अनेकत्वं विहायैतज्जलदेहं सनातनम्
Abandoning his manifold form, he left behind that eternal body of water.
एवमंतर्हितः सोमो गतो वै दक्षशापतः वैराजं ब्रह्मसदनं ब्रह्माणं समुपस्थिताः
Thus, hidden by Daksha's curse, Soma went to the abode of Brahma, the lord of creation, accompanied by the radiant ones.
तस्याग्रे कथयामासुर्नमस्कृत्य पुनःपुनः 5.2.26.
In his presence, they spoke repeatedly, offering their salutations.
स्रष्टा च हव्यकव्यानां पाहि नः शरणागतान्
O Creator, lord of offerings to gods and ancestors, protect us who have sought your refuge.
आश्वासयामास सुरान्सुश्लिष्टैर्वचनांबुभिः
He comforted the gods with gentle and affectionate words.
शापांतं भगवान्देवो विष्णुरेव करिष्यति शरण्यं शरणं विष्णुमुपतस्थुर्गतव्यथाः
The blessed Lord Vishnu alone will bring an end to the curse; free from distress, they approached Vishnu, the refuge of all.
ब्रह्मणा सहिता देवि स्तुतिं चक्रुः समाहिताः नमस्तेऽस्तु हृषीकेश महापुरुषपूर्वज
Together with Brahma, O goddess, they offered praise with concentrated minds: 'Salutations to you, Hrishikesha, ancestor of the great person.'
नारायण जगन्नाथ देवास्त्वां शरणं गताः
O Narayana, Lord of the universe, the gods have sought refuge in you.
त्वं हि नः परमो देवो ब्रह्मादीनां सुरोत्तम
Truly, you are our supreme god, the highest among the gods beginning with Brahma.
विना सोमेन चौषध्यो नष्टा देव महीतले
Without Soma, O god, the herbs on earth have perished.
भयं त्यजध्वममरा अभयं वो ददाम्यहम्
Abandon fear, O immortals; I grant you freedom from fear.
एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान्विसृज्य त्रिदशेश्वरान्
Having thus spoken, the blessed Lord dismissed the lords of the gods.
यदा स्मृतो न चाभ्येति तदा क्रुद्धो जनार्दनः 5.2.26.
When remembered but not approached, then Janardana becomes angry.
देवैरसुरसंघैश्च मथ्यतां कलशोदधिः
Let the gods and the hosts of asuras churn the ocean with the vessel.
अमृतं तत्र लप्स्यध्वं रत्नानि विविधानि च
There you will obtain ambrosia and various kinds of jewels.
मंथानं मंदरं कृत्वा नेत्रं कृत्वा च वासुकिम्
Using Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki as the rope, perform the churning.
सोमार्थे च पुरा देवि तथैवासुरदानवाः
O Goddess, formerly, for the sake of Soma, likewise the Asuras and Danavas—
विबुधाः सहिताः सर्वे यतः पुच्छं ततः स्थिताः
All the gods together stood at the tail for that reason.
शिरस्युद्यम्य नाग स्य पुनः पुनरवाक्षिपत्
Raising the serpent's head, again and again they cast it downward.
तत्र नानाजलचरा विनिष्पिष्टा महाद्रिणा
There, various aquatic creatures were crushed by the great mountain.
तस्मिंस्तु मथिते देवि प्रयत्नात्केशवस्य च
As that was being churned, O Goddess, with great effort by Keshava—
तमेव देवा मनुजाः पितरश्च यशस्विनि
That very thing was seen to arise by the gods, men, and ancestors, O illustrious one.
समुत्पन्नमथो दृष्ट्वा भगवान्प्राह केशवः 5.2.26.
Then, seeing it manifest, the Blessed Lord Keshava spoke.
इत्युक्तो वासुदेवेन प्रजाः पालयितुं शशी
Thus addressed by Vasudeva, the Moon was to protect the beings.
तस्याग्रे नारदः सर्वं कथयामास सत्वरम्
Before him, Narada quickly recounted everything.
पीडितो दक्षशापेन सोमोऽप्यंतर्हितस्तदा
Oppressed by Daksha's curse, Soma then disappeared.
तत्र गत्वा यथाशापं कथयामास गद्गदः
Going there, as cursed, he spoke falteringly.
अयं मे प्रथमः पुत्रः पीडितः शशिना भृशम्
This is my first son, greatly afflicted by the Moon.
विष्णुना च बलं दत्तमस्मै चंद्रमसे दृढम्
And by Vishnu, strength was firmly given to this Chandra.
तं दृष्ट्वा मधुहंतारं ब्रह्मा विष्णुमुवाच ह
Seeing the slayer of Madhu, Brahma spoke to Vishnu.
