पातालं प्रविवेशाथ ततः स्वभवनं गतः
Then he entered the netherworld and went to his own palace.
अकार्यकारकेत्येवं भृयो मालवटं गतः
Thus, being called one who acts wrongly, he went to Malavata.
समं जगाम तत् पुण्यं यक्षमण्डलमुत्तमम्
He went together to that sacred and excellent region of the Yakshas.
अजीजनत् सुतं शुभ्रं महिषं कामरूपिणम्
He begot a pure son, a buffalo who could assume any form at will.
सा चाभ्यगाद् दितिवरं रक्षन्ती शीलमात्मनः
And she approached the noble Diti, preserving her own virtue.
खङ्ग निष्कृष्य तरसा महिषं समुपाद्रवत्
Drawing his sword swiftly, he rushed at the buffalo.
रक्षिता गुह्यकैः साध्वी निवार्य महिषं ततः
That virtuous woman was protected by the Guhyakas, who then restrained the buffalo.
निपपात सरो दिव्यं ततो दैत्यैऽभवन्मृतः
He fell into a divine lake, and thus the Daitya died.
यक्षानाश्रित्य तस्थौ स कालयन् श्वापदान् मुन्
He took refuge among the Yakshas, O sage, while driving away the wild beasts.
चितामारोपितः सा च श्यामा तं चारुहत् पतिम्
She, dark-complexioned, was placed upon the funeral pyre and ascended it with her husband.
व्यद्रावयत् स तान् यक्षान् खङ्गपाणिर्भयङ्करः
He drove away those Yakshas, terrifying, sword in hand.
ऋते संरक्षितारं हि महिषं रम्भनन्दनम्
Except for the protector, the buffalo, the son of Rambha.
यो ऽजयत् सर्वतो देवान् सेन्द्ररुद्रार्कमारुतान्
He who conquered all the gods everywhere, together with Indra, Rudra, Arka, and Marut.
राज्ये ऽभिषिक्तश्च महासुरेन्द्रैर्विनिर्जितैः शम्बरतारकाद्यैः
He was anointed in the kingdom by the great lords of the Asuras, having defeated Shambara, Taraka, and others.
स्थानानि त्यक्तानि शशीन्द्रभास्करैर्धर्मश्च दूरे प्रतियोजितश्च
The realms were abandoned by the Moon, Indra, and the Sun, and righteousness was cast far away and opposed.
जग्मुः पुरस्कृत्य रिचामहं ते द्रष्टुं तदा चक्रधरं श्रियः पतिम्
They went, led by me with a hymn, to see at that time the wielder of the discus, the lord of Shri.
दृष्टावा प्रणम्यैव च सिद्दिसाधकौ न्यवेदयंस्तन्महिषादिचेष्टितम्
Having seen him, and bowing down, the two who accomplish success reported to him the deeds of the buffalo-born.
आक्रम्य नाकात्तु निराकृता वयं कृतावनिस्था महिषासुरेण
Having been driven from heaven, we were cast down and made to dwell on earth by the buffalo Asura.
न चेद् व्रजामो ऽद्य रसातलं हि संकाल्यमाना युधि दानवेन
If we do not go today to the netherworld, we will be destroyed in battle by the Danava.
दृष्ट्वाथ चक्रे सहसैव कोपं कालाग्निकल्पो हरिरव्ययात्मा
Seeing this, Hari, the imperishable self, suddenly became angry, like the fire of time.
तथैव शक्रादिषु दैवतेषु महर्द्धि तेजो वदनाद् विनिःसुतम्
In the same way, from the faces of the gods, beginning with Shakra, great splendor and energy issued forth.
कात्यायनस्याप्रतिमस्य तेन महर्षिणा तेज उपाकृतं च
By that great sage Katyayana, peerless, the energy was gathered together.
तस्माच्च जाता तरलायताक्षी कात्यायनी योगविशुद्धदेहा
From that, she was born—Katyayani, with wide, restless eyes, her body purified by yoga.
याम्येन केशा हरितेजसा च भुजास्तथाष्टादश संप्जज्ञिरे
Her hair was from Yama, her arms from Hari's energy, and thus eighteen arms came into being.
ऊरब चजङ्घे च नितम्बसंयुते जाते जलेशस्य तु तेजसा हि
Her thighs and shanks, joined at the hips, were produced by the energy of the lord of waters.
दिवाकराणमपि तेजसाङ्गुलीः कराङ्गुलीश्च वसुतेजसैव
Her fingers were from the energy of the Sun, and her hand-fingers from the energy of the Earth.
साध्येन च भ्रयुगलं सुकान्तिमत् कन्दर्पबाणासनसन्निभं बभौ
Her beautiful pair of brows was from the Sadhyas, shining like the bow of Kama.
कात्यायनीत्येव तदा बभौ सा नाम्ना च तेनैव जगत्प्रसिद्धा
Then she shone forth as Katyayani by name, and by that name she became renowned in the world.
शक्तिं हुताशः श्वसनश्च चापं तूणौ तथाक्ष्य्यशरौ विवस्वान्
Agni gave his power, Vāyu his bow, and Sūrya his inexhaustible quiver and arrows.
ब्रह्मऽक्षमालां सकमण्डलुं च कालो ऽसिमुग्रं सह चर्मणा च
Brahmā gave a rosary and water-pot, and Kāla gave a fierce sword along with a shield.
