विहस्य मेघगम्भीरं प्रोवाच पुरुषोत्तमः
Smiling with a voice deep as thunder, the Supreme Person spoke.
येन सर्वे समेत्यैवं मम पार्श्वमुपागताः
By whom have you all gathered together and come to my side in this way?
तत्कुरुध्वं जयो येन समाश्रित्य भवेद्धि वः
Do that by which, relying upon it, victory will surely be yours.
अमीषां मानसी कन्या मेना नाम्नास्ति देवताः
Among these, there is a divine maiden born of the mind, named Menā.
प्रार्थयध्वं सतीं मेनां प्रालेयाद्रेरिहार्थतः
Request the virtuous Menā from the icy mountain for your purpose.
दक्षकोपाद् यया मुक्तं मलवज्जीवितं प्रियम्
By whom, freed from the wrath of Daksha, life was cleansed like impurity.
स हनिष्यति दैत्येन्द्रं महिषं सपदानुगम्
She will slay the lord of the demons, Mahisha, along with his followers.
तत्र पृथूदके तीर्थे पूज्यन्तां पितरो ऽव्ययः
There, at the broad-watered holy place, let the imperishable ancestors be worshipped.
जिहासतात्मनः सर्वे इत्थं वै क्रियतामिति
For those wishing to relinquish themselves, let it be done thus.
कृताञ्जलिपुटा भूत्वा पप्रच्छुः परम्श्वरम्
With hands joined in reverence, they questioned the supreme lord.
उद्भवं तस्य तीर्थस्य भगवान् प्रब्रवीतु नः
May the blessed one tell us the origin of that holy place.
यस्यां हि पितरो दिव्याः पूज्यास्माभिः प्रयन्ततः
In which, indeed, the divine ancestors are to be worshipped by us as we depart.
कुरुक्षेत्रोद्भवं पुण्यं प्रोक्तवांस्तां तिथीमपि
He also spoke of that sacred day, which arose from Kurukshetra.
कृस्यादौ समभवदृक्षात् संवरणो ऽवत्
At the beginning of the ploughing season, Saṃvaraṇa was born from the constellation.
बाल्ये ऽपि धर्मनिरतो मद्भक्तश्च सदाभवत्
Even in childhood, he was devoted to righteousness and was always my devotee.
स चास्याध्यापयामास साङ्गान् वेदानुदारधीः
And that noble-minded one taught him the Vedas with all their branches.
सर्वकर्मसु निक्षिप्य वसिष्ठं तपसां निधिम्
Entrusting all duties to Vasiṣṭha, the treasure of austerities,
वैभ्राजं स जगामाथ अथोन्मादनमभ्ययात्
he then went to Vaibhrāja and afterwards entered a state of madness.
अवितृपतः सुगन्धस्य समन्ताद् व्यचरद् वनम्
Unsated by the fragrance, he wandered through the forest in all directions.
कह्लारपद्मकुमुदैः कमलेन्दीवरैरपि
With blue lotuses, red lotuses, white lotuses, and day-blooming lotuses as well,
तासां मध्ये ददर्शाथ कन्यां संवरणो ऽधिकाम्
There, among them, Saṃvaraṇa saw a maiden surpassing all others.
जातः सा च तमीक्ष्यैव कामबाणातुराभवत्
She, upon seeing him, was struck by the arrow of love.
राजा चलासनो भूम्यां निपपात तुरङ्गमात्
The king, his seat unsteady, fell to the ground from his horse.
सिषिचुर्वारिणाभ्येत्य लब्धसंज्ञो ऽभवत् क्षणात्
Approaching, they sprinkled him with water, and he regained consciousness in a moment.
ताभिराश्वासिता चापि मधुरैर्वचनाम्बुभिः
And comforted by them with sweet words, like water,
गतस्तु मेरुशिखरं कामचारी यथामरः
He went to the summit of Meru, moving at will like a god.
तदाप्रभृति नाश्नाति दिवा स्वपिति नो निशि
From that time, he did not eat by day nor sleep at night.
तपतीतापितं वीरं पार्थिवं तपसां निधिः
The treasure of austerities tormented the king, scorched by suffering.
विवेश देवं तिग्मांशु ददर्श स्यन्दने स्थितम्
He entered the god, the blazing one, and saw him standing in his chariot.
प्रतिप्रणमितश्चासौ भास्करेणाविशद् रथे
Having been respectfully greeted, he entered the chariot with the Sun.
