ततःप्रभृति राजासौ सकलत्रो महामतिः
From that time onward, the king, wise and with all his wives,
देवदेवस्य माहात्म्यात्पुत्रो जातो महाबलः
By the greatness of the god of gods, a son of great strength was born.
अथाहं मन्दराद्देवि कौतु- कात्तु समागतः
Then I, O goddess, came from Mandara out of curiosity.
योगैश्वर्येण च मया कृतं वै पुरमात्मनः तच्छिवं शाश्वतं स्थानं दत्तं देवि तदा मया
By my yogic power I created a city for myself; that eternal abode of Śiva was given by me, O goddess, at that time.
मार्कंडेयेश्वराद्देवादुत्तरे वरवर्णिनि .
O beautiful one, to the north of the god Mārkaṇḍeyāśvara.
येऽर्चयिष्यन्ति सततं शिवेश्वरमनुत्तमम्
Those who always worship the supreme lord Śiveśvara,
विदित्वार्भगुरुं लोकं ये द्रक्ष्यंति शिवेश्व रम्
Having known the revered teacher of the world, those who will see Śiveśvara,
मोक्षं सुदुर्लभं मत्वा संसारं चातिभीषणम् ।। 5.2.37.
Considering liberation as extremely difficult to attain and worldly existence as very terrifying.
सर्वावस्थोऽपि यो मर्त्यः संश्रयेत्तं शिवेश्वरम्
Whatever his condition, any mortal who seeks refuge in that Lord Shiva—
आख्यानं प्रयतो मर्त्त्यो य इदं श्रावयेच्छुचिः
—or who, with devotion and purity, narrates or causes this story to be heard—
एष ते कथिता देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
This, O Devi, is the power I have told you, which destroys sin.
देवं स्वर्गप्रदं देवि महापातकना शनम्
O Devi, the god who grants heaven and destroys even great sins—
पुरा वैवस्वते कल्पे प्राप्ते वाराहसंज्ञके
Long ago, in the Vaivasvata cycle, during the period called Vārāha—
महाकालवने रम्ये रममाणस्य पार्वति
While delighting in the beautiful great Kāla forest, O Pārvatī—
पृष्टोऽहं च तदा श्रुत्वा शब्दं चातीव दुःसहम्
I was then questioned, having heard a sound that was exceedingly unbearable.
एते गणेशाः क्रीडंति मध्ये वै वीरको गणः
These Gaṇeśas are playing, and among them is the Gaṇa named Vīraka.
कुसुमैर्हन्यतेऽप्यर्थं पूज्यते कुसुमोत्करैः
He is struck with flowers for sport, and worshipped with heaps of blossoms.
नानाश्चर्यगुणाधारो गणेश्वरशतार्चितः
He possesses many wondrous qualities and is worshipped by hundreds of Gaṇeśvaras.
न दृश्यते विना पुण्यैः पुत्रस्याननपंकजम्
The lotus-face of your son cannot be seen except by those with merit.
कदाहमीदृशं पुत्रं द्रक्ष्याम्यानन्ददायकम् प्रोक्तं पार्वति पुत्रोऽयं प्रदत्तो वीरकोऽधुना
When will I see such a son, a giver of joy? It was declared: 'O Pārvatī, this son, Vīraka, is now given.'
एष एव सुतस्तेस्तु नयनानन्ददायकः 5.2.38.
This indeed is the son who brings delight to the eyes.
मदीयं वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रेषिता विजया त्वया
Hearing my words, you sent Vijayā.
विजयोवाच गणपं गणमध्ये च वर्त्तिनम् किमुन्मत्तवदत्यर्थं नृत्यरागेण मोहितः
Vijayā said to the Gaṇa who was among the Gaṇas: 'Why are you, as if mad, so absorbed and enchanted by the dance and music?'
इत्युक्तो भयसंत्रस्तः कुसुमैर्भूषितस्तदा
Thus addressed, he, terrified with fear and adorned with flowers at that time—
भूषितं कुसुमैर्दृष्ट्वा भयत्रस्तं च वीरकम्
Seeing Vīraka adorned with flowers and trembling with fear—
एह्येहि जातोऽसि मे पुत्रकस्त्वं देवेन दत्तोऽधुना वीरकोसि
'Come, come! You have now become my son, given by the god; you are now Vīraka.'
मूर्धन्युपाघ्राय सम्मार्ज्य गात्राणि सा भूषयामास दिव्यैः स्वयं भूषणैः
She inhaled the fragrance from his head, gently smoothed his limbs, and adorned him with divine ornaments of her own.
कोमलैः पल्लवैश्चित्रितैश्चारुभिर्दिव्य मन्त्रोद्भवैस्तस्य शुभ्रैस्ततः
With tender, variegated, and beautiful divine leaves, born from mantras, pure and shining, she decorated him.
एवमाधाय चोवक्थ कृत्वा स्रजं मूर्ध्नि गोरोचनापत्रभंगोज्वलैः
Thus, after placing and arranging a garland on his head, with bright marks of gorocana and leaf fragments, you spoke.
सोऽपि सिद्ध्याकुले गण्डशैले मिलद्रत्नजाले वृहच्छा लतालाकुले
He too, in the Siddha-thronged Gaṇḍa mountain, amidst meeting nets of gems and thick clusters of great vines—
