अधोमुखश्चास्थिभंगो यंत्रपीडनकस्तथा
Adhomukha, Āsthibhaṅga, and also Yaṃtrapīḍana—
इत्येवमादयः सर्वे नरका भृशदारुणाः
All these and others like them are hells, exceedingly terrible.
पतंति पुरुषास्तेषु पापकर्मरताश्च ये 5.1.29.
Men who delight in sinful deeds fall into these.
यातनाभिर्विचित्राभी रौद्रकर्म क्षयाद्भृशम्
There, through various and dreadful torments, their wicked actions are exhausted.
महावृक्षाग्रशृंगेषु लंब्यंते यमकिंकरैः
They are hung by the servants of Yama on the tips of great trees.
अग्निवर्णैः शंकुभिश्च लोहदंडैः सकंटकैः
With iron spikes glowing like fire, and rods with thorns,
तत्तत्क्षणात्प्रदीप्तेन वह्निना च विशेषतः
And especially with blazing fire at every moment.
कूटसाक्षी तथाऽसम्यक्पक्षपातेन यो वदेत्
He who gives false testimony, or speaks with partiality,
सुरापो ब्रह्महा हर्ता सुवर्णस्य च सूचकः
A drinker of liquor, a slayer of a Brahmin, a thief, and one who informs against gold,
भ्रूणहा गुरुहंता च गोघ्नश्च मुनिसत्तम
A destroyer of embryos, a killer of a teacher, a slayer of cows, O best of sages,
तप्तलोष्ठेषु पच्यंते यस्तु भक्तं परित्यजेत्
Are cooked on heated iron, as is one who abandons food that has been offered.
कुंभीपाके प्रयात्येव पादैरूर्ध्वैरधोमुखः
He goes to Kuṃbhīpāka, head downward, with feet upward.
स्वामिद्रोही च यो रौद्रस्तप्तकुंभे स पात्यते 5.1.29.
And he who betrays his master, that fierce one, is cast into a blazing pot.
परस्त्रीगामिनो ये च यांति क्रकचने तु ते
Those who go to other men's wives enter Krakacana.
देवद्विजपितृद्वेष्टा रत्नदूषयिता च यः
He who hates gods, twice-born, or ancestors, or who defiles gems,
पितृदेवगुरूणां च सपर्यां न करोति यः
And he who does not perform service to fathers, gods, or teachers—
अंत्यजेभ्यो ग्रहीता च नरके यात्यधोमुखे
One who accepts from outcastes goes headfirst into hell.
कृतघ्नः पिशुनः क्रूरः कूटमानी विडंबकः
An ungrateful person, a slanderer, a cruel man, a false measurer, and a deceiver—
लाक्षामांसरसानां च तिलानां रसकस्य च
—and those who consume lac, meat, broths, sesame, and intoxicating drinks—
मधुहा ग्रामहंता च याति वैतरणीं नरः
A honey thief and a destroyer of villages, such a man goes to the Vaitaraṇī river.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा महानद्यां प्रयांति ते
By deed, thought, or word, they proceed to the great river.
असिपत्रे प्रयात्येव तथा पर्वविलंघकः
And one who crosses mountains unlawfully surely goes to the sword-leaf forest.
ते यांति नरके घोरे कृष्णसूत्रेऽतिदारुणे 5.1.29.
They go to the dreadful hell called Kṛṣṇasūtra, exceedingly terrible.
वृषलीमिथुनो यश्च पततस्तावुभावपि
And whoever has intercourse with an outcaste woman, both fall into hell.
ते पच्यंते कुभोज्ये च मित्र द्वेषी विशेषतः
They are cooked in foul food, especially the one who hates a friend.
पुत्रैरध्यापिता ये तै ते पतंति श्वभोजने
Those who are taught by their own sons fall into the food of dogs.
तत्र दुष्कृतकर्माणः पच्यंते यातनागताः
There, the evildoers who have come to torment are cooked.
पापं कृत्वा तु बहुलं प्रायश्चित्तपराङ्मुखाः
Having committed much sin and turning away from atonement—
प्रायश्चित्तं तु तस्यैकं शिवसंस्मरणं परम्
The supreme atonement for him is the remembrance of Śiva.
न याति नरकं शुद्धः संक्षीणाखिलपातकः तस्यां दीपः प्रदातव्यो देवदेवस्य चाग्रतः
He who is purified, whose all sins are destroyed, does not go to hell; for him, a lamp should be offered before the Lord of gods.
