That sage performed austerity there for twelve years.
Then, having understood his resolve, I was approached by you at that time.
With his radiance, he illuminated the mountain, drying up the reservoirs of water.
All the oceans were agitated, as were the moon and the sun; O god, an untimely dissolution will occur—there is no doubt.
Let a son be given to that sage, Mṛkaṇḍa.
O wide-eyed one, let him be imperishable, like another thousand-eyed one.
O queen of the gods, this great sage Mṛkaṇḍa desires a son with the hue of a blue lotus petal and eyes like blue lotus petals.
You too, O goddess, spoke again out of compassion, O lover of devotion.
How are you praised by the wise as the giver of the fruits of austerities?
You cause turmoil among all the demons and all the hosts of gods.
No one else would grant me the supreme boon for the sake of compassion.
The reason is that the great lord Maheśa is compassionate and devoted to his devotees.
Through austerity, when sin is exhausted, and the mind is purified, one attains Brahmanhood.
O goddess, I have described you with affectionate, auspicious words.
O mother of Skanda, whose face resembles a full moon adorned with beauty.
O elephant-gaited one, you said, 'I will accomplish what you have spoken.'
You are illusion, fortune, radiance, the glorious one, the stream of faith and beauty.
You shine forth in many forms, having bewildered the entire world.
To this sage, whose body is now exhausted by austerities,
I too have spoken, O wide-eyed one; listen to my words.
In the east of Pattaneśvara, there stands a supreme liṅga.
Hearing my words, you also told the best of twice-born: 'By worshipping the liṅga there, you will obtain an excellent son.'
Thus prompted by you, the brāhmaṇa, having resolved, acted accordingly.
There, seeing the great liṅga, bestower of sons and destroyer of sins,
Then, after some time, I emerged together with you.
Know that I am Śarva; tell me, what shall I do for you?
Whatever boon you desire, O Brahman, that I shall grant you today.
With devotion, that best of sages joyfully spoke from his heart.
Then, O goddess, I said: 'Mṛkaṇḍa, the best of sages, endowed with prosperity and knowledge, long-lived, all-knowing, and wise.'
Meanwhile, O goddess, the great ascetic appeared.
