मन्यते तावदात्मानमन्येभ्यो रूपवत्तमम्
He considers himself to be the most beautiful among others.
तदेतरं विजानाति ह्यात्मानं नेतरं जनम्
He recognizes himself as distinct, not the other people.
स नास्तिकोप्युद्विजते जनः किं पुनरास्तिकः
Even a non-believer is not disturbed; how much less so a believer.
अनात्मज्ञासि गिरिजे मृडे पंडितमानिनि
O daughter of the mountain, you do not know the self, though you think yourself wise, O Mṛḍā.
काठिन्यं कष्टमभ्येति धातुभ्यो बहुघातिता
Hardness and suffering arise from the elements, having been struck many times.
इत्युक्ताऽसि मया देवि पुनः प्रोक्तं त्वया वचः
Thus, O goddess, you have been addressed by me; again, you have spoken words.
व्यालेभ्योऽनेकजिह्वत्वं भस्मतः स्नेहवर्जनम्
From serpents comes the possession of many tongues; from ashes, the absence of affection.
श्मशानवासाद्भीरुत्वं नग्नत्वं च न लज्जया
From dwelling in the cremation ground comes fearfulness, and nakedness not due to shame.
एवं तदाभवद्रौद्रः कलहो भयकृच्छुभे 5.2.
Thus, at that time, a fierce quarrel arose, causing fear and agitation.
भीताश्च देवगंधर्वा यक्षगंधर्वराक्षसाः
The gods, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Rakshasas were afraid.
लिंगमध्यात्समुत्पन्ना वाणी सुखकरी शुभा
From the midst of the liṅga arose a voice, auspicious and bringing happiness.
नामास्य चक्रुर्देवेशास्तदा कलकलेश्वरम्
The lords of the gods then named him 'Kalakala-īśvara.'
यस्तमर्चयते भक्त्या देवं कलकलेश्वरम् विप्रं कुर्युर्वरारोहे कलहो न भवेद्गृहे
Whoever worships the god Kalakaleshvara with devotion, O beautiful one, the brahmins will bless; discord will not arise in his household.
सुशीला गृहिणी तस्य सुरूपा सुभगा प्रिये
His wife will be virtuous, attractive, and fortunate, O beloved.
ये पश्यंति चतुर्द्दश्यां देवं कलकलेश्वरम्
Those who behold the god Kalakaleshvara on the fourteenth day,
न च शत्रुभयं तेषां जायते गिरिपुत्रके
For them, O daughter of the mountain, fear of enemies does not arise.
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
This, O Devi, I have told you—the power that destroys sin.
निर्माल्यलंघनाप्तपापान्मुच्यते यस्य दर्शनात
By seeing him, one is freed from the sins incurred by crossing over discarded offerings.
तस्य प्रभावं सुभगं कथयाम्यथ विस्तरात्
Now I shall tell you in detail, O fortunate one, his splendid power.
पुरा देवर्षिगंधर्वाश्चारणा गुह्यकास्तथा
Once, the divine sages, Gandharvas, Charanas, and Guhyakas,
एतस्मिन्नंतरे शक्रो देवर्षिं नारदं मुनिम्
Meanwhile, Indra saw the sage Narada,
दृष्ट्वा विनयसंपन्नं ब्रह्मचर्यपरायणम्
Seeing him endowed with humility and devoted to celibacy,
त्वया दृष्टमिदं सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं भूर्भुवादिकम्
You have seen all this—the three worlds: earth, atmosphere, and heaven.
त्वत्तुल्यो नास्ति लोकेऽस्मिन्मु क्त्वैकं परमेष्ठिनम्
There is no one equal to you in this world, having spoken thus to the supreme lord.
योगेन तपसा भक्त्या यत्त्वया परितोषितः
By yoga, austerity, and devotion, you have pleased him.
अतोऽहं प्रष्टुमिच्छामि कथ्यतां मम निश्चयम्
Therefore, I wish to ask; let my resolve be told to me.
एवं श्रुत्वा तदा ध्यात्वा चिंतयामास नारदः 5.2.19.
Having heard thus, Narada meditated and reflected.
देवराज स्मृतं पुण्यं क्षेत्रराजमनुत्तमम्
O king of the gods, the sacred, supreme field is remembered.
तस्माद्दशगुणं क्षेत्रं महाकालस्य कथ्यते
Therefore, the field of Mahakala is said to be ten times greater.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा सहस्राक्षो वर्णयित्वा च तं मुनिम्
Having heard this, the thousand-eyed one described it to the sage.
