ततो ऽवलंब्य ते धैर्यं दृष्ट्वा देवं यथाविधि
Thereupon, having gathered their courage, they beheld the god as prescribed,
शिरोगतैरंजलिभिः पादेभ्यश्च महीं गतैः
With hands joined upon their heads and with their foreheads touching the ground,
वृषासनाय सौम्याय शूलशक्तिधराय ते
To you, seated on the bull, gentle, bearing trident and spear,
नमो दिक्चर्मवस्त्राय शुचये तीव्रतेजसे
Homage to you, clothed in the hide of the directions, pure one, of intense radiance.
नमोंधकविनाशाय परेशाय नमोनमः
Salutations again and again to the destroyer of Andhaka, to the Supreme Lord.
गिरिशाय सुरेशाय ईशानाय नमोनमः 5.1.6.
Salutations again and again to the Lord of the Mountain, the Lord of the gods, the Supreme Ruler.
सुरासुराधिपतये यतीनां पतये नमः
Salutations to the Lord of the gods and asuras, to the Lord of ascetics.
विरूपाक्षशुभाख्याय विश्वरूपाय वै नमः
Salutations to the one known as Virūpākṣa and Śubha, to the one who is truly of universal form.
वेधसे विश्वरूपाय दैत्यसंहारिणे नमः
Salutations to the Creator, to the one of universal form, to the destroyer of the daityas.
विरूपाय सुरूपाय रूपाणां शतधारिणे
To the formless, to the beautiful, to the one who bears a hundred forms.
वरदाय वराहाय सुकूर्माय नमोनमः
Salutations again and again to the giver of boons, to the Boar, to the auspicious Tortoise.
त्रिनेत्र त्राणमस्माकं त्रिपुरघ्न विधीयताम्
O Three-eyed One, slayer of Tripura, may our protection be granted.
शरीराणि विलोक्येशः कृशान्यथ दिवौकसाम्
The Lord beheld the bodies, emaciated, of the gods.
दिव्यप्रतापधारेण त्रिवेधेनांतरात्मना
With divine, blazing energy, with the threefold Veda, with the inner self,
आराधनं समीक्ष्याह ब्रह्मादीनां सुरेश्वरः
The Lord of the gods, seeing the worship of Brahmā and the others, spoke.
दिव्येनानेन विधिना भृशमाराधितो ह्यहम् 5.1.6.
By this divine rite, I have indeed been greatly worshipped.
व्रतस्था मां हि पश्यंति मानुषा देवता अपि
Those who are steadfast in vows, whether humans or even gods, see me.
एकैकशो द्वित्रिशो वा समस्तेभ्यः समेन वः
Whether one by one, two or three at a time, or all together, equally for you all.
हिताय भवतां चाहमागामुज्जयिनीं प्रति
For your welfare, I am going towards Ujjayinī.
किमर्थं कंपिता भूमिस्त्रैलोक्यं व्याकुलीकृतम्
For what reason is the earth trembling, and the three worlds thrown into confusion?
देवतानां तु रक्षार्थं श्रूयतामत्र कारणम्
For the protection of the gods, let the cause here be heard.
असुरो द्रोहणोनाम बलवान्योगमायिकः
There is an asura named Drohaṇa, powerful and endowed with magical power.
तस्य दैत्यस्य बलिनो दैत्याः परपुरंजयाः
The Daityas, powerful and conquerors of enemy cities, were his followers.
सेंद्रान्निहंतुमिच्छंतो माया प्रच्छन्नचारकाः समुद्ययुः सुरान्हंतुमुद्यता उद्यतायुधाः
Desiring to slay Indra and the gods, they rose up, masters of illusion and secret movement, armed and ready for battle.
तेषां कपालपातेन भूमिनिष्कंपनेन च 5.1.6.
By the falling of their skulls and the trembling of the earth,
लोकस्थितिविनाशाथ तेषामासीत्समुद्यमः
there arose among them an endeavor for the destruction of the world’s order and stability.
देवानुग्रहकर्ता त्वं गुणस्मृतिनिषेवितः
You are the bestower of grace upon the gods, honored through the remembrance of virtues.
दिव्यदृष्टिभिरत्यर्थं यशोऽर्थं भीम नंदिताः
With divine vision, you are exceedingly praised for your fame and might, O fearsome one.
ध्यानसाधननिष्पन्नं यदन्येषां न विद्यते
What is attained through the practice of meditation is not found among others.
मनोवाक्कायभावेन दुष्करं दुश्चरं तपः
Austerity, difficult to perform and hard to practice, is accomplished by mind, speech, and body.
