यः स्नाति पुरतो देव्याः स सिद्धि लभते पराम्
Who bathes before the goddess obtains the highest accomplishment.
स्नाति वै फलकुम्भेन अग्रे देव्या विधानतः
He who bathes with a fruit-filled pot in front of the goddess, according to the rite—
तस्य संजायते पुत्रो यथा देवः षडाननः
A son is born to him, just as the six-faced god.
रूपसौभाग्यसंपन्नस्तत्र स्नातो भवेन्नरः
A man who bathes there becomes endowed with beauty, good fortune, and prosperity.
भर्ता पुरूरवा लब्धं ऐलेयोंऽसौ महीपतिः
King Purūravas obtained it; he, the descendant of Ila, was that ruler.
कारणेन यथा तेन यस्मिन्काले प्रतिष्ठितम्
Just as, for that reason, at the time when it was established by him—
कथं पुरूरवाश्चासौ भार्यास्तस्य वराप्सराः सर्वमेतद्यथावृत्तं वद कौतूहलं हि मे
How did Pururavas obtain that celestial nymph as his wife? Tell me everything as it truly happened, for I am eager to know.
बदरिकाश्रमस्थौ तौ तेनेन्द्रो भयमागतः 5.1.8.
While those two were residing at Badarikāśrama, Indra became fearful.
आदिष्टा या मघवता विघ्नार्थं च समागताः
Those who were instructed by Maghavat and assembled for the purpose of creating obstacles—
विघ्नार्थमिह आयातास्तदा देवौ जजल्पतुः
Having come here to cause hindrance, at that time the two gods conversed.
एवं संजल्प्य च नरो नारायणमुवाच ह
After thus conversing, Nara spoke to Nārāyaṇa.
मंजर्या सहकारस्य स्त्रीमूरुभ्यां चकार ह
With the blossom of the mango tree, he fashioned a woman with thighs like a lady’s.
उत्थितां प्रमदां दृष्ट्वा ज्वलनाभां वरांगनाम्
Seeing the woman who arose, radiant like fire and of exquisite beauty,
शक्रस्तासां वचः श्रुत्वा गत्वा देवावुवाच ह
Śakra, having heard their words, went and spoke to the gods.
अहमर्थी स्त्रियाश्चास्याः प्रसादः क्रियतामिति
I desire this woman; let her favor be granted.
अस्मद्वचनसामर्थ्याद्गृहाणेमां त्वमुर्वशीम्
By the power of our words, accept this Urvaśī.
मंजर्या सहकारस्य तेनेयमुर्वशी स्मृता
Because of the mango blossom, she became known as Urvaśī.
गत्वा स्वर्गमथाहूय चित्रांगदमुवाच ह 5.1.8.
Then, going to heaven, he summoned Citrāngada and spoke to him.
क्रियतामचिरादेषा यत्नमास्थाय शोभनम् वरं प्रवीणा सा जाता नृत्ये गीते च कोविदा
Let this be done quickly, making every effort; she became skilled, excellent in dance and song.
एवं सा न्यवसत्तत्र सुरसद्मनि सुन्दरी
Thus that beautiful woman dwelt there in the mansion of the gods.
इलस्यपुत्रो धर्मात्मा नाम्ना चैव पुरूरवाः
The righteous son of Ila, named Pururavas,
नृत्यन्तीं वासवस्याग्रे उर्वशीं वीक्ष्य कामुकः
The passionate Pururavas, seeing Urvaśī dancing before Vāsava,
धैर्यं चित्ते समावेश्य मुहूर्तं पर्यवस्थितः
Composing his mind with courage, he remained steady for a moment.
तत्प्रदेशाद्विनिष्क्रम्य कामार्ता चातिविह्वला
Leaving that place, overwhelmed with desire and greatly agitated,
अथात्मानं च संवेद्य उत्थिता भूमिमण्डलात्
Then, having regained awareness of himself, he rose from the earth's surface.
गतः पुरूरवा भूमिं तामेव मनसा स्मरन्
Pururavas went to that land, recalling it in his mind.
चित्रांगदगृहे गत्वा दूतं साथ चकार ह
He entered Citrangada's house and sent a messenger along with him.
उर्वश्या रहितः स्वर्गः शून्योऽप्यासीद्दिवौकसाम् 5.1.8.
Heaven, bereft of Urvashi, became empty even for the gods.
तया विरहितः सोऽपि शून्यचित्तः परिभ्रमन्
Deprived of her, he too wandered with an empty heart.
परिभ्रमन्स तीर्थानि महाकालवनं गतः
Wandering, he visited the holy places and reached the great forest of Time.
