यत्र स्नात्वा च दत्त्वा च यथाशक्त्या जितेंद्रियः
There, after bathing and giving according to one's ability, with the senses subdued,
नरकस्थाश्च ये केचित्पितरश्च पितामहाः
Those ancestors and grandfathers who are in hell—
तस्मिञ्छ्राद्धे कृते विप्र पितॄणामनृणो भवेत्
When the śrāddha is performed there, O Brāhmaṇa, one becomes free from debt to the ancestors.
कर्त्तव्यमृषिनिर्दिष्टं पिण्याकेन गुडेन वा
It should be done as prescribed by the sages, with piṇḍa or with molasses.
तत्र श्राद्धं प्रकर्त्तव्यं नरैः श्रद्धासमन्वितैः
There, the śrāddha should be performed by men endowed with faith.
तुष्टेषु पितृषु श्रीमाञ्जायतेपुत्रवाँस्तथा
When the ancestors are satisfied, a prosperous man is born, possessing sons.
श्रियं च विपुलान्भोगाञ्छ्राद्धकृद्भयो न संशयः
There is no doubt that one who performs śrāddha obtains prosperity and abundant enjoyments.
श्राद्धं श्रद्धायुतैः सम्यगभीष्टफलकांक्षिभिः
Śrāddha should be properly performed by those who are full of faith and desire the fruits they wish for.
सोमवारेण संयुक्ता अमावास्या यदा भवेत् 2.8.9.
When the new moon falls on a Monday,
अन्यदा सोमवारेण तत्र श्राद्धं विधानतः
Or on any other Monday, śrāddha should be performed there according to the prescribed method.
तत्र पूर्वदिशाभागे तीर्थं सर्वोत्तमोत्तमम्
There, in the eastern direction, is the most excellent of all sacred places.
तत्र स्नात्वा च दत्त्वा च पिशाचो नैव जायते कर्त्तव्यं च प्रयत्नेन नरैः श्रद्धासमन्वितैः
There, by bathing and giving gifts, one does not become a piśāca; it must be performed diligently by people endowed with faith.
मार्गशीर्षे शुक्लपक्षे चतुर्दश्यां विशेषतः
Especially on the fourteenth day of the bright half of Mārgaśīrṣa,
तत्संनिधौ पूर्वभागे मानसंनाम नामतः तत्र स्नानेन दानेन सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्
In that vicinity, to the east, is a place called Mānasa by name; by bathing and giving gifts there, one attains all desires.
नानाविधानि पापानि मेरुतुल्यानि वै पुनः
Various kinds of sins, as weighty as Mount Meru, again—
यत्किञ्चिद्विद्यते पापं मानसं कायिकं तथा
Whatever sin exists, whether mental or physical,
प्रौष्ठपद्यां सदा कार्य्या पौर्णमास्यां विशेषतः
It should always be performed in the month of Bhādrapada, especially on the full moon.
तस्माद्दक्षिणदिग्भागे वर्त्तते सुकृतैकभूः
Therefore, in the southern direction, there is a land of singular merit.
यत्र स्नानं तथा दानं सर्वपापहरं सदा 2.8.9.
Where bathing and giving gifts always remove all sins.
नानाविधानि स्थानानि मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम्
There are various places for sages of purified minds.
यस्यास्तीरे मुनिश्रेष्ठ सर्वत्र सुमनोहरम्
On whose banks, O best of sages, everything is most delightful.
यस्मात्स्थानात्समुद्भूता तमसा सुतरंगिणी
From which place arose the river Tamasā, with many streams.
यस्य दर्शनतो नॄणां सर्वपापक्षयो भवेत्
By seeing which, all the sins of people are destroyed.
प्रफुल्लनानाविधगुल्मशोभितं लताप्रतानावनतं मनोहरम्
Adorned with blooming, various kinds of shrubs, covered with trailing vines, it is enchanting.
तमालगुल्मैर्निचितं सुगंधिभिः सकर्णिकारैर्बकुलैश्च सर्वतः
Covered everywhere with fragrant tamāla shrubs, karṇikāra, and bakula trees.
क्वचित्प्रफुल्लांबुजरेणुभूषितैर्विहंगमैश्चारुफलप्रचारिभिः
In some places adorned with the pollen of blooming lotuses, and with birds moving about, seeking beautiful fruits.
क्वचिच्च चक्राह्वरवोपनादितं क्वचिच्च कादम्बकदम्बकैर्युतम्
Elsewhere, resounding with the calls of cakravāka birds, and filled with clusters of kādamba trees.
मदाकुलाभिर्भ्रमरीभिरारान्निषेवितं चारुसुगंधिपुष्पवत्
Attended by intoxicated swarms of bees, delighting in the sweetly fragrant flowers.
प्रहृष्टनानाविधपक्षिसेवितं प्रमत्तहारीतकुलोपनादितम् 2.8.9.
Inhabited by joyful birds of many kinds, and enlivened by the cries of excited flocks of parrots.
निबिडनिचुलनीलं नीलकण्ठाभिरामं मदमुदितविहंगीवृन्दनादाभिरामम्
Dense with deep-blue nīcula trees, charming with peacocks, and delightful with the songs of jubilant flocks of birds.
