पुरुषोत्तमं परं तीर्थं त्वया प्रोक्तं पुरानघ एतत्तु श्रोतुमिच्छामि त्वत्तो ब्रह्मविदां वर
O sinless one, you have spoken of Purushottama, the supreme holy place of old; I wish to hear about it from you, O best among knowers of Brahman.
शृणुष्व भो द्विजश्रेष्ठ कथां पापहरां पराम्
Listen, O best of twice-born, to the supreme story that removes sin.
यस्याः श्रवणमात्रेण महापापक्षयो भवेत्
By merely hearing it, the destruction of great sins occurs.
समासीनो रमानाथः पार्षदैः सनकादिभिः
Seated with his attendants, such as Sanaka and others, was Ramānātha.
ऋदिसिद्धिगुणोपेतैस्तत्त्वैस्तैर्महदादिभिः
Those companions were endowed with the qualities of sages and powers, with the principles beginning from the great elements.
किन्नरोद्गानसन्मानैर्नृत्यद्भिरप्सरोगणैः
Honored by the singing of Kinnaras and the dancing of groups of Apsaras,
कल्पद्रुमकृतच्छाय आसीनो हि मुरुद्विषः
He, the enemy of Mura, sat beneath the shade made by the wish-fulfilling tree.
तेषां मध्ये परा भाषा ह्यपृच्छत्कमलापतिम्
Among them, the supreme speech was addressed to the lord of lotuses.
सर्वज्ञोसि महाप्राज्ञ वाच्यतां यदि रोचते
You are all-knowing, greatly wise; let it be spoken, if it pleases you.
तथापि विधिना प्राप्तं तत्सर्वं चाक्षयं भवेत् ।। 5.1.60.
Yet, whatever is attained by prescribed means, all that becomes imperishable.
देशे काले पर्वणि च तीर्थे चायतने पदे
In place, time, festival, holy site, temple, or abode,
पूर्णमास्याममावास्यां संक्रांतौ ग्रहणे तथा
On the full moon, new moon, solstice, or during an eclipse,
गंगायां भास्करक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे च पुष्करे
On the Ganges, at the field of the Sun, at Kurukshetra, or at Pushkara,
अवंत्यां च हुतं दत्तं तत्सर्वं चाक्षयं भवेत्
And in Avanti, whatever is offered or given, all that becomes imperishable.
कुचैलो दुर्भगो मूर्खो जडो रोगसमन्वितः
Clad in rags, unfortunate, foolish, dull-witted, afflicted by disease—
के योगाः सुकृतानां च कर्तव्याश्च विशेषतः
What are the disciplines for the virtuous, and especially, what should be performed?
मलमासे समायाते ये नरा व्रतवर्जिताः
When the impure month arrives, those men who neglect observances—
कदा काले समायाति एतन्नो वद विस्तरात्
When does that time come? Tell me this in detail.
देवतापितृकार्याणि विधिना हि मलिम्लुचे
Rites for the gods and ancestors, indeed, are to be performed with proper procedure in the impure month.
क्षौरं मौंजी विवाहश्च व्रतोपवासकं तथा 5.1.60.
Shaving, the sacred grass girdle, marriage, and also vows and fasting—
संवत्सरत्रयांते च मासोऽयमधिगच्छति
At the end of three years, this month is attained.
अधिमासाधिपत्योऽहं सदैव पुरुषोत्तमः
I am always the lord of the extra month, O Supreme Person.
पुरुषोत्तमाख्यं मे धाम सदैवात्र प्रति ष्ठति .
My abode, known as Puruṣottama, is ever established here.
महाकालवने तत्र यत्र तीर्थं ममाभिधम्
In the great forest of Time, there, where my sacred ford is named—
तेषामिह ममादेयं न कदापि भविष्यति
For them, here, nothing of mine is ever to be received.
असंक्रांतेऽपि संप्राप्ते मामुद्दिश्य व्रतं चरेत्
Even if the extra month has not arrived, when it does, one should undertake a vow in my honor.
स्नानं दानं जपो होमः स्वाध्यायः पितृतर्पणम्
Bathing, giving, recitation, offering, self-study, and ancestor-satiation—
अक्षयं च भवेत्सर्वं तेषां वै कमले धुवम्
All these surely become inexhaustible for them, O Kamalā.
दारिद्र्यं च सदा तेषां शोकरोगविवर्धनम्
Poverty always increases their grief and disease.
तेषां ददाम्यहं प्रीत्या त्वामेव च न संशयः तत्सर्वं मत्प्रसादेन ह्यनंतं प्रियदर्शने ।। 5.1.60.
To them, out of affection, I surely give you, and there is no doubt; all this, by my grace, is endless, O lovely one.
