Having said this, he arrived where I was engaged in austerities.
Then Kāma saw me, my matted locks piled high like a mountain peak.
He beheld me seated upright, my gaze fixed at the tip of my nose.
Through the opening of my hand, Madana entered into my heart.
The divine contemplation of samādhi, manifest as the direct perception of the goal,
I became truly mad, overtaken by the distortion born of Madana.
I saw within my own heart Manmatha, the bringer of what is unwholesome.
If he enters a yogin, he may fall into a non-human birth.
Meanwhile, Madana too was greatly tormented.
Then, at the root of a mango tree, he became a friend of the spring.
And that arrow, by its play, reached my own heart.
By the spark from my eye, the denizens of heaven cried out.
When Kāma was thus burned, Rati became absorbed in grief.
"Alas, lord! Alas, my very life! Alas, master, why do you abandon me?"
As she lamented in this way, a bodiless voice spoke, by the grace of the God of gods, and also of Śiva.
Then, O goddess, at that very moment, I was entreated, dear one.
By this, O Lord, creation on earth has been destroyed.
Then I spoke to that Rati, who was speaking in distress, O goddess.
Therefore, by my favor, I shall restore life to her body, though it was burned.
Thus, he will henceforth move among beings as Ananga, the bodiless one.
Out of compassion for the gods, I have made him Ananga.
There, even Ananga, filled with devotion, went.
By the satisfied liṅga, it was declared: 'Kāma, you shall obtain your desire.'
He will obtain birth in the womb of Rukmiṇī, through union with Kṛṣṇa.
Because you, Ananga, have pleased me in your mind,
Those who see you, Kandarpa, endowed with supreme devotion,
They will become long-lived, and their appearance will be beautiful.
They will possess sovereignty, supreme enjoyments, and women adorned with divine qualities.
Those who see me with devotion on the thirteenth day of the bright half of Caitra,
Yakṣas, lords of the gaṇas, siddhas, and those served by accomplished gandharvas—
