The Tretā Yuga, in its measure, is three thousand years.
Likewise, the Dvāpara is said to be two thousand years; its twilight and dawn are each two hundred.
The Kali Yuga is a thousand years; this reckoning is stated by the wise.
Four thousand for Kṛta, three thousand for Tretā, two thousand four hundred for Dvāpara, and one thousand two hundred for Kali—this is declared as the twelve-thousand count of the yugas.
Then he again created this entire world, O dear one.
That yuga, multiplied by seventy-one, O best of twice-born, is so reckoned.
The course of the sun is also described as two: the southern and the northern.
Then, another Manu arises, and the same span of time occurs again.
At that very time, the course is declared by the sage who sees the truth.
Up to a thousand yugas, that night is spoken of by the wise.
O best of the twice-born, when that thousand of ages is completed,
Those seventy ages, along with their fractions, have been recounted to you.
These fourteen Manus, enhancers of fame, have been described.
O Vyāsa, lords of creatures are they, whose blessedness is celebrated.
In the intervals of the Manus, there are dissolutions, and at the end of those dissolutions, new creations; it is not possible to recount all of them, even in hundreds of years.
The emanation of beings, O Bhārata, and their dissolution as well,
Where all the gods dwell together with the seven sages,
When the thousand ages are complete, that is called a full kalpa.
Having placed Brahmā at the forefront, along with the hosts of Ādityas, O twice-born,
He is the creator of all beings, and at the end of each kalpa, he creates again and again.
He alone exists, O Vyāsa, united with the great lords.
Dissolution does not affect, O Vyāsa, those in the excellent forest of Mahākāla.
Free from disease, free from distress, unchanging in every age,
Here itself, in this delightful forest, Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds,
Marīci, Kaśyapa, Rudra, and others such as Bhṛgu as well,
Thus, in the beginning, O Vyāsa, the kalpa is established in this way.
The distinctions of kalpas have been described in the auspicious forest of Mahākāla.
So many signs of yoga, O noble one, remain in the forest.
Again and again, this city will come into being; indeed, it is said to be immovable.
O Vyasa, it will be renowned on earth as 'Pratikalpa.'
