In the former age of Tatpuruṣa, the wise knowers of the Veda,
the Creator fashioned the universe, along with the Daityas and Dānavas.
The gods and the Dānavas, always filled with rivalry, contended in battle.
The Cāraṇas, together with the Kinnaras, were likewise intent on enmity.
All the strong together with the weak among men.
Thus, by one another and by others, this world becomes without boundaries.
I go for refuge to the god Hari, remover of the distress of those who seek shelter.
Then Hari, the great yogi, bearing the form of the universe, was meditated upon.
Brahma, meditate upon me properly with the yoga of meditation, and see me.
Then the creator, hearing this, abandoned meditation and beheld him.
With water for washing the feet, for sipping, and with a honey-offering, to Keśava.
Except by you, O Viṣṇu, the world is not able to remain.
You are the ruler of this pure universe; there is no other.
The gods, demons, gandharvas, yakṣas, and rākṣasas destroy each other; you alone are able to protect them.
You are always the sustaining principle of this universe, both moving and unmoving, in the form of the soul of all living beings.
All this world is upheld by you; therefore you are called Upendra.
This universe is inhabited by you today, and the abode of the creator is thus Vāsudeva.
Because the world is according to your army, you are therefore remembered as Viśvasena.
The three worlds have been conquered by you, O god; since the creator is conquered by you, you are Jiṣṇu.
You are the king of all, beginning with existence; may your auspicious, unrivaled throne endure.
You have the discus named Sudarśana; thus you are sung by poets as the wielder of the discus.
Let there be steeds for your destruction of enemies, and also, O Hṛṣīkeśa, elephants with excellent tusks.
Be adorned with wondrous garments and excellent red garlands; become Bhīmasena.
May true devotion to you be present here, as it is for devotees of Mukunda; therefore, be gracious to me.
O Creator, show me that circle of his, and the ever-liberated Sadāśiva, O Lord.
Where I establish the world, let that place be firm; then Brahmā took a handful of sacred grass.
Then, having reached a higher ground, the Grandfather respectfully addressed Keśava.
You alone are Viṣṇu, always worshipped by the gods, remembered by the sages, and famed as Viṣṭaraśravā.
There, established on the sacred grass, the Supreme Person was thus praised by the Creator.
Then the Creator, the Supreme Person, encompassed it with a circuit measuring a yojana on all sides.
