एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवा कृतास्तेन पराङ्मुखाः
Meanwhile, the gods, having been defeated by him, turned away.
ततः कोपसमाविष्टो विष्णुर्दृष्ट्वा दिवालयान्
Then Viṣṇu, filled with anger, saw the celestial abodes.
तदापतत्तु वेगेन चक्रं विष्णोः सुदर्शनम्
At that moment, Viṣṇu's Sudarśana discus rushed forth with great speed.
तस्मिंश्चक्रे तदा ग्रस्ते ह्यमोघे दैत्यसूदने
When that unfailing discus, the slayer of demons, was seized,
गृहीत्वा पादयोर्भूमौ निजघानातिदूरतः
He was grasped by the feet and struck forcefully to the ground at a great distance.
रुधिरोद्गारसंयुक्तं वक्त्रात्तच्च विनिर्गतम् न तु पंचत्वमापन्नो गदया ताडितोऽपि सः ।। 5.2.9.
Blood mixed with phlegm issued from his mouth, yet, though struck with the mace, he did not die.
ततस्तु प्रमथाः सर्वे विष्णुवीर्यबलार्द्दिताः
Then all the Pramathas, overpowered by Viṣṇu's strength and might,
मां दृष्ट्वा शूलहस्तं तु विष्णुश्चांतरधीयत
Seeing me holding the trident, Viṣṇu disappeared.
मत्तस्त्रासपरीतात्मा ततश्चादर्शनं गतः
Terrified by me, his mind seized by fear, he became invisible.
मया निरूपितो देवि स्वर्गद्वारे गणस्तदा
O goddess, by me the host was stationed then at the gate of heaven.
द्वारावरोधः कर्त्तव्यो यत्नतः शासनान्मम
A blockade of the gate must be made with care, by my command.
उद्वसश्च ततो जातः स्वर्गो देवा विनिर्जिताः
Then expulsion occurred, and the gods were conquered from heaven.
स्वर्गद्वारे निरुद्धे तु शक्राद्या भयविह्वलाः
When the gate of heaven was blocked, Indra and the others were overwhelmed with fear.
तस्याग्रे कथितं सर्वं स्वर्गद्वारावरोधनम्
In their presence, everything regarding the blockade of heaven's gate was explained.
प्रवेशो दुर्लभो जातः कृते द्वारावरोधने ।। केनोपायेन यास्यामः स्वर्गलोकं तथाविधम्
Entry became difficult when the gate was blocked; by what means shall we reach such a heavenly realm?
नास्माकं जायते प्रीतिर्विना स्वर्गं पितामह 5.2.9.
O Grandsire, without heaven, joy does not arise for us.
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा प्रोक्तं तु ब्रह्मणा तदा
Hearing their words, Brahmā then spoke.
स्तुत्यो वंद्यो नमस्कार्यः सृष्टि संहारकारकः ३२ गोप्ता स्रष्टा समर्थश्च स चास्माकं परा गतिः
He is to be praised, worshipped, and saluted; the maker of creation and destruction, the protector, the creator, the capable one, and he is our supreme refuge.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन गम्यतां शरणं शिवः
Therefore, with all effort, seek refuge in Śiva.
त्रिदशैः सहितः शक्र तूर्णं गच्छ ममाज्ञया
Together with the gods, O Indra, quickly go by my command.
स्वर्गद्वार परं लिंगं विद्यते तत्तु वासव तमाराधयत क्षिप्रं स वः कामं प्रदास्यति
At the gate of heaven there is a supreme liṅga, O Vāsava; worship it swiftly, for he will grant you your desire.
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा त्रिदशा मुदिता भृशम्
Hearing Brahmā’s words, the gods became exceedingly joyful.
स्वर्गद्वारप्रदं पुण्यं ददृशुर्लिंगमुत्तमम्
They saw the supreme liṅga, bestower of heaven’s gate and merit.
स्वर्गलोकं गताः सर्वे यथापूर्वं यशस्विनि
All of them, illustrious one, reached heaven as before.
मयाज्ञप्ताश्च ते सर्वे निवर्त्तध्वं गणोत्तमाः ।। 5.2.9.
All of you, excellent Gaṇas, whom I have instructed, now return.
स्वर्गद्वारप्रदो देवो दृष्टो देवैर्न संशयः
The god who grants the gate of heaven has been seen by the gods, without doubt.
स्वर्गद्वारं गताः सद्यः शक्राद्यास्त्रिदशा गणाः
At once, Indra and the other gods and hosts reached the gate of heaven.
ख्यातिं यास्यति भूलोके स्वर्गलोकप्रदायकः
He who bestows the heavenly world will become renowned on earth.
ये पश्यंति नरा लोके स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं शिवम्
Those men who see Śiva, Lord of the Gate of Heaven, in this world—
स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं देवं ये पश्यंति प्रसंगतः
Those who see the god, Lord of the Gate of Heaven, even by chance—
