अद्यप्रभृति पुरी व्यास उज्जयिनी समाश्रिताः
From today onward, Vyāsa, those who have taken refuge in the city of Ujjayinī—
न तेषां दुष्कृतं किंचिद्देहे तिष्ठति पापजम्
No sin or evil deed arising from wrongdoing remains in their bodies.
विद्यार्थी गिरीशं धनार्थी धनेशं सुतार्थी सुतेशं दिनेशं सुखार्थी ५७ य एतस्यां महाभाग सदा वसति मानवः
A seeker of knowledge approaches Lord Śiva, a seeker of wealth approaches the Lord of Wealth, a seeker of children approaches the Lord of Children, a seeker of happiness approaches the Lord of the Sun—
तत्रैव वसते नित्यं कल्पकोटिशताधिकम्
Whoever, O most fortunate one, always dwells in this city remains there for more than a hundred million aeons.
य एतां वै कथां पुण्यां पठते शृणुतेऽथ वा 5.1.43.
Whoever reads or listens to this sacred story—

Now listen attentively, Vyāsa, to this tale of great merit.
एकदा सर्वरत्नानां हानिर्जाता दुरात्मभिः
Once, all the jewels were lost because of evil-minded beings.
तदा सुरासुरैः सर्वैर्मिलित्वा मथितोंऽबु धिः
Then, all the gods and demons together churned the ocean.
कूर्मपृष्ठे विधिं कृत्वा रत्नानि दुदुहुस्तदा
Having made the tortoise's back the base, they then extracted the jewels.
तेन कृत्वा विषादोऽभूद्देवदानवयोस्तदा
Because of this, sorrow arose among the gods and the demons at that time.
वारितः कलहस्तेन देवदैत्यसमुद्भवः
By that act, the conflict born of gods and demons was restrained.
सागरांते च रत्नानि तिष्ठंति विविधानि च
At the edge of the ocean, various jewels remained.
मथ्यतामुदधिः शीघ्रं नात्र कार्या विचारणा
Let the ocean be churned quickly; there is no need for deliberation here.
मथ्यमानेंऽबुधौ तेषां मणिः प्राप्तश्च कौस्तुभः
As the ocean was being churned, they obtained the jewel called Kaustubha.
धन्वंतरिरथोत्पन्नश्चंद्रो जातोऽपि वै ततः 5.1.44.
Dhanvantari then arose, and the moon was also born from it.
उच्चैःश्रवा हयश्रेष्ठः सुधा रंभा ततस्ततः
Uccaiḥśravā, the best of horses, nectar, and Rambhā appeared thereafter.
पांचजन्यस्तथा शंखः करे तिष्ठति मुरद्विषः
Likewise, the conch Pāñcajanya came to rest in the hand of the enemy of Mura.
चतुर्दशापि रत्नानि प्राप्तानि विविधानि च
Thus, fourteen diverse jewels were obtained.
गत्वा ते च समासीना मंत्रं चक्रुः परस्परम्
Having gone there, they sat together and consulted with one another.
कोलाहलस्तथोत्पन्नो नारदः पुनरभ्यगात्
Then a great commotion arose, and Nārada came once again.
मोहनीरूपमास्थाय नारीभूत्वाभ्यगाद्धरिः
Assuming a form that bewilders, Hari approached, having become a woman.
विह्वलांगाश्च ते सर्वे कामबाणवशंगताः
All of them, their limbs enfeebled, fell under the sway of the arrows of desire.
हस्तलाघवयोगेन देवानाममृतं ददौ
By means of dexterity, he gave the nectar to the gods.
तेषामंतरगो भूत्वा पपौ चामृतमुत्तमम्
Having entered among them, he drank the supreme nectar.
सुधास्पर्शप्रसंगेन न ममारासुरस्तदा 5.1.44.
Because of contact with the nectar, the demon did not die at that time.
राहुकायात्समुद्भूतं बहु सुस्राव शोणितम्
From Rāhu’s body, much blood flowed forth.
तत्र स्नात्वा शुचिर्भूत्वा राहोर्दर्शनतत्पराः
There, having bathed and become pure, intent on beholding Rāhu—
वांछितार्थमवाप्नोति गोसहस्र फलं भवेत्
One attains the desired object and gains the merit of a thousand cows.
विभज्य भागांस्ते सर्वे प्राप्य रत्नभुजोऽभवन्
Having divided the shares, all of them became possessors of jewels.
सूर्याय च ददौ ह्यश्वं सप्तास्यं चाब्धिसंभवम्
He gave the horse with seven mouths, born of the ocean, to Sūrya.
