देवैः पृष्टस्ततो ब्रह्मा क्वास्ति देवो महेश्वरः
Then Brahmā, questioned by the gods, asked, 'Where is the great god Maheśvara?'
देवैः सार्धं ततो ब्रह्मा पप्रच्छ गणनायकम् 5.1.28.
Then Brahmā, together with the gods, questioned the leader of the Gaṇas.
कथयस्व नमस्तुभ्यं दास्यामो लड्डुकान्विभो
Tell us, we bow to you; we will give you sweet balls, O mighty one.
करभोऽयं महाऽदेवो दृश्यते विबुधो त्तमाः
This young elephant is the great god, seen by the best of the wise.
ज्ञातोऽस्माभिर्महादेव जल्पंत इति ते स्वयम्
We ourselves have recognized the great god, for he is speaking.
विचिंत्येति कथं ज्ञातः शंकरो विस्मयं गतः
Thinking thus, 'How was he known?' Śaṅkara was amazed.
लिंगमुत्पादयामास दिव्यं यत्करभे श्वरम्
He produced a divine liṅga there, called Karabheśvara.
ततःप्रभृति विख्यातः शंकरः करभेश्वरः
From that time onward, Śaṅkara became renowned as Karabheśvara.
स्वनाम्ना प्रथितं चक्रे करभं चातिपूजितम्
He established the elephant, renowned by its own name, and highly revered.
गंधपुष्पैश्च नैवेद्यैः शृणु तेषां च यत्फलम्
With fragrant flowers and offerings of food, listen now to the result for them.
ततोऽधिकं स लभते नात्र कार्या विचारणा
He attains even greater benefit; there is no need for doubt in this matter.
ततः प्रसिद्धो लोकेऽस्मिन्नृद्धिदः करभेश्वरः ।। 5.1.28.
Thus, Karabheśvara became famous in this world as the bestower of prosperity.
सनत्कुमार उवाच लइडुकैश्च ततो देवैर्विघ्ननाथः समर्चितः
Sanatkumāra said: Then, Vighnanātha was worshipped by the gods with sweet balls.
यः समर्चयते भक्त्या तस्य विघ्नो न जायते
Whoever worships him with devotion, for that person no obstacle arises.
निराहारश्चतुर्थ्यां च स्नात्वा शिप्रां विशेषतः
Fasting on the fourth day, having bathed especially in the Śiprā river,
रक्तचंदनतोयेन मंत्रैः स्नपनपूर्वकम्
With water mixed with red sandalwood, preceded by recitation of mantras,
धूपं दद्यात्तथा दिव्यं सुगंधं लड्डुकप्रिये
He should offer divine incense, fragrant and pleasing to the lover of sweet balls.
न तस्य जायते व्याधिर्भयं विघ्नं कदाचन
For him, disease, fear, or obstacles never arise at any time.
अवतीर्णः पुनर्लोके जायते वसुधाधिपः
Descending again to the world, he is born as a ruler of the earth.
श्रद्धया पूजयेद्यस्तु शिवलोके स मोदते
Whoever worships with faith rejoices in the realm of Śiva.
जयेश्वरं तु यः पश्येद्देवदेवं महेश्वरम्
Whoever beholds Jayeśvara, the god of gods, the great lord,
शिवद्वारे शिवं लिंगमर्चयेन्मानवो यदि 5.1.28.
If a person worships the Śiva liṅga at the gate of Śiva,
अथान्यं संप्रवक्ष्यामि मार्कंडेश्वरमुत्तमम्
Now I shall describe another, the supreme Mārkaṇḍeśvara.
दृष्ट्वा तं शंकरं देवं वाजपेयफलं लभेत्
Seeing that god Śaṃkara, one obtains the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice.
शृणु व्यास महास्थानं यस्यां पुर्यामनुत्तमम्
Hear, Vyāsa, of the great place, the most excellent in that city.
भक्तानां पूरयेदाशां पुत्रवत्परिपालयेत्
He fulfills the wishes of devotees and protects them as a father does his son.
अर्चिता ब्रह्मणा सा तु स्तुता देवी सुरोत्तमैः अपि या ब्रह्मणः पूर्वमभूदेव सुसिद्धिदा
She was worshipped by Brahma and praised by the best of the gods; even before Brahma, she existed, granting perfect accomplishments.
यः स्नात्वा ब्रह्मसरसि पश्ये द्ब्रह्मेश्वरं शिवम्
Whoever, after bathing in the Brahma lake, beholds Brahmeshvara Shiva—
अथान्यां संप्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ञवापीमनुत्तमाम्
Now I will describe another, the supreme sacrificial pond.
यज्ञार्थं यत्कृतं कुंडं यज्ञवापी च सा स्मृता
The pit created for sacrifice is remembered as the sacrificial pond.
