उत्ससर्ज ततस्तारा कुमारं देवरूपिणम् 5.1.28.
Then Tārā released the child, who had the form of a god.
स तेजो जातमात्रोऽपि देवानामाक्षिपच्छिशुः
Though only just born, that radiant boy overwhelmed the gods.
कस्यायं ब्रूहि सुभगे सोमस्याथ बृहस्पतेः
O fortunate one, tell us—whose child is this? Is he Soma's or Bṛhaspati's?
यदत्र सत्यं तद्ब्रूहि तारे कस्य सुतो ह्ययम्
Tārā, speak the truth about this—whose son is he?
सोमस्येति रहः सोऽयं कुमारो देवसंनिभः
He is Soma's—this is the secret; this boy, resembling a god.
बुध इत्यकरोन्नाम तस्य पुत्रस्य वै तदा
Then he was named Budha, that son of his.
तेन सोमोऽभवत्कुष्ठी क्षयरोगयुतस्तदा
Because of this, Soma became afflicted with leprosy and consumption.
अवन्तीमाजगामाशु सोमो देवदिदृक्षया
Longing to see the gods, Soma quickly went to Avantī.
स्नात्वा संपूजयामास सोमः सोमेश्वरं ततः
After bathing, Soma worshipped Someśvara there.
मत्प्रसादाद्वपुः कांतं तव सोम भविष्यति
By my grace, Soma, your form will become beautiful.
एवं व्यास तु तत्तीर्थं लिंगं चैवाति दुर्लभम् 5.1.28.
Thus, Vyāsa, that holy place and the liṅga there are very difficult to obtain.
श्रावणं प्राप्य यो मासं सोमनाथं जितेंद्रियः
Whoever, with controlled senses, reaches Somanātha in the month of Śrāvaṇa—
सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथस्य पूजायाः प्रत्यहं फलम्
In Saurāṣṭra, the daily fruit of worshipping Somanātha—
तीर्थे चानरके स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा देवं महेश्वरम्
Having bathed at the holy place called Anaraka and seen the great god Maheśvara—
पतन्ति केन पापेन पापिनस्तेषु दुःखिताः
By what sin do those sinful and suffering ones fall there?
तत्कथं प्राणिनस्तत्र गच्छन्ति पापकारिणः
How do living beings who commit evil deeds go there?
सनत्कुमार उवाच शृणुष्व नरकान्व्यास तावन्तो यत्र संस्थिताः
Sanatkumāra said: Hear, Vyāsa, of the hells—so many are established there.
पातालनि लयाः सर्वे विख्याता दुःखदाः सदा
All are known as the lower worlds, always famous as givers of suffering.
रौरवः सूकरो रौद्रस्तालो विनशकस्तथा
Raurava, Sūkara, Raudra, Tāla, and Vinaśaka—
कुंभीपाकः क्रकचनस्तथा देवातिदारुणः
Kuṃbhīpāka, Krakacana, and also Deva-Atidāruṇa—
अधोमुखश्चास्थिभंगो यंत्रपीडनकस्तथा
Adhomukha, Āsthibhaṅga, and also Yaṃtrapīḍana—
इत्येवमादयः सर्वे नरका भृशदारुणाः
All these and others like them are hells, exceedingly terrible.
पतंति पुरुषास्तेषु पापकर्मरताश्च ये 5.1.29.
Men who delight in sinful deeds fall into these.
यातनाभिर्विचित्राभी रौद्रकर्म क्षयाद्भृशम्
There, through various and dreadful torments, their wicked actions are exhausted.
महावृक्षाग्रशृंगेषु लंब्यंते यमकिंकरैः
They are hung by the servants of Yama on the tips of great trees.
अग्निवर्णैः शंकुभिश्च लोहदंडैः सकंटकैः
With iron spikes glowing like fire, and rods with thorns,
तत्तत्क्षणात्प्रदीप्तेन वह्निना च विशेषतः
And especially with blazing fire at every moment.
कूटसाक्षी तथाऽसम्यक्पक्षपातेन यो वदेत्
He who gives false testimony, or speaks with partiality,
सुरापो ब्रह्महा हर्ता सुवर्णस्य च सूचकः
A drinker of liquor, a slayer of a Brahmin, a thief, and one who informs against gold,
भ्रूणहा गुरुहंता च गोघ्नश्च मुनिसत्तम
A destroyer of embryos, a killer of a teacher, a slayer of cows, O best of sages,
