सर्वतीर्थाभिषेकैस्तु यत्पुण्यं प्राप्यते नरैः
The merit that men obtain by bathing at all holy places—
तावत्पतंति संसारे सुखदुःखसमाकुले
They fall again and again in the world, filled with pleasure and pain.
यदा पापक्षयः पुंसां तदा त्वद्दर्शनं भवेत्
When a person's sins are destroyed, then your vision occurs.
ब्रह्महा वा सुरापो वा स्तेयी च गुरुतल्पगः सोऽपि याति परं स्थानं पुनरावृत्तिवर्जितम्
Even a killer of a Brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a thief, or one who violates the teacher's bed—he too attains the supreme state, free from return.
यत्फलं चाश्वमेधेन राजसूयेन यत्फलम्
The fruit that comes from an Aśvamedha or the fruit that comes from a Rājasūya—
ते नराः पशवो लोके तेषां जन्म निरर्थकम्
Those men are like animals in this world; their birth is in vain.
इत्युक्त्वा केशवो देवो ब्रह्मा चैव वरानने 5.2.5.
Having spoken thus, the god Keśava and Brahmā, O beautiful-faced one—
एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः
Thus, O goddess, I have told you this glory, which destroys all sin.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण धनवानिह जायते
By merely beholding him, wealth arises here.
पुरा सार्द्धं त्वया देवि क्रीडतो मम मंदिरे
Once, O Goddess, while you were playing with me in my palace,
देवैः सर्वैस्ततो वह्निः प्रेरितो मम संनिधौ
Then, at that time, all the gods sent Agni into my presence.
ततो वह्निमुखे क्षिप्तं वीर्यं स्वं क्रीडता मया
Thereupon, as I was playing, my seed was cast into the mouth of Agni.
तत्र गत्वा प्रचिक्षेप वीर्यमग्निः सुदुर्द्धरम्
Going there, Agni deposited that exceedingly difficult-to-bear seed.
जातं रम्यं ततो दिव्यं वीर्यशेषेण कांचनम्
From what remained of that divine seed, beautiful gold was born.
अग्नेरपत्यं प्रथमं दृष्ट्वोत्पन्नं तु पार्वति
Seeing the first offspring of Agni thus produced, O Pārvatī,
यक्षाः साध्याः पिशाचाश्च मनुष्या राक्षसाः खगाः
Yakṣas, Sādhyas, Piśācas, humans, Rākṣasas, and birds—
सुवर्णार्थे महान्नादो ममेदमिति जल्पताम्
For the sake of gold, a great tumult arose, each one shouting, 'This is mine!'
अथावरणमुख्यानि नानाप्रहरणानि च 5.2.6.
Then, the chief weapons and various arms appeared.
असुरा असुरैः सार्द्धं मनुष्या मानुषैः सह
The Asuras with the Asuras, and humans with humans,
भूतैः सार्द्धं च भूतानि राक्षसैः सह राक्षसाः
Beings with beings, and Rākṣasas with Rākṣasas,
पुत्रस्तु पितरं द्वेष्टि पिता पुत्रं तथैव च
A son hates his father, and likewise a father hates his son.
मातरं स्वसुतो हंति माता पुत्रं हिनस्ति च
A son kills his mother, and a mother destroys her son.
सुराणामसुराणां च सर्वं घोरतरं महत् तोमराश्च सुतीक्ष्णाग्राः शस्त्राणि विविधानि च
Among gods and demons, all became exceedingly terrible; there were spears with very sharp points and various kinds of weapons.
सुवर्णार्थे महादेवि वमंतो रुधिरं बहु
For the sake of gold, O great goddess, they shed much blood.
असिशक्तिगदाऋष्ट्यो निपेतुर्धरणीतले
Swords, spears, maces, and arrows fell upon the earth.
रुधिरेणावलिप्तांगा निहताश्च परस्परम्
Their bodies smeared with blood, they were slain by one another.
हाहाकारः समभवद्भयकृच्च सहस्रशः
A great and terrifying clamor arose by the thousands.
परिघैरायसैः पाशैर्वज्रकल्पैश्च मुष्टिभिः 5.2.6.
With iron clubs, nooses, and fists as hard as thunderbolts,
छिंधिभिंधि प्रधाव त्वं पातयाधिसरेति च
They shouted: 'Cut! Break! Run forward! Strike down! Attack!'
एवं तु तुमुले युद्धे वर्त्तमाने महाभये
Thus, as that tumultuous and dreadful battle raged on,
