तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वाम देवो महामुनिः
Hearing those words of his, the great sage Vāmadeva
महाकालवनं गच्छ महाराज ममाज्ञया
Go to the great Kāla forest, O king, by my command.
पापसंघप्रहर्त्ता च सर्ववेदेषु पठ्यते
The destroyer of multitudes of sins is spoken of in all the Vedas.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वामदेवस्य पार्थिवः
Hearing those words of Vāmadeva, the king
तत्र दृष्ट्वा जगद्वंद्यं देवदेवं जटेश्वरम्
There, seeing the lord of the matted locks, the god of gods, worshipped by the world,
शिवाय ते नमो नित्यं विश्वकाय नमोनमः
Salutations always to Śiva, to the universal form, again and again.
नमो जटाय रामाय माययाक्रांतकारिणे 5.2.28.
Salutations to the one with matted hair, to Rāma, to the doer who is seized by Māyā.
नमो भोगाय धूम्राय नमोऽस्तु गगनात्मने
Salutations to the one who enjoys, to the smoky one, salutations to the one whose essence is the sky.
नमो महांधकारार्क नमस्ते शत्रुघातिने नमः कनकवर्णाय नमो मोहितमोहिने
Salutations to the great darkness-sun, salutations to the destroyer of enemies; salutations to the golden-hued one, salutations to the bewilderer of the bewildered.
नमः सुरूपाय सुरार्चिताय नमो विरूपाय प्रकृतेः पराय
Salutations to the beautiful one, worshipped by the gods; salutations to the deformed one, to the one beyond nature.
इति स्तुतस्तदा देवि महादेवो महेश्वरः
Thus praised at that time, O goddess, was the great god Maheśvara.
भस्मचर्चितसर्वांगो भोगिभोगांगदोज्वलः
His whole body was smeared with ashes, radiant with the gift of enjoyment from the serpent.
मुक्तालतानिभाभिस्तु जटाभिर्भूषितो विभुः
The lord was adorned with matted locks shining like strings of pearls.
भोगींद्रफणबद्धाभिः सितपीतादिभिस्तथा
Bound with the hoods of the king of serpents, white and yellow and others likewise.
राजानं प्रत्युवाचेदं वचनं पर्वतात्मजे
The daughter of the mountain spoke these words to the king.
जटीभूतं च ते पापं गतं मद्दर्शनेन वै
The sin that had become matted in you has departed through seeing me.
इत्युक्तो देवदेवेन वीरधन्वा महीपतिः 5.2.28.
Thus addressed by the Lord of gods, the king Vīradhanvan—
कामगेन विमानेन स्तूयमानो गणैः प्रिये
Praised by the hosts, O beloved, he ascended a celestial chariot created by desire.
लिंगश्चातः समाख्यातो नाम्ना देवो जटेश्वरः तेषां पापं जटीभूतं तत्क्षणादेव नश्यति
Therefore, the liṅga is known by the name Jaṭeśvara; their sin, having become matted, is destroyed instantly.
येऽर्चयंति सदा देवि देवदेवं जटेश्वरम्
Those who always worship the god of gods, Jaṭeśvara, O goddess—
येप्यन्ये देवगन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षस मानवाः
And those others—gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and men—
तेऽपि कामानवाप्स्यन्ति यांश्च कांश्च सुदुर्लभान्
They too will obtain whatever rare desires they wish for.
निःसपत्नत्वमतुलं यच्चान्यत्तदवाप्नुयात् तेपि पापविनिर्मुक्ता भविष्यंति गत ज्वराः
They will gain unrivaled freedom from enemies and whatever else they may seek; they too will become free from sin and suffering.
जटेश्वरं प्रपश्यंति भक्त्या ये च दिनेदिने
Those who behold Jaṭeśvara with devotion day by day—
व्याधितो व्याधिना मुक्तो दुःखी दुःखात्प्रमुच्यते
The diseased are freed from disease, the afflicted are released from suffering.
जटेश्वरस्य माहात्म्यं ये पठिष्यंति पार्वति
Those who recite the greatness of Jaṭeśvara, O Pārvatī—
ते सर्वकामानाप्स्यंति गतिमंते च मत्पुरे 5.2.28.
They attain all desires and, at the end, reach my abode.
गुर्विणी लभते पुत्रमरोगं श्रुतिभूषणम्
A pregnant woman obtains a healthy son, adorned with the ornament of the Vedas.
मांगल्यमिदमायुष्यं धर्मकामाश्रयं महत्
This is auspicious, life-giving, and a great support for righteousness and desire.
दुर्भुक्तं दुर्जनस्पर्शं यच्चाल्पायुःकरं भवेत्
Whatever brings poor food, contact with wicked people, or causes short life—
