तस्यां स्नात्वा शुचिर्भूत्वा पश्येत्पशुपतिं तु यः
Whoever bathes there, becomes pure, and beholds Pashupati—
सुवर्णमणिमुक्ताद्यैर्विमानैः सर्वकामगैः 5.1.28.
With palaces made of gold, jewels, pearls, and all desired pleasures—
रूपकुंडे नरः स्नात्वा सुरूपो जायतेनरः
A man who bathes in the pond of beauty becomes handsome.
कुंडे स्नात्वाप्यनंगे यः शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहितः कामं स लभतेऽभीष्टं मृतो याति शिवालयम्
Whoever bathes in the pond of love, becomes pure and focused, attains the desired pleasure, and after death goes to Shiva's abode.
आषाढे तु सिताष्टम्यां जागरं यस्तु कारयेत्
On the bright eighth day of Ashadha, whoever performs a vigil—
करीकुंडे नरः स्नात्वा विश्वरूपं तु योऽर्चयेत्
A man who bathes in the elephant pond and worships the universal form—
अजागंधे नरः स्नात्वा दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मेश्वरं शिवम्
A man who bathes in the goat-scented pond and beholds Brahmeshvara Shiva—
चक्रतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा चक्र स्वामिनमर्चयेत् ४६. कामिकेन विमानेन रुद्रलोकं स गच्छति
A man who bathes at the Chakra tirtha and worships the lord of the chakra, attains the world of Rudra in a desired palace.
सोमवन्निर्मलो भूत्वा सोमलोके स मोदते
Becoming pure like Soma, he delights in the world of Soma.
अभूदेतत्कथं नाम श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
How did this happen? I wish to hear the truth of it.
सोमेश्वरं यथा लिंगमेतत्सत्यं वदामि ते ।।5.1.28.
I tell you truly how this linga of Someshvara came to be.
यो देवो भगवान्सोमो लोकस्याप्यायनं परम्
The god, the blessed Soma, is the supreme nourisher of the world.
अवन्त्यां च महाभागो योऽत्रिर्नामा तपोनिधिः
And in Avanti, the great and fortunate sage named Atri, a treasury of austerity—

He, with arms raised, practiced austerity, devoted to meditation on Brahman.
नेत्राभ्यां तेन सुस्राव भासयच्च दिशो दश
From his eyes it flowed, illuminating the ten directions.
दिशश्च तद्यदा व्यास सर्वा धर्तुं न चाशकन्
And, Vyasa, when the directions could no longer contain it,
लोकांश्च भासयत्सर्वान्धरण्यां वै पपात ह
As it illumined all the worlds, it fell upon the earth.
वारि सोमात्समुत्पन्नं व्यास तेनैव तेजसा
The water that arose from Soma, Vyasa, was by that very radiance.
ततः सोमवती शिप्रा विख्याता सर्वसि द्धिदा
Thus the river Shipra, like Soma, became renowned as the giver of all success.
ख्याता च त्रिषु लोकेषु पापिनां पुण्यदायिनी
She is famed in the three worlds as the bestower of merit even to sinners.
चत्वारोऽप्यत्र पापेन मुच्यंते दर्शनाद्ध्रुवम् 5.1.28.
Even four people here are certainly freed from sin by merely beholding her.
स्नानं दानं च यो धीमाञ्जपं होमं समाचरेत्
Whoever, wise, performs bathing, giving, recitation, or sacrifice there,
तिलोदकप्रदानेन पिंडदानेन कारिता
By offering sesame-water and funeral cakes,
सर्वत्र दुर्लभा सिप्रा सोमं सोमग्रहस्तथा
Everywhere Shipra is rare, as is Soma and the Soma vessel.
शिप्रासोमजलं व्यास कोटितीर्थफलप्रदम्
The water of Shipra and Soma, Vyasa, grants the fruit of a crore of sacred fords.
अमायां सोमवारश्चेद्व्यतीपातो यदा भवेत्
If on a new moon day, a Monday coincides with Vyatipata,
एवं सोमवतीतीर्थं जातमत्र महामुने
Thus, O great sage, the holy place of Somavati arose here.
रथे तं स्थापयामास लोकानां हितकाम्यया
He was placed upon a chariot, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
युक्तो वाजिसहस्रेण ब्रह्मणा प्रेरितस्तदा
Yoked with a thousand steeds, he was then impelled by Brahma.
तुष्टुवुः सर्वभावेन हृष्टाः सर्वे समाहिताः
All, delighted and composed, praised him with all their hearts.
