इति दत्त्वा वरांस्तस्मै विश्वामित्रो मुनीश्वरः
Thus, having granted him boons, the great sage Vishvamitra—
तदाप्रभृति तत्स्थानं परमां ख्यातिमाययौ
From that time onward, that place attained supreme renown.
दिव्यरत्नौघखचिता समंतादुपशोभिता
Adorned on all sides with clusters of divine jewels, it shone brilliantly.
धनयक्षादुत्तरस्मिन्दिग्भागे संस्थितं द्विज
To the north of the abode of the Yaksha of wealth, in that direction, O twice-born—
वसिष्ठस्य सदा तत्र निवासः सुतपोनिधेः 2.8.7.
There, the ever-resident sage Vasishtha, a treasure-house of austerity, dwells.
अत्र स्नानं विशेषेण श्राद्धपूर्वमतंद्रितः
Here, one should especially bathe, with unwavering attention, after performing the Śrāddha.
वामदेवस्य तत्रैव संनिधिर्वर्ततेऽनघ
There, the presence of Vāmadeva is found, O sinless one.
पतिव्रता पूजनीयाऽरुन्धती च विशेषतः
The devoted wife, Arundhati, is especially worthy of worship there.
सर्वकामफलप्राप्तिर्जायते नात्र संशयः
The attainment of all desired fruits arises here—of this there is no doubt.
भाद्रे मासि सिते पक्षे पंचम्यां नियतव्रतः
In the month of Bhādra, on the fifth day of the bright fortnight, with steadfast observance—
विष्णुपूजा प्रयत्नेन कर्तव्या श्रद्धयात्र वै
Here, worship of Vishnu must be performed with care and faith.
वसिष्ठकुण्डाद्विप्रेंद्र प्रत्यग्दिग्दलमाश्रितम् यत्र स्नानेन दानेन सर्वकामानवाप्नुयात्
At Vasishtha's pool, O best of Brahmins, situated in the eastern quarter—where, by bathing and giving, one attains all desires.
पौर्णमास्यां समुद्रस्य स्नानाद्यत्पुण्यमाप्नुयात्
On the full moon, the merit gained by bathing in the ocean—
तस्मादत्र विधानेन स्नातव्यं पुत्रकांक्षया
Therefore, here, one should bathe according to the prescribed method, desiring a son.
एवं कुर्वन्नरो विद्वान्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते 2.8.7.
Thus, a wise man who acts in this way is freed from all sins.
सागरान्नैर्ऋते भागे योगिनीकुण्डमुत्तमम्
In the southwest quarter from the ocean is the excellent Yoginī pool.
सर्वार्थसिद्धिदाः पुंसां स्त्रीणां चैव विशेषतः
They grant the fulfillment of all aims for people, and especially for women.
आश्विने शुक्लपक्षस्य अष्टम्यां च विशेषतः
Especially on the eighth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Āśvina.
अत्र स्नानं तथा दानं सर्वं सफलतां व्रजेत्
Here, bathing and giving gifts all become fruitful.
योगिनीकुंडतः पूर्वमुर्वशीकुण्डमुत्तमम्
Before the Yoginī Lake lies the excellent Urvaśī Lake.
पुरा किल मुनिर्धीरो रैभ्यो नाम तपोधनः
Long ago, there was a wise sage named Raibhya, rich in austerity.
तत्तपो विपुलं दृष्ट्वा भीतः सुरपतिस्ततः
Seeing his great austerity, the lord of the gods became afraid.
ततः सा प्रेषिता तेनाजगाम गजगामिनी
Then, sent by him, she of the graceful gait arrived.
वनफुल्ललताकुञ्जे मञ्जुकूजद्विहंगमे
In a forest bower of blossoming creepers, where sweet-voiced birds sang,
पुन्नागकेशराशोकच्छिन्नकिजल्कपिंजरे 2.8.7.
Amidst cages woven from filaments of punnāga, keśara, and aśoka flowers,
सा बभौ कांतिसर्वस्वकोशः कुसुमधन्वनः
She shone as the very treasury of all charms for the god of love.
अंगप्रभासुवर्णेन सितमौक्तिकशोभिता
Adorned with white pearls, her limbs gleamed with golden radiance.
विलोमलोचनापांगतरंगधवलत्विषा
Her complexion was bright as the waves at the corners of her eyes, with lashes curving upward.
कर्णोपलम्बिसंघुष्यद्भृङ्गाढ्यचूतमञ्जरी
With mango blossoms heavy with bees buzzing near her earrings,
तनुमध्या पृथुश्रोणिर्वर्णोद्भिन्नपयोधरा
Slender at the waist, broad-hipped, and her breasts prominent in color,
