शिष्यैस्तु सहितो विप्रो महाकालवनेऽविशत् ।। शिष्यैः सह प्रविष्टौ द्वौ तदा तौ रामकेशवौ
The brahmin, together with his disciples, entered the great Kāla forest; and at that time, Rāma and Keśava also entered with their disciples.
वन्दमानौ महाकालं स तं केशवमव्रवीत्
As they bowed to Mahākāla, he spoke to Keśava.
सुखमासीच्च साधूनामज्ञानानां च सर्वदा
He always brought happiness to the virtuous and to those who were ignorant.
युवाभ्यां ते हताः सर्वे कंसप्रमुखतो नृपाः । मुनिसिद्धसुरादीनां स्थितिः कार्या त्वयाऽनघ
All the kings, led by Kaṃsa, have been slain by you two; now, O sinless one, you must ensure the welfare of the sages, siddhas, gods, and others.
करिष्यामि तमित्युक्त्वा स नमस्य ततो ययौ
Saying, 'I will do that,' he departed after offering his respects.
कस्य न श्रद्दधे तेषां वचस्त्वत्यद्भुतं यतः
Who among them could believe such an utterly wondrous statement?
ततस्तत्रोत्थितः शब्दः संश्लेषे च तथा तयोः
Then a sound arose there, as the two embraced.
न वै ज्ञातौ मया वीरौ यदुवृष्णिकुलोद्भवौ
I did not know that those two heroes were born in the Yadu and Vṛṣṇi lineages.
गुर्वर्थं किं ददामीति सह रामेण हर्षितः
Pleased, he said together with Rāma, 'What shall I give for the sake of my teacher?'
पुत्रमिच्छाम्यहं त्वत्तो यो मृतो लवणांभसि 5.1.27.
I desire from you the son who died in the salt ocean.
प्रभासे तीर्थयात्रायां त्वमेव तमिहानय
During the pilgrimage at Prabhāsa, you must bring him here.
तं समुद्र उवाचेदं दैत्यः पंचजनो महान्
Then the great demon Pañcajana, in the form of a sea creature, spoke these words to him.
ततः पंचजनं हत्वा ग्राहरूपं महाबलम्
Then, having slain Pañcajana, the mighty one in the form of a sea creature—
जलेश्वरगृहात्तेन ग्राहेणातीव लीलया
With great ease, he took him from the house of the lord of the waters, in the form of a sea creature.
यमालयगतं मत्वा तदा वरुणमब्रवीत्
Thinking he had gone to the abode of Yama, he then spoke to Varuṇa.
पुराजिरे हता दैत्या दानवा बलदर्पिताः
Long ago, the demons and Dānavas, proud of their strength, were slain.
न्यासभूतो रथो यस्ते विधृतो निहतारिणा
The chariot that was entrusted to you, upheld by the slayer of enemies—
येनाहवे प्रेतराजं जित्वा पश्यामि बालकम् ददौ तं रथमक्षोभ्यं रणे तस्मै सुरासुरैः
With which, having conquered the lord of the dead in battle, I saw the boy— the gods and asuras gave him that unshakable chariot in war.
ततो हरिः समालोक्य रथं रत्नपरिष्कृतम्
Then Hari beheld the chariot adorned with jewels.
नाना चित्रविचित्रांगं गरुडध्वजराजितम् 5.1.27.
It was splendid with various wondrous forms and bore the banner of Garuda.
अजेयं देवदेवेंद्रदानवासुरराक्षसैः
It was unconquerable by the lords of gods, demons, asuras, or rākṣasas.
सहस्रसूर्यप्रतिमं चारुवक्त्रचतुर्युगम्
Its four beautiful wheels shone like a thousand suns.
संवर्ताकारविषमं खगेंद्रवरकेतनम्
It had a tumultuous, formidable appearance and was marked by the banner of the king of birds.
प्रदक्षिणमुपाकृत्य देवताभ्यः प्रणम्य च
Circling it to the right and bowing to the deities,
ततो जगाम त्वरितो जनार्दनो जगन्निवासो यमलोकमाश्रिताम्
Then Janārdana, the abode of the worlds, swiftly went to the realm of Yama.
तत्र प्रध्यापयामास शंखं शार्ङ्गधनुर्धरः
There, the wielder of the Śārṅga bow sounded his conch.
नरकांतर्गता मर्त्याः पापाचारपरायणाः
The mortals within Naraka, devoted to sinful conduct,
शस्त्राणि कुंठतां प्रापुर्यंत्राणि विविधानि च
Their weapons became blunted, and all sorts of restraints lost their power.
असिपत्रवनंनाम शीर्णपर्णमजायत
The forest of sword-leaves, called Asipatravana, lost its leaves.
अभैरवं भैरवाख्यं कुंभीपाकमवाचिकम् 5.1.27.
