शतशः शकलीचक्रे तं च बाणैरताडयत् 5.1.36.
He shattered it into hundreds of pieces and struck it with arrows.
निरुद्धः शंभुना बाणैरलिभिः पंकजं यथा
Blocked by Śambhu's arrows, like a lotus by bees,
योधवरैर्हता दिव्यैः स्थाणु सान्निध्यमाश्रितैः
The foremost warriors were slain by divine beings who had taken refuge near Sthāṇu.
आत्मानं च महेशेन विद्धं च बाणकोटिभिः
And by Maheśa, he saw himself pierced by countless arrows.
चकार तामसीं मायां मायाशतविशारदः
Skilled in hundreds of illusions, he created a dark illusion.
शंभुर्भीतिभरं बिभ्रद्बभ्राम भुवि भिन्नहृत्
Śambhu, bearing the weight of fear, wandered the earth with a broken heart.
वदन्न दृश्यते क्वासौ गतो दुष्टः पुनःपुनः
Saying, 'Where is that wicked one gone? He is not seen,' again and again.
तत्र तीर्थमथोत्पन्नं वागंधकमभिश्रुतम्
There, a sacred ford arose, renowned as Vāgandhaka.
नवम्यां मार्गशीर्षस्य शुक्लायां श्रद्धयान्वितः
On the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Mārgaśīrṣa, with faith,
पितृनुद्दिश्य यत्किंचिद्दीयते भक्तितः शिवे
Whatever is offered with devotion to Śiva, dedicated to the ancestors,
तमसा च्छादिता देवाः संबभूवुः समाकुलाः 5.1.36.
The gods, covered by darkness, became greatly disturbed.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे व्यास नरादित्यः स्वतेजसा
Meanwhile, Vyāsa, the sun among men, by his own brilliance,
नष्टे तमसि दैत्येपि प्रकाश प्रकटे सति
When the darkness was destroyed and the demons were revealed in the light,
स्तुवंतो विविधैः स्तोत्रैर्नररूपं दिवाकरम्
They praised the sun in human form with various hymns.
तेनास्य नाम ते चकुर्नरदीप इतीश्वराः
Therefore, O sage, the lords gave it the name 'Naradīpa'.
मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो यद्यपि ब्रह्महा भवेत्
One is freed from all sins, even if he were a slayer of a Brahmin.
दिनच्छिद्रेथ संक्रांतौ ग्रहणे विषुवत्यथ
At the junction of the day, during solstices, eclipses, or the equinox,
नरदीपं नरः पश्येत्स्तोत्रवा दित्रमंगलैः
If a man beholds the Naradīpa, accompanied by hymns and auspicious songs,
गीतं वाद्यं पुरस्कृत्य प्रणम्याष्टांगमेव च
With singing and instrumental music in the forefront, and having bowed with eightfold prostration,
स मुक्तः सर्वपापैस्तु सप्तजन्मकृतैरपि
He is liberated from all sins, even those accumulated over seven births.
सूर्यलोकं प्रयात्याशु यत्सुरैरपि दुर्लभम् 5.1.36.
He quickly attains the world of the Sun, which is difficult even for the gods to reach.
नरेणैव प्रसादेन नरदीपस्ततो ह्ययम्
By the favor of a man alone, this Naradīpa has thus arisen.
आगमिष्याम्यहं पार्थ सार्धं देवैः समाहितः
I shall come there, O Pārtha, together with the gods, with full intent.
तत्राहमागतो ज्ञेयो लोके देवस्य वर्षणात्
There, I am to be known as having arrived in the world, by the descent of the god.
दृष्ट्वा देवं तथारूढं नरदीपं सुदीपितम्
Having seen the god thus mounted, the Naradīpa shining brilliantly,
यः पश्येन्मानवो भक्त्या नरदीपं रथस्थितम्
Whoever, with devotion, beholds the Naradīpa situated on the chariot,
रथयात्रामथो वक्ष्ये नरदीपस्य या मुने
Now I shall describe, O sage, the chariot procession of the Naradīpa.
ज्येष्ठे सिते द्वितीयायां रथस्थो हि दिवाकरः
On the bright second day of Jyeṣṭha, the Sun is indeed on the chariot.
उत्तरां दिशमायांतं यः पश्यति दिवस्पतिम्
Whoever sees the lord of the day proceeding towards the northern direction,
निवृत्य केशवार्काद्यो रथं पश्यति मानवः
And, turning back from Keśava and Arka, a man beholds the chariot,
