बाहवस्ते दिशः सर्वाः कुक्षिश्चैव महार्णवः 5.2.16.
Your arms are all the directions, and your belly is indeed the great ocean.
इंद्रसोमाग्निवरुणा देवासुरमहोरगाः
Indra, Soma, Agni, Varuṇa, the gods, the asuras, and the great serpents—
त्वया व्याप्तानि भूतानि सर्वाणि भुवनेश्वर
All beings are pervaded by you, O Lord of the worlds.
भयानामपनेतासि त्वमेकः शत्रुसूदनः
You alone are the remover of fears, the destroyer of enemies.
न च विक्रमणैर्देव निर्वाणमगमत्परम्
And, O god, not even through their efforts did they attain the supreme liberation.
आराधयित्वा सर्वे ते नमस्यंति च सर्वशः
Having worshipped you, all of them bow to you in every way.
धूमावृता महा ज्वाला यया दग्धः स दानवः
Enveloped in smoke, a great flame by which that demon was burned.
स्वाधिकारांश्च संप्रापुर्लिंगस्यास्य प्रभावतः
They attained their own domains through the power of this liṅga.
ऐश्वर्यशीलमस्यास्तीत्यस्माकं च विनिश्चितम्
It is our firm conviction that sovereignty is the nature of this one.
ईशानेश्वरसंज्ञं तु ये समाराधयंति च
Those who worship the one called Īśāna and Īśvara—
पूज्यमानः सदा देवैर्गंधर्वाप्सरसांगणैः 5.2.16.
Ever worshipped by the gods, and by hosts of gandharvas and apsarases.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राः स्त्रियः कुमारिकाः
Brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras, women, and maidens—
यः करोति नरः सम्यग्दर्शनं नियमस्थितः
Whoever, established in discipline, properly performs the viewing—
सर्वदा सर्वकार्येषु ते समर्था यशस्विनि
You are always capable in all actions, O illustrious one.
एवं ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
Thus, O goddess, your power, destroyer of sin, has been described to you.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण लोकोऽभीष्टानवाप्नुयात्
By whose mere sight the world attains its desired objects—
नंदनाख्ये वने देवि सर्वकामसमन्विते
In the forest called Nandana, O goddess, endowed with all enjoyments—
शुककोकिलचक्राह्वचकोरकुररावृते
Filled with parrots, cuckoos, chakoras, and kuraras—
तत्रोपविष्टो वृत्रारिः सुरज्येष्ठश्च सेवितः
There, the enemy of Vṛtra, honored by the foremost of the gods, was seated.
ततोन्यचित्ता संजाता किंचित्स्मृत्वा प्रमादतः
Then, her mind wandered, and she became distracted, recalling something out of carelessness.
चुकोप च सुरश्रेष्ठस्तस्याः शापं ददौ किल तस्मात्तु मानुषे लोके गच्छ त्वं निष्प्रभा सती
The best of the gods became angry and indeed pronounced a curse upon her: 'Therefore, go to the world of humans, deprived of your radiance.'
अथेंद्रकोपसंक्षोभात्पतिता भुवि साप्सराः
Then, shaken by Indra’s wrath, that apsaras fell to earth.
करुणं विलपंती च किं मया दुष्कृतं कृतम्
Lamenting pitifully, she cried, 'What wrong have I committed?''
अथाप्सरोगणः सर्वः सखीगण समन्वितः तस्याः शोकाग्निदाहेन संतप्तोऽप्सरसां गणः
Then, the entire host of apsarases, along with her companions, was tormented by the fire of grief for her.
सुसुप्ता पद्मिनी साभ्रे यथा नैव विराजते 5.2.17.
Just as a lotus in a cloudy sky does not shine while asleep, so too did she not appear radiant.
सखीगणैः परिवृता रंभा दृष्टा वरानने
Surrounded by her circle of friends, Rambhā was seen, her face beautiful as the moon.
कस्मादप्सरसः सद्यो दृश्यंते शोकविह्वलाः
Why do the apsarases suddenly appear overwhelmed by sorrow?
पप्रच्छ च समागत्य कस्मादप्सरसो वराः
Coming together, she asked, 'Why are the best of the apsarases like this?''
वृत्तांतं कथयामासुस्ताश्च तस्मै पुरातनम्
They recounted to her that ancient story.
उपायं कथयामास हितं तासां प्रयत्नतः
With great care, he explained to them a beneficial means.
