पुत्रस्तु पितरं द्वेष्टि पिता पुत्रं तथैव च
A son hates his father, and likewise a father hates his son.
मातरं स्वसुतो हंति माता पुत्रं हिनस्ति च
A son kills his mother, and a mother destroys her son.
सुराणामसुराणां च सर्वं घोरतरं महत् तोमराश्च सुतीक्ष्णाग्राः शस्त्राणि विविधानि च
Among gods and demons, all became exceedingly terrible; there were spears with very sharp points and various kinds of weapons.
सुवर्णार्थे महादेवि वमंतो रुधिरं बहु
For the sake of gold, O great goddess, they shed much blood.
असिशक्तिगदाऋष्ट्यो निपेतुर्धरणीतले
Swords, spears, maces, and arrows fell upon the earth.
रुधिरेणावलिप्तांगा निहताश्च परस्परम्
Their bodies smeared with blood, they were slain by one another.
हाहाकारः समभवद्भयकृच्च सहस्रशः
A great and terrifying clamor arose by the thousands.
परिघैरायसैः पाशैर्वज्रकल्पैश्च मुष्टिभिः 5.2.6.
With iron clubs, nooses, and fists as hard as thunderbolts,
छिंधिभिंधि प्रधाव त्वं पातयाधिसरेति च
They shouted: 'Cut! Break! Run forward! Strike down! Attack!'
एवं तु तुमुले युद्धे वर्त्तमाने महाभये
Thus, as that tumultuous and dreadful battle raged on,
क्षुभ्यंति स्म समुद्राश्च चेलुश्च धरणीधराः
The oceans were agitated, and the mountains shook.
ऋषयो वालखिल्याद्या देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः
The sages, beginning with the Vālakhilyas, and the gods led by Indra,
सोच्छ्वासा कथयामासुर्जर्जरीकृतमस्तकाः
Breathless and with battered heads, began to speak.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तेषां ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः
Hearing their words, Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds,
मया पृष्टास्तु ते सर्वे केनैते जर्जरीकृताः
Asked them all, 'By whom have you been so battered?'
कश्चासौ दानवो दुष्टो येन वै पीडिता भृशम्
'Who is that wicked Dānava by whom you have been so grievously afflicted?'
ते मामूचुस्तदा देवा ब्रह्माद्या भयकारणम्
Then the gods, along with Brahmā and the others, told me the cause of their fear.
लोभात्सर्वे विनष्टाः स्म सुवर्णस्य च कारणात् 5.2.6.
'We have all been destroyed out of greed, and because of gold.'
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा मया ज्ञातं वरानने
Hearing their words, O beautiful one, I understood.
लोकत्रयविनाशश्च सहसा येन वै कृतः
It was he by whom, suddenly, the destruction of the three worlds was wrought.
ब्रह्महा वह्निपुत्रस्तु यमुद्दिश्य मृतो जनः
The slayer of Brahmins is the son of Agni, because of whom people have died.
धातवो हि भविष्यंति तस्य देहे न संशयः
Indeed, metals will arise in his body—there is no doubt.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वह्निर्दृष्ट्वा पुत्रस्य चेष्टितम्
Meanwhile, Agni, seeing the actions of his son,
आजगाम सुवर्णेन सार्द्धं देवि ममांतिकम्
Came to me, O goddess, together with Suvarṇa.
रक्षणीयस्त्वया देव पुत्रोयं तव शंकर
O god, this son of yours, O Śaṃkara, must be protected by you.
त्वयि तुष्टे महादेव प्राप्योऽयं नात्र संशयः
When you are pleased, O great god, he will attain his goal—of this there is no doubt.
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पितृदेवमुखस्य च
Hearing these words from the mouth of the Pitṛ-devas,
स्नेहान्मया वह्निपुत्र उत्संगे च कृतस्तदा 5.2.6.
Out of affection, I then placed the son of Agni upon my lap.
ददामि ते महाभाग वरं वरय शोभनम्
I grant you, O highly fortunate one, a boon—choose a splendid blessing.
अहमाज्ञापयामि त्वां श्रेयश्चैवमवाप्स्यसि
I command you, and thus you will attain the highest good.
