जपं होमं तथा श्राद्धं पितॄनुद्दिश्य देवताः 5.1.48.
Recitation, offerings into the fire, and ancestral rites performed for the forefathers and deities—
प्रतिकल्पामनुप्राप्य दृष्ट्वा देवं महेश्वरम्
At the beginning of each cycle, having arrived and seen the great god Maheshvara—
प्रसंगतो रजः क्लांतः शिप्रांभसि च मानवाः
Men, exhausted by the dust of worldly involvement, enter the waters of the Shipra.
मन्वंतरसहस्रेषु काशिवासेषु यत्फलम्
The fruit obtained by dwelling in Kashi for a thousand manvantaras—
प्रतिकल्पे च कल्पांते सैवासीच्च पुरी शुभा
At the end of each cycle and at the end of the kalpa, that auspicious city remains the same.
ये चैतस्य महाभागाः प्रीतिं कुर्वंति मानवाः
And those fortunate people who feel devotion for this place—
यः शृणोति कथां पुण्यां प्रतिकल्पोद्भवां शुभाम्
Whoever hears this auspicious and meritorious story arising in each cycle—
युगेयुगे यथा जाता तथा ख्याता मयाऽनघ
As it was born in each age, so have I described it, O sinless one.
शिप्रायाश्च कथां पुण्यां पवित्रां पापहारिणीम्
And the holy story of the Shipra, pure and destroyer of sin—
सुन्दरं कुंडमाख्यातं पिशाचमोचनं तथा
The beautiful pond has been described, as well as the place that frees from ghosts.
पुष्कराणि च सर्वाणि गयातीर्थमनुत्तमम्
All the sacred ponds, and the supreme Gayā-tirtha—
ख्यातं संगमजं तीर्थं शनेर्जन्मकथां शुभाम्
The sacred place born of the confluence has been described, and the auspicious story of Shani's birth.
पुरुषोत्तममहिमानं काले केन कथं भवेत्
How and by whom, at what time, does the greatness of Purushottama manifest?
यस्मिन्काले यदा जाता महाकालवने शुभे

नास्ति वत्स महीपृष्ठे शिप्रायाः सदृशी नदी
O dear one, there is no river on earth equal to the Shipra.
वैकुण्ठे जायते शिप्रा ज्वरघ्नी च सुरालये
The Shipra is born in Vaikuntha and, as the destroyer of fever, in the abode of the gods.
वाराहकल्पे वै प्रोक्ता विष्णुदेहेति नामतः 5.1.49.
In the Varaha Kalpa, it is indeed called by the name 'Vishnu's body.'
वक्तुमर्हसि शिप्रायाः समासेन कथां शुभाम्

महादेवो विशुद्धात्मा सर्वलोकेषु सर्वतः
Mahadeva, pure in spirit, is present everywhere in all the worlds.
अप्राप्तभिक्षो भिक्षार्थी वैकुण्ठमगमद्विभुः
The mighty one, seeking alms but not yet having received any, went to Vaikuntha.
लोकनिंदापरः क्रुद्धः क्षुधितो बहुवासरैः
He, intent on defying the world, angry and hungry for many days,
कपालं च करे कृत्वा इत्यु वाच पुनः पुनः
Taking a skull in his hand, he repeatedly said:
इत्युक्त्वा करमुद्यम्य तर्जन्यगुंलिमादधत्
Having spoken thus, he raised his hand, placing his index finger upon it.
तदांगुलिसमुद्भूतं बहु सुस्रावशोणितम्
Then, from that finger, a great stream of blood began to flow.
तदा उद्वेलिता सा वै धारा जाता समं ततः
At that time, the stream welled up and flowed forth together from there.
वैकुंठे चाभवत्सद्यो नदी त्रैलोक्यपावनी
In Vaikuntha, there immediately appeared a river that purifies the three worlds.
ज्वरघ्नी च यथा प्रोक्ता तथा व्यास ब्रवीम्यहम् 5.1.49.
As it is said to destroy fever, so I, Vyasa, declare it.
योधयामास दैत्येंद्रो ह्यनिरुद्धप्र हेलनः
The lord of the Daityas fought, unrestrained and mocking.
तस्मात्क्रुद्धो वासुदेवश्चक्रमादाय सत्वरः
Then, angered, Vasudeva swiftly took up his discus.
स तदा भग्नसंकल्पश्छिन्नदोश्च व्रणार्दितः
