सरितः सागराः सर्वे सरांस्युपवनानि च
All rivers, oceans, lakes, and groves,
ज्योतींषि चंद्रसूर्यौ च सर्वं विष्णुमयं जगत् 5.1.42.
The luminaries, the moon and the sun—all the universe is pervaded by Viṣṇu,
सर्वमादाय भगवाञ्छंकरस्तत्र तिष्ठति
Having taken everything into himself, the blessed Śaṅkara remains there,
सर्वयज्ञमयो वेदः सर्वधर्ममयी दया
The Veda is the essence of all sacrifices, and compassion is the essence of all righteousness,
तस्माद्धितकरं क्षेत्रं कुरूणां वै सुरोत्तमाः
Therefore, O best of gods, this land of the Kurus is truly beneficial,
तस्माद्दशगुणा काशी काश्या दशगुणा गया
Therefore, Kāśī is ten times greater, and Gayā is ten times greater than Kāśī,
उपरागसहस्राणि व्यतिपातायुतानि च
Thousands of eclipses and tens of thousands of planetary conjunctions,
लक्षमिंदुक्षये दानं सहस्रं चायनद्वये
A gift given at the waning of a hundred thousand moons is equal to a thousand at the two solstices.
तस्माद्धितकरा देवा पुरी ह्येषा कुशस्थली
Therefore, O gods, this city called Kuśasthalī is beneficial.
तत्सर्वं भोः सुरश्रेष्ठाः सर्वं तच्चाक्षयं भवेत्
All of this, O best of gods, shall indeed become imperishable.
क्षीणपुण्या भवंतो वै बाधंते तेन वः सुराः
When your merit is exhausted, O gods, you are afflicted by that.
तत्र गत्वा भवंतो वै स्नानदानादिकं भुवि 5.1.42.
There, having gone, you should perform bathing, giving, and other rites upon the earth.
एतच्छुत्वा वचस्तस्या वाण्याश्चाकाशगं तदा
Having heard these words of hers, which were spoken and went forth into the sky,
पुनर्जग्मुः सुराः सर्वे यत्र माहेश्वरं वनम्
Then all the gods returned to the forest of Maheśvara.
चातुर्वर्ण्यसमाकीर्णामृषिगंधर्वसेविताम्
It was filled with the four castes and attended by sages and gandharvas.
दरिद्रो न जडो मूर्खो न रोगी न च मत्सरी
There is no one poor, dull, foolish, diseased, or envious.
दाता शांताः सुशीलाश्च जरारोगविवर्जिंताः
There, people are generous, peaceful, virtuous, and free from old age and disease.
नरा यत्र निवसंति नार्यश्चैव पतिव्रताः
Men reside there, and women who are devoted to their husbands.
ईदृशीं च पुरीं दृष्ट्वा देवा हर्षं परं गताः
Seeing such a city, the gods attained supreme joy.
पुण्यवद्भिः सदा सेव्यं सर्वतीर्थनिषे वितम्
It is always served by the virtuous, and is endowed with all sacred bathing places.
पुण्यं चाथाक्षयं लब्ध्वा पुनर्याताः सुरालयम्
Having obtained merit and imperishable reward, the gods returned again to their abode.
येऽस्यां कुर्युर्महाभागाः स्नानं दानं तथार्चनम् 5.1.42.
Those fortunate ones who perform bathing, giving, and worship in this city,
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन एतत्कार्यं सदा बुधैः
Therefore, with all effort, this should always be done by the wise.
कल्पेकल्पे च यस्यां वै तेनावंती पुरी स्मृता
In every age, this city is remembered as Avanti.
इत्युक्त्वा वै तदा देवाः स्वधाम परमं गताः
Having thus spoken, the gods then went to their supreme abode.
य एतां सुकथां दिव्यां पुण्यां च पापहारिणीम्
Whoever recites this auspicious, divine, and meritorious tale, which removes sin,
अपुत्रो लभते पुत्रमधनो धनमाप्नुयात्
A man without a son obtains a son; a poor man acquires wealth.
पुण्यं लब्ध्वा नरो नित्यं शिवलोके महीयते
Having gained merit, a person is always honored in the realm of Shiva.
तथाहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि शृणुष्व त्वं समाहितः
Thus I shall now explain; listen attentively with concentration.
त्रिपुराख्यो महादैत्यः सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरः
Tripura, the great demon, was always the lord of all the demon clans.
