एवमस्त्विति लिंगेन प्रोक्तं तुष्टेन पार्वति यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण चिरायुर्जायते नरः
Thus, Parvati, pleased, spoke through the liṅga, 'So be it.' By merely seeing it, a person attains long life.
यः समीक्षति तल्लिंगं कंथडेश्वरमीश्वरम्
Whoever beholds that liṅga, the Lord of Kaṃthaḍeśvara, the Lord,
पापकंथाविनिर्मुक्तो मुक्तिं यास्यति गौरि सः पुनाति पातकान्सर्वान्मम नामानुकीर्तनात्
O Gauri, he is freed from the bondage of sin and will attain liberation; by uttering my name, he purifies all sins.
तेऽधन्याः पुरुषा लोके तेषां जन्म निरर्थकम्
Those men in the world are unfortunate; their birth is in vain.
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः 5.2.34.
O goddess, thus I have told you the power that destroys sin.
महासिद्धिप्रदं देवि ब्रह्महत्याविनाशनम्
O goddess, it bestows great accomplishment and destroys the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa.
आसीत्प्रजापतिस्त्वष्टा तस्य पुत्रः कुशध्वजः
There was Prajāpati Tvaṣṭṛ; his son was Kuśadhvaja.
तस्य पुत्रं हतं श्रुत्वा त्वष्टा क्रुद्धः प्रजापतिः
Hearing that his son was slain, Tvaṣṭṛ, the lord of creatures, became angry.
अद्य पश्यंतु मे वीर्यं त्रयो लोकाः सदेवताः
‘Today, let the three worlds with the gods witness my power!’
स्वकर्मनिरतो येन मत्सुतो विनिपातितः
By whom, intent on his own duty, my son was struck down.
ततो वृत्रः समुत्तस्थौ ज्वालामालासमाकुलः
Then Vṛtra arose, wreathed in a garland of flames.
इंद्रशत्रुरमेयात्मा त्वष्टुस्तेजोऽभिबृंहितः
The enemy of Indra, of unfathomable nature, magnified by Tvaṣṭṛ’s energy.
वधाय चात्मनो दृष्ट्वा वृत्रं शक्रो महासुरम्
Seeing Vṛtra, the great demon, Indra regarded him as the cause of his own death.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे प्राप्तो वृत्रो बलवतां वरः
At that very moment, Vṛtra, the foremost among the powerful, arrived.
दैत्यो वृत्रो महाकायश्चक्रे संग्राममुल्बणम् 5.2.35.
The demon Vṛtra, of immense size, initiated a fierce battle.
छिन्नभिन्नतनुत्राणक्रोधरक्तधरातलम्
With bodies and armor shattered and broken, the earth was stained red with the blood of wrath.
कबंधसंघघटनं घटितामरसैनिकम्
There was a massing of headless bodies and the assembling of the gods' army.
कल्लोलरुधिरोद्गारपाटलीकृतदिङ्मुखम्
The quarters of the sky were reddened by waves of gushing blood.
वासवं बंधयित्वा तु स्वर्गलोकं जगाम ह
Having bound Vāsava, Vṛtra then went to the world of the gods.
ततस्तु बद्धे देवेंद्रे बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः
Then, when the lord of the gods was bound, Bṛhaspati, wise of mind,
दृष्ट्वा तथाविधं शक्रमाशीर्भिरभिनंद्य च
Seeing Indra in such a state, and greeting him with blessings,
अनुकूलो न कालोयं सुरेशस्य तवाधुना दृष्टा हि प्रवराः सर्वे मया तत्र महासुराः
"This is not a favorable time for you, lord of the gods. I have seen all the foremost great demons there."
एकैकोपि विजेतुं त्वां शक्तः स्यादिति मे मतिः दृष्टो वापि श्रुतो वापि यादृशो ह्यवलोकितः
"Each one alone could be capable of defeating you, so I think. Whether seen or heard of, such is their might as I have observed."
बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रः संभ्रममागमत
Hearing Bṛhaspati's words, Indra became anxious.
किमत्र प्रतिकर्त्तव्यं वद तावद्बृहस्पते मत्सकाशं समेष्यंति स च वृत्रो महा बलः ।। 5.2.35.
"What should be done here, tell me, O Bṛhaspati? They will come to me, and Vṛtra is exceedingly strong."
इति शक्रवचः श्रुत्वा बृहस्पतिरुवाच तम्
Hearing Indra's words, Bṛhaspati spoke to him:
महाकालवने रम्ये खंडेश्वरस्य दक्षिणे
"In the beautiful great Kāla forest, to the south of Khaṇḍeśvara—"
तदाराधय यत्नेन तत्ते कामं प्रदास्यति
"Worship him there with effort; he will grant you your desire."
महाकालवने देवि दृष्ट्वा लिंगमनुत्तमम्
"In the great Kāla forest, O goddess, seeing the supreme liṅga—"
नमो देवाधिदेवाय शंकराय वृषाय च वरेण्याय नमो नित्यं नमस्ते सर्वकामद
"Salutation to the god of gods, to Śaṅkara, to the bull-bannered one, to the most excellent; salutation always to you, who grants all desires."
