Salutations are offered to you, O Divine One, who is the very branch, leaf, shoot, and sprout of all creation. From your navel, the vast mid-space arose, and from your mind, the radiant moon was born. From your sides emerged the twin gods, and from your feet, the Śūdras came into being. Once again, from your navel the mid-space unfolded, and from your mind, the moon took shape. From your anger, the three-eyed Rudra was born; from your head, the expanse of the sky was produced. Plants and herbs sprang forth from your hair. O Virāj, I bow to you with reverence. You are the sacred syllable Om, the utterance vaṣaṭ, the invocation vauṣaṭ, and the offerings svadhā and sudhā. All forms and the formless are yours; you are the very embodiment of the Vedas. To you, I bow. You are the essence of all holy waters and the heart of every sacrifice. Salutations to you, who flow with a thousand streams, and again to you, with a hundred streams. You are the giver of gold and of Brahman, the bestower of all things. Salutations to you, Supreme Brahman; salutations to you as Brahman manifest in sound. You are intellect, you are what is to be understood, and you are knowledge itself; I bow to you. You are the protector, the vessel, the purifier, and the sanctifier. Om, salutations! You are the remover of obstacles, the leader and guide, the revered and foremost, the supporter of the entire universe. You are the sacrificial vessels—onefold, manifold, and threefold. You are the knower, the object to be known, knowledge itself, the object of meditation, the meditator, and the Lord. You are the very limbs of yoga, O Lord, all-pervading; I bow to you. You are initiation, the sacrificial cake, the sacrificial animal, and the carrier of the animal. You are the great person, the path, and you shine with the forms of a thousand suns and moons. You are the lord of the wheel of time, O Lord of existence; salutations to you, Supreme Person. You are the lord of men, the lord of Brahma, the lord of the sun; I bow to you. You are the form of Mitra and Varuṇa, formless, sinless, and supreme. You are the creator above, transcendent, and the source of upward-flowing energy; I bow to you. Helpless before all sins, I have taken refuge in you. O sage, this great prayer was once spoken by the Lord himself in Varanasi. Thus, when Rudra was overcome by sin, he became tranquil through this praise. Freed from sin, his form became peaceful, and he was worshipped by the renowned and best of gods. Whoever properly recites this sacred hymn will indeed be freed from sin. I bow to Hayashirsha, to Bhava, to Vishnu, to Trivikrama. I bow to Narayana; I bow to him who sits upon Garuda. I bow to him who is the undivided fruit of desire, beloved of the Brahmanas. I bow to Hamsa, to Shambhu, and to Brahma with the Prajapatis. I bow to Shiva, to Vishnu, to the golden-eyed one, to the lord of cows, clad in yellow garments. I bow to the god Ardhanarishvara, destroyer of sin. I bow to the universal form, to the fragrant one, to the ever-auspicious Shiva. I bow to the lotus-eyed one, to Keshava, who bears the scent of milk. I bow to the tranquil one, to Markandeya, and to Jambuka. I bow to Karttikeya, to Bahlika, and to the crested one. I bow to Langalisha, and to the lord of Shri. Thus, with humility and devotion, the glory of the Supreme is praised.
