स चायं पीडितो देव शशांकेन नवेन वै वृत्तांतं कथयामास ब्रह्माग्रे च पुनःपुन.
And this one, O god, is afflicted by the new moon; he recounted the story again and again before Brahma.
ब्रह्मापि पूर्वचंद्रार्थे विष्णुं लोकनमस्कृतम्
And Brahma, for the sake of the former moon, to Vishnu, revered by the worlds—
नमः कृष्ण नमो विष्णो नमो जिष्णो नमोनमः 5.2.26.
Salutations to Krishna, salutations to Vishnu, salutations to the victorious one, repeated salutations.
जयस्व गोविंद महानुभाव जयस्व विश्णो जय पद्मनाभ
Victory to you, Govinda, of great power! Victory to you, Vishnu! Victory to you, Padmanabha!
एवं स्तुतस्तदा देवि ब्रह्मणा लोककारिणा
Thus, at that time, the goddess was praised by Brahmā, the creator of the worlds.
गच्छ सोम ममादेशान्महाकालवनोत्तमे तमाराधय यत्नेन स ते देहं प्रदास्यति
Go, Soma, at my command, to the most excellent Mahākāla forest; worship him there with effort—he will grant you a body.
इत्युक्तो वासुदेवेन ब्रह्मणा च पुनः पुनः लिंगं दृष्ट्वा च तुष्टाव स्तोत्रेणानेन सुव्रते
Thus addressed repeatedly by Vāsudeva and also by Brahmā, the virtuous one, seeing the liṅga, praised it with this hymn.
चंद्र उवाच नमो देवाधिदेवाय त्रिनेत्राय महात्मने
Candra said: Salutations to the god of gods, the three-eyed, the great-souled one.
भूतवेतालजुष्टाय महादेवाय शूलिने
To the great god, the bearer of the trident, who is attended by spirits and goblins.
पूष्णो दंतविनाशाय तथांधकविनाशिने
To the destroyer of Pūṣan’s teeth, and likewise the slayer of Andhaka.
विकरालोर्द्ध्वकेशाय भैरवाय नमोनमः
To the wild one with hair standing upwards, to Bhairava—salutations, salutations!
तथा दारुवनध्वंसकारिणे तिग्मशूलिने
Also to the one who destroyed the Daru forest, who wields a sharp trident.
प्रचंडदंडहस्ताय वडवाग्निमुखाय च 5.2.26.
To the one holding a fierce staff, whose mouth is like the submarine fire.
दक्षयज्ञविनाशाय जगद्भयकराय च कपर्दिने करालाय सर्वदेवाय ते नमः
To the destroyer of Dakṣa’s sacrifice, the one who causes fear in the world, the matted-haired, the fierce, salutations to you, lord of all gods.
एवं स्तुतस्तदा देवि चंद्रेणांतर्हितेन च
Thus, at that time, O goddess, Candra, though invisible, praised him.
स्तोत्रेणानेन तुष्टोऽस्मि ब्रूहि सोम किमिच्छसि
Pleased with this hymn, he said: Speak, Soma, what do you desire?
कांत्या दीप्त्या तथा मूर्त्या तथा रूपेण च प्रभो
By your grace, O Lord, I wish for brilliance, radiance, form, and beauty.
स्वपदं कर्त्तुमिच्छामि त्वत्प्रसादान्महेश्वर
By your favor, O great Lord, I wish to regain my own state.
द्विजराजेन तत्प्राप्तं लिंगस्यास्य प्रसादतः
That was obtained by the king of the twice-born, through the grace of this liṅga.
तेन सोमेश्वरोनाम विख्यातो भुवनत्रये
Therefore, in the three worlds, it is renowned as Someśvara.
कृत पुण्या नरा मर्त्यास्ते यांति परमं पदम्
Men who have performed meritorious deeds attain the supreme state.
विमुक्तो जन्मदुःखाद्यैर्लीयते मयि मानवः
Freed from the sufferings of birth and so forth, a person merges in me.
यैश्च सोमेश्वरो देवो न दृष्टो न च पूजितः 5.2.26.
And those by whom the god Someśvara was neither seen nor worshipped,
एकः सोमेश्वरः पूज्यः कुष्ठरोगविनाशनः
Someśvara alone is to be worshipped, the destroyer of leprosy.
आधारः सर्वलोकानां येन सोमेश्वरो ऽर्चितः मुक्तो भोगी निरातंको मम लोके वसेच्चिरम्
He is the foundation of all worlds; by whom Someśvara is worshipped, that person, freed, enjoying, fearless, dwells long in my realm.
कांचनैः कुसुमैर्देवि लिंगं सोमेश्वरं प्रिये
With golden flowers, O goddess, the Someśvara liṅga, O beloved,
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
This, O goddess, I have told you—the power that destroys sin.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण स्वप्नेपि नरकः कुतः
By merely seeing him—even in a dream—how could hell arise?
पुरा कलियुगे देवि कल्पे वाराहसंज्ञके
Once, O goddess, in the Kali age, in the era called Vārāha,
निर्मर्यादा निराधारा निरौका नास्तिका जनाः
People arose who were without boundaries, without foundation, without homes, and atheistic.
