महाविनायकः ख्यातस्तस्माल्लोकेऽभवन्मुने
Therefore, O sage, he became renowned in the world as Mahāvināyaka.
मासेमासे चतुर्थ्यां यो गणेशं पूजयेद्द्विज
Every month, on the fourth day, the twice-born who worships Ganesha—
स्वेदबिंदुरथो तस्य ललाटादपतद्भुवि 5.1.37.
Then a drop of sweat fell from his forehead onto the earth.
आवन्त्ये विषये जातो लोहितांगो धरासुतः
In the region of Avanti, the son of the earth was born with a red body.
नामभिर्ब्रह्मणा स्तुत्वा ग्रहमध्येऽधिरोपितः
Having praised him with names, Brahma placed him among the planets.
ब्रह्मणा स्थापितं लिंगं गणगंधर्वसेवितम्
The linga established by Brahma, attended by hosts and Gandharvas—
दृष्ट्वांगारेश्वरं सोथ मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
Seeing Aṅgāreśvara there, one is freed from all sins.
यावत्पूर्णाश्चतस्रः स्युस्तावत्कार्याः प्रयत्नतः
As long as all four are complete, so long should they be performed with effort.
गुडपीठमयाः कार्या रक्तवस्त्रसमन्विताः
They should be made of jaggery cakes, accompanied by red cloth.
तिलतण्डुलसंपूर्णमेकं तत्रैव कारयेत्
One should prepare one filled with sesame and rice right there.
उत्तरीभिश्चतुर्थं च पञ्चमं मूलकैस्तथा
The fourth and fifth should be made with northern roots likewise.
कुजाय लोहितांगाय ग्रहमघ्यस्थिताय च
For Kuja, for Lohitāṅga, and for the one situated among the planets—
शिवललाटसंभूत धरणीगर्भसंभव 5.1.37.
Born from Shiva's forehead, born from the womb of the earth—
ज्वलितांगारवर्णाभ स्निग्धविद्रुमभा सुर
O god, with a blazing coal-like hue and the luster of smooth coral—
आवन्त्यमण्डले जातो धरण्यां च शिवेन वै
Born in the region of Avanti, indeed upon the earth by Śiva.
एवं संपूजितो भौमश्चतुर्थ्यां मुनिसत्तम
Thus worshipped on the fourth day, O best of sages, the Bhauma (Mars).
मृतः स्वर्गमवाप्नोति यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
One who dies (then) attains heaven for as long as the fourteen Indras (reign).
चामुंडायास्ततो रक्तमभूदास्यं च भासुरम्
Then from Cāmuṇḍā, blood appeared, and her face shone brilliantly.
कृष्णं कृतांतकल्पांतं करालदशनाधरम्
Black, resembling the end of time, with fierce teeth and lips.
घोरघर्घरनिर्घोषस्फीतफेत्कारविस्वरम्
Terrible, with a roaring, thunderous voice, swelling with wild cries.
तस्मिन्मुखे कपालाग्रं निधाय रुषितानना
Upon that mouth, placing the tip of a skull, her face enraged.
तया पिबंत्या दैत्येंद्रः शरीरे कृशतां गतः
As she drank, the lord of the demons became emaciated in body.
इत्थं निर्वीर्यदेहोऽसौ बभूवांध कदानवः
Thus, his body rendered powerless, that Dānava became blind.
तीव्रं भयं समासाद्य प्राणत्राणपरायणः
Overcome by intense fear, he became intent solely on saving his life.
कृतांजलिपुटो भूत्वा रोमांचितशरीरकः
With hands joined in reverence, his body bristling with hair.
लोकानां कारणं देवं विबुधाधि पतिं प्रभुम्
He praised the god, the lord of the gods, the master, the cause of the worlds.
श्लाघ्यं शिवं च तुष्टाव देवं चंद्रार्धशेखरम् ।। 5.1.38.
He extolled the praiseworthy Śiva, the god adorned with the crescent moon.
संसारहेतुरपि यः पुनरंतकाले तं शंकरं शरणदं शरणं व्रजामि
He who is the cause of worldly existence, yet at the end of time grants refuge—I seek refuge in that Śaṃkara.
यं योगिनो विगतमोहतमोरजस्का भक्त्यैकतानमनसो विनिवृत्तकामाः
Whom yogis, free from delusion and darkness, with minds devoted in single-pointed devotion, and desires turned away, (attain).
यश्चंद्रखंडममलं विलसन्मयूखं बद्ध्वा सदा सुरसरिच्छिरसा बिभर्ति
Who always bears the pure crescent moon, shining with rays, bound upon his head with the celestial river.
