एवं शापं वरं लब्ध्वा देवदेवान्महेश्वरात्
Thus, having received curse and boon from the great lord of gods,
विरंचिमथ ते जाप्यैस्तोषयन्तोऽग्रतः स्थिताः
Then, standing before him, they pleased Virāñci with prayers.
ब्रह्मणस्तेन वाक्येन तुष्टाः सर्वे द्विजोत्तमाः
By that statement of Brahmā, all the foremost twice-born were satisfied.
एके तत्राब्रुवन्विप्रा वेदान्वै वृणवामहै
There, some of the sages said, 'Let us choose the Vedas.'
अन्ये प्राहुः किमस्माकं धनैस्तुष्टे पितामहे
Others said, 'What use have we for wealth when the Grandfather is pleased?'
शांता आढ्याश्च लोकाश्च वरदानाद्भवंतु नः
May peaceful and prosperous worlds arise for us through the granting of boons.
परस्परं वरार्थेऽथ युद्धं कर्तुं समुद्यताः
Then, for the sake of the boon, they became ready to fight one another.
केचिद्विप्रा उदासीनाः केचिद्वै मौनमास्थिताः 5.1.26.
Some of the sages remained indifferent, and some maintained silence.
तीर्थानां प्रवरं तीर्थं क्षेत्राणामपि चोत्तमम् 5.1.26.
Among holy places, it is the foremost; among sacred fields, it is also the highest.
एवं प्रजल्प्याथ मुनिप्रधानस्तत्रैव वासं सहसा चकार 5.1.26.
Thus, after this conversation, the chief of the sages immediately took up residence there.
ययोर्दर्शनमात्रेण यमलोकं न पश्यति
By merely seeing them, one does not behold the realm of Yama.
न पश्येद्यमलोकं स यद्यपि ब्रह्महा भवेत्
Even if one were a slayer of a Brahmin, he would not see the world of Yama.
अवतीर्णौ यदोर्वंशे दिव्यरूपौ महाद्युतौ
They descended in the Yadu lineage, possessing divine forms and great splendor.
कंसं हत्वा सचाणूरमुग्रसेनं नराधिपम्
Having slain Kaṃsa and Cāṇūra, they installed Ugrasena as king.
किं कार्यं ते मया ब्रूहि कर्तव्यं ते सुते हते
Tell me, what should I do for you, now that your son has been killed?
सर्वं संपत्स्यते कृष्ण भवतो हि न दुर्लभम्
Everything will be accomplished, O Krishna, for nothing is difficult for you.
गच्छेतमुज्जयिन्यां वै कृतविद्यौ भविष्यथ
Go to Ujjayinī; there you will become accomplished in knowledge.
कण्ठस्थांश्चक्रतुर्वेदानाचारमखिलं च तौ
They mastered the Vedas and all conduct, holding them at the tip of their tongues.
अहोरात्रैश्चतुःषष्ट्या तदद्भुतमभूद्द्विज
In sixty-four days and nights, O sage, that wondrous feat was accomplished.
विचिंत्य तौ तदा मेने प्राप्तौ चंद्र दिवाकरौ 5.1.27.
Reflecting then, he considered them as the moon and the sun come together.
शिष्यैस्तु सहितो विप्रो महाकालवनेऽविशत् ।। शिष्यैः सह प्रविष्टौ द्वौ तदा तौ रामकेशवौ
The brahmin, together with his disciples, entered the great Kāla forest; and at that time, Rāma and Keśava also entered with their disciples.
वन्दमानौ महाकालं स तं केशवमव्रवीत्
As they bowed to Mahākāla, he spoke to Keśava.
सुखमासीच्च साधूनामज्ञानानां च सर्वदा
He always brought happiness to the virtuous and to those who were ignorant.
युवाभ्यां ते हताः सर्वे कंसप्रमुखतो नृपाः । मुनिसिद्धसुरादीनां स्थितिः कार्या त्वयाऽनघ
All the kings, led by Kaṃsa, have been slain by you two; now, O sinless one, you must ensure the welfare of the sages, siddhas, gods, and others.
करिष्यामि तमित्युक्त्वा स नमस्य ततो ययौ
Saying, 'I will do that,' he departed after offering his respects.
कस्य न श्रद्दधे तेषां वचस्त्वत्यद्भुतं यतः
Who among them could believe such an utterly wondrous statement?
ततस्तत्रोत्थितः शब्दः संश्लेषे च तथा तयोः
Then a sound arose there, as the two embraced.
न वै ज्ञातौ मया वीरौ यदुवृष्णिकुलोद्भवौ
I did not know that those two heroes were born in the Yadu and Vṛṣṇi lineages.
गुर्वर्थं किं ददामीति सह रामेण हर्षितः
Pleased, he said together with Rāma, 'What shall I give for the sake of my teacher?'
पुत्रमिच्छाम्यहं त्वत्तो यो मृतो लवणांभसि 5.1.27.
I desire from you the son who died in the salt ocean.
