स्वधाकारो वषट्कारः स्वाहाकारो न दृश्यते
The svadhā-invocation, the vaṣaṭ-call, and the svāhā-offering were not seen.
नैव तीर्थं प्रकाशेत पुण्यान्यायतनानि च
No holy place was revealed, nor were the sacred shrines.
उच्छिन्ना हि तदा जातास्तस्मिन्राज्ञि दुरात्मनि
At that time, when that wicked king ruled, all were destroyed.
पाखंडिनोऽपरा क्रांताः सर्वे धर्मबहिर्मुखाः
Other heretics arose, all turning away from righteousness.
बहुम्लेच्छा बहुक्लेशा बह्वाबाधावनी कृता
Many foreigners, much suffering, and great affliction came upon the earth.
तमीभूतं जगत्सर्वं दृश्यते वसुधातले 5.1.52.
The whole world appeared shrouded in darkness upon the face of the earth.
यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत
Whenever there is a decline of righteousness, O descendant of Bharata,
इति ज्ञात्वा महाविष्णुर्वाराहं वपुरात्मवान्
Knowing this, the great Vishnu, possessing self-mastery, took the form of a Boar.
यूपदंष्ट्रो हविर्गंधो बीजौषधितनूरुहः
With sacrificial post as his tusk, the fragrance of oblations, and his body composed of seeds, herbs, and plants,
अंतरास्यरुचादार्ढो यज्ञकायः सुदक्षिणः
Firm with the radiance within his mouth, his body was that of sacrifice, and he was supremely generous.
हौत्रश्वासपरो दक्षसदस्यावयवः स्मृतः
His breath was the sacrificial offering, he was devoted to the sacrificial act, and his limbs were the members of the sacrificial assembly.
वेदिपल्वलसंस्तारो ब्रह्माध्वर्युर्वनाकरः
The expanse of the Vedas was his marsh, Brahma the officiating priest, and the forest his abode.
आद्यः पुरुष ईशानः पुरुहूतः पुरुष्टुतः
He is the primeval person, the Lord, invoked by many, and praised by many.
संग्रामान्सुबहून्कृत्वा बहुकष्टेन विष्णुना
Having fought many battles with great hardship, Vishnu,
उद्धृता च वराहेण दंष्ट्रया चंद्ररेखया
The earth was lifted up by the Boar, with his tusk shining like the crescent moon.
ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः 5.1.52.
Auspicious winds blew, and the sun shone with great brilliance.
सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यः सागराः प्रकृतिं गतः
The rivers flowed in their courses, and the oceans returned to their natural state.
वाराहमूर्तिर्भगवान्सर्वकामफलप्रदः
The blessed Boar form, bestower of all desired fruits, appeared.
तस्यापि हृदयाज्जाता नदी ह्येषा सनातनी
From his very heart was born this eternal river.
बहुयोजनविस्तारा बहुला कामचारिणी
Vast for many leagues, abundant, and moving as she pleases,
सरला तरलच्छाया यक्षगंधर्वसेविता
Straight and with shimmering waves, attended by Yakshas and Gandharvas,
अप्सरोभिर्नृत्यमाना स्तूयमाना महर्षिभिः
Dancing with Apsaras and praised by great sages,
तुंगस्तनभराक्रांतयोषिद्भिः क्रीडितान्तरा
Amidst playful women, their breasts heavy and high, she was sported in.
सर्वदा सर्वकाले च सिद्धैः सिद्धिप्रदा नृणाम्
At all times and in every season, she grants success to men, together with the Siddhas.
महाकालवने रम्ये रम्या पद्मावती पुरी
In the beautiful Mahākāla forest stands the delightful city of Padmāvatī.
यत्र स्नात्वा नरा यांति शिवलोकं सनातनम् 5.1.52.
There, after bathing, people attain the eternal realm of Śiva.
वाराहेण कृतं सर्वं दुष्टदैत्यनिबर्हणम्
All the destruction of wicked demons was accomplished by Varāha.
कृतप्रांजलयः सर्वे देवा इंद्रपुरोगमाः
All the gods, led by Indra, stood with hands joined in reverence.
देवदेव जगन्नाथ पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तन
O Lord of gods, Lord of the world, whose praise and hearing are meritorious.
येन पुण्यप्रभावेन पुनः स्वर्गो ह्यवाप्स्यते
By whose power of merit, heaven is once again attained.
