I tell you truly how this linga of Someshvara came to be.
The god, the blessed Soma, is the supreme nourisher of the world.
And in Avanti, the great and fortunate sage named Atri, a treasury of austerity—

He, with arms raised, practiced austerity, devoted to meditation on Brahman.
From his eyes it flowed, illuminating the ten directions.
And, Vyasa, when the directions could no longer contain it,
As it illumined all the worlds, it fell upon the earth.
The water that arose from Soma, Vyasa, was by that very radiance.
Thus the river Shipra, like Soma, became renowned as the giver of all success.
She is famed in the three worlds as the bestower of merit even to sinners.
Even four people here are certainly freed from sin by merely beholding her.
Whoever, wise, performs bathing, giving, recitation, or sacrifice there,
By offering sesame-water and funeral cakes,
Everywhere Shipra is rare, as is Soma and the Soma vessel.
The water of Shipra and Soma, Vyasa, grants the fruit of a crore of sacred fords.
If on a new moon day, a Monday coincides with Vyatipata,
Thus, O great sage, the holy place of Somavati arose here.
He was placed upon a chariot, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
Yoked with a thousand steeds, he was then impelled by Brahma.
All, delighted and composed, praised him with all their hearts.
As he pervaded the three worlds, he descended to the earth.
Seventy-seven times he exceedingly circled the ocean.
Then those very divine herbs arose on earth, pure and immaculate.
Thereafter, the blessed Soma, always satisfied, O sage, with the world,
Then Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds, gave him a command.
To Soma, he gave the twenty-seven daughters of Dakṣa, steadfast in great vows.
Having obtained that great kingdom, Soma was then surrounded by his wives.
The revered Atri was the Hotṛ priest, and the blessed Bhṛgu was the Adhvaryu.
The revered Viṣṇu was the Sadasya, accompanied by Sanaka and the others.
Sinīvālī, Kuhū, Dhṛti, Puṣṭi, Prabhā, and Vasu were present.
