किंनरा देवगन्धर्वा ह्यप्सराश्च वरांगनाः
Kinnaras, divine Gandharvas, and Apsaras of exquisite beauty,
यक्षा गुह्यकसंघाश्च पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः
Yakṣas, hosts of Guhyakas, Piśācas, serpents, and Rākṣasas—
उपासांचक्रिरे तत्र देवदेवमुमापतिम् उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा शंकरं जगदाश्रयम्
All of them worshipped there the god of gods, the consort of Umā, and addressed Śaṃkara, the refuge of the world, with gentle words.
पश्य एतान्महाभागान्ध्यायमानांस्तवाश्रितान् ।।5.1.47.
Behold these greatly fortunate ones, absorbed in meditation, devoted to your praise.
नानुपेक्ष्याश्च तान्सर्वान्वातवर्षातपार्दितान्
They should not be neglected, all those afflicted by wind, rain, and heat.
यथायोग्यं वासनार्थं स्थानं परमशोभनम्
Provide, as appropriate, a most splendid place for their residence.
एषा मे वासना स्वामिन्भवतां यदि रोचते कल्पयामास पुरीं रम्यां सर्वभूतमनोरमाम्
This is my wish, O Lord, if it pleases you: let a delightful city be established, enchanting to all beings.
बहुयोजनविस्तीर्णां दिव्यां दिव्यजनप्रियाम्
Vast in extent by many yojanas, divine, and beloved by celestial beings.
दिव्याभिप्रायसंयुक्तां दिव्यस्थानमनोरमाम्
Endowed with divine intentions, and possessing a divine, charming location.
क्रयविक्रयसंपन्नहट्टाट्टालकचत्वराम्
Filled with markets for buying and selling, towers, and crossroads.
स्फाटिकाभित्तिरचितां वैडूर्यमणिभूमिकाम्
Constructed with walls of crystal, and floors of beryl gems.
आरक्तमणिदेहल्यां द्वारशाखाभिमंडिताम्
With thresholds of red jewels, adorned with doorposts.
मणिरत्नसमाभूमिद्वाराजिरगृहांतराम्
With interiors and doorways made of precious gems and jewels.
हेमस्तं भध्वजोपेताः पताकाश्च गृहेगृहे 5.1.47.
Each house furnished with golden pillars and flags, and banners at every dwelling.
वापीकूपतडागानि सरांसि विमलानि च
With pools, wells, tanks, and lakes, all pure and clear.
हंसकारंडवाकीर्णां शिखंडिगणशोभिताम्
Filled with swans and cranes, and beautified by flocks of peacocks.
क्वचिन्नृत्यंति मयूराः क्वचित्कूजंति कोकिलाः
In some places, peacocks dance; in others, cuckoos sing.
नरनारीगणाकीर्णां वर्णाश्रमनिषेविताम्
It is filled with groups of men and women, and honored by all the orders and stages of life.
चंद्रमालाकृतश्रेणीतोरणानीव च शोभते
It shines with rows of archways adorned like garlands of the moon.
यत्रालकापुरी रम्या कुबेरभवनांकिता
There is the delightful city of Alakā, marked by the palace of Kubera.
तत्र भोगवती दिव्या वरुणालय उत्तमः
There is the divine city of Bhogavatī, the excellent abode of Varuṇa.
संयमनीपुरी श्रेष्ठा धर्मराजेन पालिता
There is the foremost city of Saṃyamanī, governed by Dharmarāja.
देवतानां पुरी रम्या वासवेनाभिरक्षिता
There is the beautiful city of the gods, protected by Vāsava.
एवंविधानि रम्याणि पुरा बहुतराणि च 5.1.47.
Many such splendid cities exist, even more than these.
क्वचिद्रंभाकृतद्वारा यवांकुरघटाः शुभाः
In some places, the gates are made in the form of plantain trees, and auspicious jars of barley sprouts are set out.
क्वचिद्बालाः पठंति स्म वेदाध्ययनका द्विजाः
Elsewhere, young twice-born boys recite, engaged in Vedic study.
क्वचिच्चावभृथस्नाताः क्वचिद्दानान्यकुर्वत
In some places, people have bathed after sacrifices; in others, they are giving gifts.
क्वचिदारामपूर्तं वै क्वचिद्यात्रावधारणम्
Some are engaged in planting groves or constructing works; elsewhere, some are preparing for pilgrimages.
क्वचित्कथाप्रसंगांश्च परिशंसंति वाचकाः
In some places, speakers praise the topics of stories and discussions.
क्वचिन्मल्ला नियुध्यंते नटा नाट्यपराः क्वचित्
In some places, wrestlers compete; elsewhere, actors are absorbed in drama.
