वरं वरय विप्रेन्द्र वरदोऽहं तवाग्रतः
Choose a boon, O foremost of Brahmins; I stand before you as the grantor of boons.
त्वद्भक्तिमचलामेकां मम देहि जगत्पते
O Lord of the universe, grant me unwavering and exclusive devotion to you.
श्रीभगवानुवाच भक्तिरस्त्वचला मे वै वैष्णवी मुक्तिदायिनी
The Blessed Lord said: You indeed possess unwavering devotion to me, the Vaishnavi devotion that bestows liberation.
इदं स्थानं महाभाग त्वन्नाम्ना ख्यातिमेष्यति
O highly fortunate one, this place will become renowned by your name.
जलं प्रकटयामास गांगं पातालमंडलात्
He revealed the water of the Ganga from the realm of the netherworld.
जलेन तेन भगवान्पवित्रेण दयांबुधिः
With that pure water, the Lord, ocean of compassion, performed ablutions.
चक्रतीर्थमिति ख्यातं ततः प्रभृति तद्द्विज
From that time onward, O twice-born, it became known as Cakra-tirtha.
तत्र स्नानेन दानेन विष्णुलोकं व्रजेन्नरः
By bathing and giving gifts there, a man attains the world of Vishnu.
ततः स भगवान्भूयो विष्णुशर्माणमच्युतः
Then the Blessed Lord again addressed Vishnusharman.
विष्णुहरीति विख्याता भक्तानां मुक्तिदायिनी ।।2.8.1.
Vishnuhari, renowned as the bestower of liberation to devotees, is established there.
स्वनामपूर्विकां मूर्तिं स्थापयामास चक्रिणः
He installed an image bearing his own name, that of the Discus-wielder.
ततः प्रभति विप्रेश शंखचक्रगदाधरः
From that time onward, O lord of Brahmins, the bearer of conch, discus, and mace—
कार्तिके शुक्लपक्षस्य प्रारभ्य दशमी तिथिम्
Beginning from the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika—
चक्रतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By bathing at Cakra-tirtha, a man is freed from all sins.
पितॄनुद्दिश्य यस्तत्र पिंडान्निर्वापयिष्यति
He who, for the sake of his ancestors, offers rice-balls there—
चक्रतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा विष्णुहरिं विभुम्
Having bathed at Cakra-tirtha and seen Vishnuhari, the Lord—
स्वशक्त्या तत्र दानानि दत्त्वा निष्कल्मषो नरः
By giving gifts there according to his ability, a man becomes free from all blemish.
अन्यदापि नरस्तत्र चक्रतीथे जितेंद्रियः
At any other time as well, a man who has conquered his senses at Cakra-tirtha—
इति सकलगुणाब्धिर्ध्येयमूर्तिश्चिदात्मा हरिरिह परमूर्त्या तस्थिवान्मुक्तिहेतोः
Thus, Hari, the ocean of all virtues, the contemplative form, the consciousness-self, stood here in the supreme form for the sake of liberation.
विभोर्विष्णुहरेश्चापि पुनराह द्विजोत्तमाः
Again, O best of twice-born, Vishnu, the Lord Hari, spoke.
अगस्त्य उवाच पुरा ब्रह्मा जगत्स्रष्टा विज्ञाय हरिमच्युतम्
Agastya said: Long ago, Brahma, the creator of the world, having recognized Hari, the infallible one—
आगत्य कृतवांस्तत्र यात्रां ब्रह्मा यथाविधि
Having arrived there, Brahma performed the pilgrimage according to the prescribed manner.
ततः स कृतवांस्तत्र ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः
Then, Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, performed the rites there.
विस्तीर्णजलकल्लोलकलितं कलुषापहम्
It was adorned with expansive waves of water, removing impurity.
हंससारसचक्राह्व विहंगममनोहरम्
Beautiful with birds called hamsa and sarasa, and known as cakra, delightful to behold.
तत्र कुण्डे सुराः सर्वे स्नाताः शुद्धिसमन्विताः
There, in the pond, all the gods bathed, endowed with purity.
तदाश्चर्य्यं महद्दृष्ट्वा ते सर्वे सहसा सुराः
Then, seeing a great wonder, all the gods were suddenly amazed.
अस्य कुण्डस्य सकलं खातस्य विमलत्विषः
The entire pond, excavated, shone with pure brilliance.
अत्र स्नानेन सर्वेषामस्माकं विगतं रजः सर्वे वयं सुरश्रेष्ठ कृपया त्वमतो वद ।। 2.8.2.
By bathing here, all our impurity is gone; O best of gods, by your grace, tell us further.
कुण्डस्यैतस्य माहात्म्यं नानाफलसमन्वितम्
The greatness of this pond is endowed with various fruits.
