पुरा किल मुनिर्धीरो रैभ्यो नाम तपोधनः
Long ago, there was a wise sage named Raibhya, rich in austerity.
तत्तपो विपुलं दृष्ट्वा भीतः सुरपतिस्ततः
Seeing his great austerity, the lord of the gods became afraid.
ततः सा प्रेषिता तेनाजगाम गजगामिनी
Then, sent by him, she of the graceful gait arrived.
वनफुल्ललताकुञ्जे मञ्जुकूजद्विहंगमे
In a forest bower of blossoming creepers, where sweet-voiced birds sang,
पुन्नागकेशराशोकच्छिन्नकिजल्कपिंजरे 2.8.7.
Amidst cages woven from filaments of punnāga, keśara, and aśoka flowers,
सा बभौ कांतिसर्वस्वकोशः कुसुमधन्वनः
She shone as the very treasury of all charms for the god of love.
अंगप्रभासुवर्णेन सितमौक्तिकशोभिता
Adorned with white pearls, her limbs gleamed with golden radiance.
विलोमलोचनापांगतरंगधवलत्विषा
Her complexion was bright as the waves at the corners of her eyes, with lashes curving upward.
कर्णोपलम्बिसंघुष्यद्भृङ्गाढ्यचूतमञ्जरी
With mango blossoms heavy with bees buzzing near her earrings,
तनुमध्या पृथुश्रोणिर्वर्णोद्भिन्नपयोधरा
Slender at the waist, broad-hipped, and her breasts prominent in color,
अपश्यदाश्रमे तस्मिन्मुनिरायतलोचनाम्
The sage saw her, wide-eyed, in that hermitage.
त्रिनेत्रवंचनायैव कल्पितां ललनातनुम्
A woman's form was devised solely to deceive the three-eyed one.
विलोक्य तां विशालाक्षीं मुनिर्व्याकुलितेन्द्रियः
Seeing that large-eyed woman, the sage's senses became agitated.
समागता तपोविघ्नहेतवे मम सन्निधौ
She came into my presence as the cause of an obstacle to my austerities.
उवाच वनिता भूत्वा प्रांजलिर्मुनिमादरात् 2.8.7.
She spoke, having become a woman, with joined palms, respectfully to the sage.
त्वच्छापस्य कथं मुक्तिर्भविता नियतव्रत
How will liberation from your curse be attained, O steadfast in vows?
तत्र स्नानं कुरुष्वाद्य सौंदर्यं परमाप्नुहि
There, perform ablutions today and obtain supreme beauty.
त्वन्नाम्नैव च विख्यातिं तोयं यास्यति तद्ध्रुवम्
By your name alone, that water will surely become renowned.
सुन्दरी साऽभवत्क्षिप्रं तत्स्थानं ख्यातिमाययौ
She quickly became beautiful, and that place gained fame.
अत्र स्नानं मुनिश्रेष्ठ यः कुर्याद्विधिवज्जनः
O best of sages, whoever performs ablutions here according to the prescribed rite—
भाद्रे शुक्लतृतीयायां यात्रा सांवत्सरी भवेत्
O auspicious one, on the bright third lunar day, an annual pilgrimage should be made.
एवं कुर्वन्नरो विद्वान्विष्णुलोके वसेत्सदा
Thus acting, the wise man always dwells in the realm of Vishnu.
घोषार्ककुंडं परममुर्वशीकुंडदक्षिणे
The supreme Ghosharka pool lies to the south of Urvashi pool.
यत्र स्नानेन दानेन सूर्यलोके महीयते
Where, by bathing and giving, one is honored in the world of the sun.
व्रणी कुष्ठी दरिद्री वा दुःखाक्रांतोऽपि यो नरः 2.8.7.
Even a man afflicted by wounds, leprosy, poverty, or suffering—
रविवारे विशेषेण कर्त्तव्यं स्नानमादरात्
On Sunday especially, bathing should be performed with reverence.
कर्त्तव्यं विधिवत्स्नानं सूर्यलोकाभिकांक्षया
Bathing should be performed according to the rite, desiring the world of the sun.
सप्तम्यां रवियुक्तायां स्नानं बहुफलप्रदम्
On the seventh lunar day joined with the sun, bathing grants many rewards.
समुद्रमेखलामेकः पृथिवीं समपालयत्
He alone protected the earth, girdled by the ocean.
यः प्रतापात्स्फुरन्भाति प्रभाकर इवापरः
Who, by his splendor, shines forth like another sun.
