मत्वाग्निमिति ताः सर्वास्तपंति स्म यथेच्छया
Thinking it was fire, all of them performed penance there as they wished.
षडाननं समारूढं श्रोणिद्वारेण सत्वरम्
The six-faced one was swiftly born through the opening of the hip.
चिंतां जग्मुस्तदा सर्वा मुनित्रासात्ततो भयात्
Then, out of fear of the sages, all the women became anxious.
षड्भिरेकत्वमापद्य श्वेतपर्वतमस्तके
Becoming one with the six, he reached the summit of the White Mountain.
शुक्लायां प्रतिपद्यासीद्द्वितीयायां समीकृतः
On the first day of the bright fortnight, he appeared; on the second day, he was made complete.
चतुर्थ्यां परिपूर्णांगः षण्मुखो द्वादशेक्षणः
On the fourth day, with all limbs perfected, the six-faced one, possessing twelve eyes, was manifest.
तेजसा श्वेतताम्रेण तताप स जगत्त्रयम्
With his radiant white and coppery brilliance, he illuminated the three worlds.
समागत्यास्य संस्कारं ब्रह्मा चक्रे यथाविधि 5.1.34.
Having gathered together, Brahma performed his consecration according to the prescribed rites.
ततो गौर्या मयूरश्च वाहने परिकल्पितः
Then, by Gauri, the peacock was appointed as his vehicle.
शूलेन कृत्तिकाभिश्च वर्धितः पुत्रकाम्यया
With the spear and by the Krittikas, he was nurtured out of desire for a son.
शक्तिहस्तोऽभिषिक्तस्तु देवसेनासमादृतः
Holding the spear, he was anointed and honored by the army of the gods.
गांगेयः कार्तिकेयश्च गुहः स्कंद उमासुतः
He is called Gangeya, Kartikeya, Guha, Skanda, and the son of Uma.
कुमारः शक्तिधारी च तस्य नामानि षोडश
Kumara, bearer of the spear—these are among his sixteen names.
एवं जातो महासेनो दानवानां क्षयकरः
Thus was born Mahasena, the destroyer of the demons.
अभिषिक्तः स तेनासौ भद्रितः स जटाः पुरा
He was consecrated, adorned, and his matted locks were arranged in ancient times.
कृताभिषेकं लब्धास्त्रं महासेनं महेश्वरः
Having received consecration and weapons, Maheshvara gave Mahasena.
रक्षा कार्या त्वया पुत्र सामरस्य शतक्रतोः
You must protect, O son, the cause of harmony for Indra.
इत्थं महोत्सवे जाते दृप्तप्रमथसागरे 5.1.34.
Thus, when the great festival arose in the ocean of proud attendants,
तासामाहारसंज्ञाभिश्चक्रे नामानि शंकरः
Shankara assigned names to them according to their food designations.
वटभोजनकामा या ज्ञेयास्ता वटमातरः
Those who desire the banyan fruit are to be known as the mothers of the banyan.
क्रीडार्थं शंभुना चाथ प्राप्ता याः पौलभोजने
Those who, for play, were obtained by Shambhu for the consumption of Paulas,
सर्वासां दर्शनं पुण्यं ग्रहभूतविनाशनम्
The sight of all of them is auspicious and destroys the influence of malignant beings.
लब्ध्वा शक्तिं महासेनो देवसेनो महाव्रतः
Having obtained the spear, Mahāsena, the great vow-holder, the commander of the gods,
दत्त्वा राज्यं तथेंद्राय स्फीतं निहतकंटकम्
Having given the prosperous kingdom, cleared of thorns, to Indra,
एवं निहत्य दैत्येंद्रं स गांगेयो महाब लः
Thus, having slain the lord of the demons, that mighty son of the Ganges,
ततो भोगवती व्यास शक्तिभेदेन निर्गता
Then, O Vyāsa, Bhogavatī emerged, split by the spear,
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि समुद्रादिगतानि च
All the sacred places on earth and those found in the oceans,
अतोऽतिपुण्यं त्रैलोक्ये कोटितीर्थमुदाहृतम् 5.1.34.
Therefore, in the three worlds, Koṭitīrtha is declared supremely holy.
कोटितीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा कोटीश्वरं शिवम्
One who bathes at Koṭitīrtha and beholds Koṭīśvara Śiva,
श्राद्धं करोति यस्तत्र पितृभक्तो नरो मुने
A man devoted to his ancestors, O sage, who performs śrāddha there,
