ततो ऽगस्त्यो महात्मा वै तान्हत्वा शोकमूर्छितः 5.2.1.
Then the great-souled Agastya, having slain them, was overcome with grief.
कृतं घोरं महत्पापं हता यद्दानवा मया किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि कथं शुध्येय चाप्यहम्
A terrible, great sin has been committed—since I have slain the Dānavas. What shall I do? Where shall I go? How can I be purified?
एवं चिंतयतस्तस्य समागच्छत्पितामहः
As he was thinking in this way, the Grandfather (Brahmā) approached him.
लक्ष्यसे मुनिशार्दूल कारणं कथ्यतां त्वरम्
You are seen, O best of sages—state the reason quickly.
देवदेव जगन्नाथ दाहोंतर्मानसं मम
O God of gods, Lord of the universe, there is a burning within my mind.
ममोपायं समाचक्ष्व प्रसादत्सुरसत्तम
Tell me the means, O best of the gods, by your grace.
प्रोवाचेदं सुरश्रेष्ठः शृणु त्वं यत्नतः परम्
The best of the gods spoke these words: Listen carefully and with attention.
महाकालवने दिव्ये यक्षगंधर्वसेविते
In the great, divine forest of Mahākāla, attended by Yakṣas and Gandharvas,
पिशाचस्यापि तीर्थस्य भागे दक्षिणतः स्थितम्
There stands, to the south of the sacred place of the Piśāca, a portion (of that forest).
आराधय शुभं लिंगं सर्वपापप्रणा शनम्
Worship the auspicious Liṅga there, which removes all sins.
तस्मिन्स लिंगे देवेशि समाराधनतत्परः 5.2.1.
There, O goddess of the gods, he became wholly devoted to the worship of that Liṅga.
अहं तुष्टस्तदा देवि मुनेस्तस्य महात्मनः
Then I was pleased, O goddess, with that great-souled sage.
प्रोक्तं मया महाभाग मुने शृणु समाहितः
I have spoken, O highly fortunate one; O sage, listen with concentration.
तुष्टोऽहमनया भक्त्या तपसा दुष्करेण तु
I am pleased by this devotion and by the difficult austerity.
प्रणष्टा ब्रह्महत्या ते दानवोत्था मुनीश्वर
The brahmahatyā arising from the Dānavas is destroyed for you, O best of sages.
यदि देव प्रसन्नस्त्वं शरणागतवत्सलः
If you, O god, are gracious, compassionate to those who seek refuge—
तपस्यथ तथा धर्मे न मे विघ्नो भवेदिति मया प्रोक्तं विशालाक्षि मुने एवं भविष्यति
If you practice austerity and righteousness, then no obstacle will arise for me—thus I have spoken, O wide-eyed one; O sage, so it shall be.
यस्त्वया पूजितो देवो ब्रह्महत्याविनाशनः
The god whom you have worshipped is the destroyer of brahmahatyā.
अगस्त्येश्वरदेवोपि विख्यातो भुवनत्रये कृपया तस्य लिंगस्य पंचमुद्राविभूषितः
Even the god Agastyeśvara is renowned in the three worlds, adorned with the five seals out of compassion for that liṅga.
ये नरास्तन्महालिंगं निरीक्षिष्यंति भक्तितः
Those men who behold that great liṅga with devotion—
भविष्यंति महात्मानः पुत्रैश्वर्यसमन्विताः 5.2.1.
—they become great-souled, endowed with sons and prosperity.
स्तुता गंधर्वमुख्यैश्च रुद्रलोके च शाश्वते
Praised by the foremost of Gandharvas, they dwell eternally in Rudra's realm.
कृतपुण्या नरा मर्त्त्यास्ते यांति परमं पदम्
Those mortals who have performed meritorious deeds attain the supreme state.
अशुभं क्षयमाप्नोति कस्तं न प्रणमेच्छिवम्
He destroys misfortune—who would not bow to that Śiva?
मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यादिपा तकैर्नरकप्रदैः
One is freed from sins such as brahminicide, which bring about hell.
राजसूयशतेनैव यत्पुण्यं च भविष्यति
The merit that arises is equal to that of a hundred Rājasūya sacrifices.
किं तीर्थैर्विविधैः स्नानैः किं दानैर्विविधैः कृतैः
What need is there for various pilgrimages, for various gifts and baths performed?
अष्टम्यां च चतुर्द्दश्यां दिने सोमस्य शक्तितः कुलानां तारयत्येव मातृकं पितृकं शतम्
On the eighth and fourteenth days, according to one's ability, one rescues a hundred maternal and paternal ancestors.
ये च पश्यंति पुरुषा भावहीनाः प्रसंगतः
And those men who see it without feeling, merely by chance—
एतत्ते कथितं देवि लिंगमहात्म्यमुत्तमम्
This, O Goddess, is the supreme greatness of the liṅga that has been told to you.
