मातृद्वयं मया प्राप्तमस्मिन्नेव हि जन्मनि
I have obtained two mothers in this very birth.
सोऽहं तपः करिष्यामि चैत्र आनीयतामिति
Therefore, I shall perform austerity; bring Caitra here.
तस्मान्निवर्त्त्य ममता मनुमेने च तं प्रति
Therefore, turning away from attachment, he considered him accordingly.
सन्मान्य ब्राह्मणं येन पुत्रबुद्ध्या स पालितः
He, by whom the brāhmaṇa was honored and cared for as a son, was protected.
इंद्रेश्वरस्य देवस्य पश्चिमे लिंगमुत्तमम्
The supreme liṅga of the god Indreśvara is in the west.
तपस्यंतं ततस्तं तु देवः प्राह शुचिस्मिते
Then, as he was practicing austerity, the god spoke to him, O pure-smiled one.
मनुना भवता भाव्यं षष्ठेन व्रज तत्कुरु
You must act according to the sixth Manu; go and do that.
इत्युक्तो देवदेवेन तथेत्याह महामतिः
Thus addressed by the Lord of gods, the wise one replied, 'So be it.'
पुत्रानुत्पादयामास लिंगस्यास्य समर्चनात्
By worshipping this liṅga, he brought forth sons.
आनंदेन यतः प्राप्ता सिद्धिर्देवि सुदुर्ल्लभा 5.2.33.
O goddess, because of this, he attained a most difficult accomplishment, with joy.
ये पश्यंति विशालाक्षि आनंदेश्वरमीश्वरम्
Those who see Ānandeśvara, the Lord, O wide-eyed one,
येषां क्षीणं नृणां पापं कोटिजन्मशतोद्भवम्
for those people, the sins accumulated over a hundred million births are destroyed.
तदैव पुरुषो मुक्तो जन्ममृत्युजरादिभिः
At that very moment, a man is freed from birth, death, old age, and the rest.
मयोक्तं मुक्तिदं नृणामानन्देश्वरदर्शनम् अत्र देवैर्विशालाक्षि पूजितं लिंगमुत्तमम्
I have declared that the sight of Ānandeśvara grants liberation to people; here, O wide-eyed goddess, the supreme liṅga is worshipped by the gods.
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
O goddess, this power of his, which destroys sin, has been described to you.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By merely seeing him, one is freed from all sins.
वितस्तायास्तटे रम्ये ब्राह्मणो निवसन्पुरा
Once, on the beautiful bank of the Vitastā, there lived a brāhmaṇa.
ज्ञातिभिश्च परित्यक्तो दुष्टया भार्यया तथा
He was abandoned by his relatives and also by his wicked wife.
तेनाहं सुतकामेन तोषितो गिरिगह्वरे
Desiring a son, he pleased me in a mountain cave.
तस्य पुत्रः समुत्पन्नः कंथामध्यादयो निजः
A son was born to him, who took up his own garment from the neck.
स च लब्धः प्रसादेन मदीयेन वरानने
And he was obtained by my favor, O beautiful-faced one.
अथ षष्ठे गते वर्षे मौंजीबंधमचिंतयत् नमस्कृत्य ऋषीन्सर्वान्पूजयामास भक्तितः
Then, when the sixth year had passed, he thought of the sacred thread ceremony; having bowed to all the sages, he worshipped them with devotion.
फलैर्वित्तानुसारेण मौंजी तस्याप्यबंधत
According to his means, he performed the sacred thread ceremony for him with fruits.
दीयतामाशिषो ह्यस्मै पुत्राय मुनिसत्तमाः
O best of sages, let blessings be given to this son.
तूष्णींभूयः स्थिताः सर्वे तच्छ्रुत्वा नोत्तरं ददुः ध्यानेन चिंतयामास नूनमल्पायुषं सुतम् ।। 5.2.34.
Hearing this, all remained silent and gave no answer; by meditation, he thought, 'Surely my son has little lifespan.'
इति ज्ञात्वा तु संमोहमगमत्सहसा मुनिः
Realizing this, the sage suddenly fell into confusion.
रुद्रेण च वरो दत्तः प्रसन्नेन पुरा मम
Long ago, Rudra, being pleased, granted me a boon.
मत्तुल्यवीर्यः पुत्रस्ते कंथामध्याद्भ विष्यति
Your son, equal to me in strength, will emerge from the center of the Kaṃthā.
पितरं दुःखितं दृष्ट्वा तूष्णींभूतो मुनिस्तदा
Seeing his father distressed, the sage then became silent.
त्यजत भयमिदानीं यन्ममार्थे विषण्णा विनिहतनिजयत्नं प्रेतराजं करोमि
Abandon your fear now; for your sake, though you are sorrowful and your efforts have failed, I will subdue Yama, the lord of the dead.
