देवीं योगीश्वरीं पूज्य सुरासुरनमस्कृताम्
He should worship the goddess, the mistress of yoga, who is revered by gods and demons.
शंखावर्ते नरः स्नात्वा सर्वपापविवर्जितः
A man who bathes at Śaṅkhāvarta becomes free from all sins.
सुधोदके चतुर्दश्यां मुक्त्यर्थं स्नापयेन्नरः
On the fourteenth day, a man should bathe for the sake of liberation in pure water.
तथान्य त्संप्रवक्ष्यामि तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्
Now I shall further describe another sacred place, renowned throughout the three worlds.
पूर्वं त्रेतायुगे व्यास सुनेत्रो नाम वै द्विजः
Formerly, in the Tretā Yuga, there was a brahmin named Sunetra, O Vyāsa.
यवक्रीतस्य शापेन स्वपिता तेन घातितः
By the curse of Yavakrīta, his own father was slain by him.
तीर्थे किंपुनके स्नात्वा धारातीर्थे गतो द्विजः
Having bathed at the sacred place Kiṃpunaka, the brahmin went to the holy Dhārā.
कथं मे पतिता धारा अनृता वा श्रुतिस्तथा
"How has my stream become fallen, or how has my recitation become false?"
अत्र तीर्थे पुनः स्नाति यावद्वाणीं ततोऽशृणोत् 5.1.31.
There, bathing again at that sacred place, he heard a voice.
न तेऽस्ति ब्रह्महत्या वै तीर्थस्नानेन नाशिता
"You are not afflicted by brahminicide; it has been destroyed by bathing at the sacred place."
तत्र स्थित्वा महेशेन पुनः पत्तनमीक्षितम्
There, having remained, the great lord again beheld the city.
पत्तनेश्वर इत्याख्यो देवदेवो महेश्वरः
The god of gods, Maheśvara, is known there as Pattaneśvara.
भावयुक्तो नरो व्यास पूजयेद्विधिवत्सदा
A man endowed with devotion, O Vyāsa, should always worship him properly.
हंसयुक्तेन यानेन शिवलोकं स गच्छति
He goes to the world of Śiva in a vehicle drawn by swans.
दुर्धर्षमिति विख्यातं ब्रह्महत्याविमोचनम्
It is famed as Durdharṣa, the liberator from the sin of brahminicide.
तीर्थमासीन्नदीतीरे विख्यातं सूर्यसंस्कृतम्
That sacred place, situated on the riverbank, is renowned as purified by the Sun.
सप्तम्यामथवाष्टम्यां संक्रातौ रविवासरे
On the seventh or eighth day, or at the time of the solar transition, on a Sunday,
दृष्ट्वा महेश्वरं तत्र शिप्राकूले व्यवस्थितम्
having seen Maheshvara there, established on the bank of the Shipra,
पितृमातृकुलं सर्वं समुद्धृत्य शिवं व्रजेत् 5.1.31.
having uplifted his entire lineage of ancestors and mothers, he should approach Shiva.
तावत्तदक्षयं लोके यावच्चंद्रदिवाकरौ
That merit remains imperishable in the world as long as the moon and sun endure.
गौतमेन पुरा यत्र इन्द्रः शापाद्भ गीकृतः
There, in ancient times, Indra was afflicted by a curse from Gautama.
अतोषयत्तदोग्रेण तपसा शंकरं पुरा
Long ago, he satisfied Shankara with fierce austerity.
गोसहस्रीकृतास्तेन गोपींद्रस्तेन कथ्यते
By him, a thousand cows were given; therefore, he is called the lord of cows.
ये मृतास्ते पुनर्जन्म नाप्नुवंति महीतले
Those who have died do not obtain rebirth on earth.
ज्येष्ठशुक्लदशम्यां तु गंगायां फलमादिशेत्
On the bright tenth day of Jyeshtha, one should declare the fruit at the Ganga.
पुष्पकेन विमानेन प्रयातो दिवि मोदते
Departing in a celestial chariot, he delights in heaven.
इष्टभोगसमापन्नो याति स्वर्गं न संशयः
Having attained the enjoyment of desired pleasures, he goes to heaven without doubt.
गंधपुष्पादिनैवेद्यैर्मृतो रुद्रपुरं व्रजेत्
If one dies with offerings of fragrance, flowers, and food, he goes to Rudra's city.
अंबालिकां च यः पश्येत्समाधिनियमेन च ।। 5.1.31.
And whoever beholds Ambalika with the discipline of meditation,
स मुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यः कंचुकेन फणी यथा
he is freed from all sins, just as a serpent from its slough.
