तथा रक्ष सुरश्रेष्ठ भयं नः समुपस्थितम्
So now, O best of gods, protect us; great fear has come upon us.
तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शंखचक्रगदाधरः 5.2.12.१
Hearing their words, he who holds the conch, discus, and mace—
ते निष्क्रम्य ततो रात्रौ निघ्नंति द्विजसत्तमान्
They went out at night and began to slay the best of the twice-born.
अथ स्वर्गं गताः कांते जितः शक्रो मरुत्पतिः
Then, O beloved, Indra, lord of the Maruts, was defeated and went to heaven.
गत्वाथ पश्चिमामाशां जलराजो विनिर्जितः
Then, having gone to the western direction, the lord of waters was conquered.
ततस्ते व्याकुला जाता विष्णुं शरणमागताः
Then, distressed, they all sought refuge with Vishnu.
महाकालवनं गत्वा देवा भक्त्या समाहिताः
The gods, with devotion and concentration, went to the great Kāla forest.
भवतां भविता सिद्धिस्तत्र तस्य प्रसादतः
Through his grace, success will come to you there.
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा कृष्णस्यामिततेजसः
Hearing these words of Krishna, whose power is immeasurable,
तावत्तत्रैव संरुद्धा दैत्यैः शस्त्रधरैस्तदा
at that very moment, they were surrounded there by Daityas armed with weapons.
कथयामासुरत्युग्रं यथा रुद्धं जगत्त्रयम्
They began to recount, with great intensity, how the three worlds had been restrained.
यूयं व्रतधरा भूत्वा कपालैश्च विभूषिताः 5.2.12.
You, having observed vows and adorned with skulls,
भस्मभूषितसर्वांगाः क्षुद्रघंटाविराजिताः गच्छध्वं ब्रह्मणा सार्द्धं पादबद्धैश्च नूपुरैः
your entire bodies smeared with ashes, resplendent with small bells, go together with Brahma, with anklets fastened on your feet.
अथ ते लोकपालाश्च श्रुत्वा कृष्णस्य भाषितम्
Then those guardians of the worlds, having heard Krishna’s speech,
तत्र दृष्टं महल्लिंगं तेजसां राशिमद्भुतम्
there saw the great liṅga, a wondrous mass of radiance.
ततस्तु तस्य लिंगस्य वह्निज्वाला विनिःसृता
Then from that liṅga, a flame of fire emerged.
ज्ञात्वा लिंगस्य माहात्म्यं नाम चक्रुः समाहिताः
Recognizing the greatness of the liṅga, they gave it a name with focused minds.
लोकपालेश्वरोनाम ख्यातिं यास्यति भूतले स्वस्वस्थानं गता दिव्यं यथापूर्वं मुदान्विताः
The name Lokapāleśvara will become renowned on earth; having returned to their own divine abodes as before, they were filled with joy.
ये पश्यंति नरा देवि लोकपालेश्वरं शिवम्
O Goddess, those men who behold Lokapāleśvara Śiva,
न दारिद्र्यं न च व्याधिर्नाकालमरणं तथा
will not suffer poverty, nor disease, nor untimely death.
यो यमुद्दिश्य वै कामं दर्शनं तु करिष्यति
Whoever, with a particular desire, seeks a vision of him,
अश्वमेधस्य यज्ञस्य सम्यगिष्टस्य यत्फलम् 5.2.12.
the fruit of a properly performed Aśvamedha sacrifice,
प्रसंगेनापि यः पश्येल्लोकपालेश्वरं शिवम्
even one who happens to see Lokapāleśvara Śiva,
संक्रांतौ सोमवारे च चतुर्दश्यां विशेषतः
especially during the transit, on a Monday, or on the fourteenth day,
ते दुर्द्धर्षा भवंतीह शत्रूणां संगरे तथा
they become invincible here in battle against enemies,
क्रमेण वारुणं लोकं धनदस्य यथासुखम्
and in due course, they attain the world of Varuṇa or the realm of Kubera, as they desire.
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
O Goddess, this power of yours, which destroys sin, has been described to you.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सौभाग्यं जायते शुभम्
By merely seeing him, auspicious good fortune arises.
ब्रह्मणो ध्यायमानस्य प्रजाकामस्य पार्वति अलंकारावृतः कांतो दिव्यमंडनमंडितः
While Brahmā was meditating, desiring offspring, there appeared a handsome one, adorned with ornaments, decorated with divine jewels.
तं दृष्ट्वा परमं दिव्यं कांतं सौभाग्यशोभितम्
Seeing him—supremely divine, charming, and radiant with good fortune—
