प्राप्यावभृथमव्यग्रः सर्वदेवर्षिपूजितः 5.1.28.
Having performed the Avabhṛtha bath without agitation, he was honored by all the gods and sages.
तस्य तत्प्राप्य दुष्प्राप्यमैश्वर्यमृषिसंस्कृतम्
Having attained that difficult-to-obtain sovereignty, sanctified by the sages,
बृहस्पतेस्तदा भार्यां तारानाम्नीं यशस्विनीम्
At that time, Bṛhaspati's wife, renowned and named Tārā,
वाच्यमानस्तदा सोमो देवदेवर्षिभिस्तथा
Then Soma was addressed by the gods and sages regarding her.
बृहस्पतेस्ततः पक्षं शक्रो जग्राह कोपतः
Then Indra, out of anger, took the side of Bṛhaspati.
ततो युद्धमभूत्तत्र सुघोरं शक्रसोमयोः
Then a fierce battle occurred there between Indra and Soma.
सर्वे भीतास्ततो देवा ब्रह्माणं शरणं गताः
Then all the gods, being afraid, took refuge with Brahmā.
देवानां वचनं श्रुत्वा सार्द्धं देवैः पितामहः
Hearing the words of the gods, the Grandsire went together with them.
वारितास्ते स्थितास्तत्र युद्धं त्यक्त्वा सुरासुराः
Restrained by him, the gods and asuras stood there, abandoning the battle.
तामंतःप्रसवां दृष्ट्वा प्राह भार्यां बृहस्पतिः
Seeing his wife pregnant, Bṛhaspati spoke to her.
उत्ससर्ज ततस्तारा कुमारं देवरूपिणम् 5.1.28.
Then Tārā released the child, who had the form of a god.
स तेजो जातमात्रोऽपि देवानामाक्षिपच्छिशुः
Though only just born, that radiant boy overwhelmed the gods.
कस्यायं ब्रूहि सुभगे सोमस्याथ बृहस्पतेः
O fortunate one, tell us—whose child is this? Is he Soma's or Bṛhaspati's?
यदत्र सत्यं तद्ब्रूहि तारे कस्य सुतो ह्ययम्
Tārā, speak the truth about this—whose son is he?
सोमस्येति रहः सोऽयं कुमारो देवसंनिभः
He is Soma's—this is the secret; this boy, resembling a god.
बुध इत्यकरोन्नाम तस्य पुत्रस्य वै तदा
Then he was named Budha, that son of his.
तेन सोमोऽभवत्कुष्ठी क्षयरोगयुतस्तदा
Because of this, Soma became afflicted with leprosy and consumption.
अवन्तीमाजगामाशु सोमो देवदिदृक्षया
Longing to see the gods, Soma quickly went to Avantī.
स्नात्वा संपूजयामास सोमः सोमेश्वरं ततः
After bathing, Soma worshipped Someśvara there.
मत्प्रसादाद्वपुः कांतं तव सोम भविष्यति
By my grace, Soma, your form will become beautiful.
एवं व्यास तु तत्तीर्थं लिंगं चैवाति दुर्लभम् 5.1.28.
Thus, Vyāsa, that holy place and the liṅga there are very difficult to obtain.
श्रावणं प्राप्य यो मासं सोमनाथं जितेंद्रियः
Whoever, with controlled senses, reaches Somanātha in the month of Śrāvaṇa—
सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथस्य पूजायाः प्रत्यहं फलम्
In Saurāṣṭra, the daily fruit of worshipping Somanātha—
तीर्थे चानरके स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा देवं महेश्वरम्
Having bathed at the holy place called Anaraka and seen the great god Maheśvara—
पतन्ति केन पापेन पापिनस्तेषु दुःखिताः
By what sin do those sinful and suffering ones fall there?
तत्कथं प्राणिनस्तत्र गच्छन्ति पापकारिणः
How do living beings who commit evil deeds go there?
सनत्कुमार उवाच शृणुष्व नरकान्व्यास तावन्तो यत्र संस्थिताः
Sanatkumāra said: Hear, Vyāsa, of the hells—so many are established there.
पातालनि लयाः सर्वे विख्याता दुःखदाः सदा
All are known as the lower worlds, always famous as givers of suffering.
रौरवः सूकरो रौद्रस्तालो विनशकस्तथा
Raurava, Sūkara, Raudra, Tāla, and Vinaśaka—
कुंभीपाकः क्रकचनस्तथा देवातिदारुणः
Kuṃbhīpāka, Krakacana, and also Deva-Atidāruṇa—
