like the child of an immortal; by his marks, I recognize him.
कटिस्तथा सिंहकटिर्यथैव क्षामं च मध्यं त्रिबलीनिबद्धम्
His hips are like those of a lion, his waist is slender, marked with three folds.
हस्तौ तथा पद्मदलोद्भवाङ्कौ छत्राकृतिस्तस्य शिरो विभाति
His hands and feet are shaped like lotus petals; his head shines, shaped like a parasol.
दीर्घाश्च तस्याङ्गुलयः सुपर्वाः पद्भ्यां कराभ्यां दशनाश्च सुभ्राः
His fingers are long and well-jointed; his teeth are beautiful, both on his hands and feet.
रक्तस्तथा पञ्चसु राजपुत्रः कृष्णश्चतुर्भिस्त्रिभिरानतो ऽपि
The prince is red in five places, dark in four, and bent in three.
वृतः स भर्ता भगवान् हि पूर्वं तं राजपुत्रं भुवि संविचिन्त्य
That lord, her husband, had once before considered that prince upon the earth.
नेहान्यकामां प्रवदन्ति सन्तो दातुं तथान्यस्य विभो क्षमस्व
The wise do not speak of giving to another when another is desired; O lord, forgive me.
ज्ञात्वा च तत्रार्कसुतां सकामां मुदा युतो वाक्यमिदं जगाद
Knowing that the daughter of the Sun desired him, he joyfully spoke these words.
स एव चायाति ममाश्रमं वै ऋक्षात्मजः संवरणो हि नाम्ना
That very Saṃvaraṇa, son of Ṛkṣa, is coming to my hermitage now, by name.
दृष्ट्वा वसिष्ठं प्रणिपत्य मूर्ध्ना स्थितस्त्वपश्यत् तपतीं नरेन्द्रः
Seeing Vasiṣṭha, the king bowed his head in reverence and then beheld Tapatī.
पप्रच्छ केयं ललना द्विजेन्द्र स वारुणिः प्राह नराधिपेन्द्रम्
He asked, 'Who is this lady, O best of twice-born?' Varuṇi replied to the lord of men.
मया तवार्थाय दिवाकरो ऽर्थितः प्रादान्मया त्वाश्रममानिनिन्ये
'At your request, I entreated the Sun; he gave her, and I brought her to your hermitage.'
इत्येवमुक्तो नृपतिः प्रहृष्टो जग्राह पाणिं विधिवत् तपत्याः
Thus addressed, the delighted king took Tapatī’s hand according to the proper rite.
रराम तन्वी भवनोत्तमेषु यता महैन्द्रं दिवि दैत्यकन्या
She delighted in the splendid palaces, just as the daughter of the Daityas delighted in mighty Indra's heaven.
स जातकर्मादिभिरेव संस्कृतो विवर्द्धताज्येन हुतो यथाग्निः
He was consecrated with the rites beginning from birth, and was nourished with clarified butter, like fire is fed.
नवाब्दिकस्य व्रतबन्धनं च वेदे च शास्त्रे विधिपारगो ऽबूत्
At the age of nine, he underwent the rite of initiation, and became thoroughly versed in the Veda and the scriptures.
ख्यातः पृथिव्यां पुरुषोत्तमो ऽसौ नाम्ना कुरुः संवरणस्य पुत्रः
He became renowned on earth as Puruṣottama, named Kuru, the son of Samvaraṇa.
दारक्रियार्थमकरोद् यत्नं शुभकुले ततः
He made efforts to arrange a marriage within a noble family.
कुरोरर्थाय वतवान् स प्रादात् कुरवे ऽपि ताम्
For Kuru's sake, he requested her and gave her also to Kuru.
रेमे तन्व्या सह तया पौलोम्या मघवानिव
He enjoyed happiness together with that slender-waisted Paulomī, like Maghavan (Indra) with his consort.
विदित्वा योवराज्याय विधानेनाभ्यषेचयत्
Knowing this, he anointed him for the kingdom according to the prescribed rites.
पालयामास स महीं पुत्रवच्च स्वयं प्रजाः
He protected the earth and its people as a father cares for his own children.
स सर्वपालकश्चासीत् प्रजापालो महाबलः
He was the protector of all, a mighty guardian of the people.
यावत्कीर्तिः सुसंस्था हि तावद्वासः सुरैः सह
As long as his fame was firmly established, he dwelt among the gods.
विचचार महीं सर्वां कीर्त्यर्थं तु नराधिपः
The king traveled across the whole earth for the sake of fame.
